LOS ANGELES – September 1, 2002 – slackstring is hitting the road and visiting the Northwest. Guitarist and lead vocalist Eric Lyman has been approved to take one week off from his day job and the band will play eight shows over a nine day period beginning with a send-off party at the Malibu Inn on September 20th. From then the tour winds up the California coast making stops in Aptos and Big Sur before hitting Interstate 5 for a show in Chico. The band then heads to Portland for two shows before finishing up with gigs in Seattle and Tacoma.
“It’s been our goal to travel with this band and the Northwest is really beautiful this time of year so we are all super excited to hit the road,” Lyman said. “We are bringing our surfboards and wet-suits and hope to hit some breaks on the Oregon coast.”
Bassist Andy Weiss commends Lyman for using his hard-earned vacation time to do a mini-tour. “Eric gets two weeks off each year, but in the corporate world you can only take one week off at a time unless you are a vice-president or something. For Eric to dedicate this entire week to the band means a lot to the rest of the guys.”
The band will travel in guitarist and songwriter Gavin Heaney’s blue Ford Econoline and tour manager Forrest Reda’s 2000 Jetta. “I got this car for road trips – I went on Phish tour in 2000 and caught the entire West Coast run in this baby. It’s been a great car for me,” Reda said. “As a matter of fact, I used my entire week of vacation for that trip.”
Heaney has driven the coast several times in his van and feels a connection with the Northwest. “I drove up to The Gorge in 1998 to see Phish and went to Horning’s Hideout in 2001 with Forrest to see the String Cheese Incident. The Northwest has always been good to me and I look forward to seeing all our fans and friends in Portland and Seattle.”
Drummer Matt Muir sums up the band’s exuberance, “Dude, we are on tour! How cool is that? I can’t wait to spread slackstring’s chill vibes to the rest of the West Coast. No matter what happens, I can always look back when I am a grandfather and say that I toured with my band.”
