Experimental jazz group Crater is heading out on a short tour of California with some very special guests! Catch them tonight at The Temple Bar in LA, or Friday night at the Tongue & Groove in SF, or at one of their other gigs on this special Cali tour...

Fronted by legendary Bay Area drummer Scott Amendola (T.J. Kirk, Charlie Hunter Quartet), Crater is a three-piece ensemble exploring the electronic side of improvised music. Featuring constant collaborator Todd Sickafoose on bass and musical-software engineer JHNO on laptop, the group will be joined by special guests Nels Cline (Banyan) and Jeff Parker (Tortoise, Isotope217) on guitars.

Crater uses effects, loop, and processing to create their ambient soundscapes, and the sonic result is dense and richly textured. Drawing from dub, post-rock, and ‘70s era Miles Davis fusion, the group creates a sprawling groove that builds in shape and energy ‘til the intensity reaches a critical threshold level. The resulting impact can cause a chill of excitement to ripple down the spine, as if one was witnessing an avalanche slide. Yet each musician approaches his playing with a true jazz sensibility, not letting go of control or playing notes for note’s sake. There is real artistry and sense of structure behind their wall of sound.

Those of us in the Bay Area are lucky to have these musicians in our backyard. These versatile players are frequent collaborators who throw down a solid show, and seeing Crater (or any one of Scott Amendola’s or Nels Cline’s musical manifestations) in an intimate club is a guaranteed mind-bending experience. Jeff Parker is a fine guitarist and a familiar name to many Chicago music fans, as well as those in tune to his experimental improv outfits Tortoise and Isotope217. Watching him ease into the Crater soundscape, and square off with Nels Cline on guitar, will be a sight to be seen - and heard. Visual effects artist Carole Kim, whose work in live video has been praised as groundbreaking and intensely stimulating, will join the band for this tour.

If you live in California or happen to be passing through this weekend, and you’re down with innovative live electronica and superb musicianship, then check these guys out.
