North Beach Jazz Fest??? Maybe it should be renamed: North Beach Funk Fest!
With the North Beach Jazz Fest in town, you know San Francisco will be loaded with players, looking to show off their talent in front of their fellow musicians. However, the night before the festivities kick off in Washington Square Park, the place to be will be the Great American Music Hall where Papa Grows Funk lands on Friday, August 9th.
Although a fairly new ensemble, when John Gros (George Porter & The Runnin' Pardners), Jason Mingledorf (Galactic), Peter V. (Cyril Neville), Marc Pero, Russel Batiste (Vida Blue, FunkyMeters) and June Yamagishi (Wild Magnolias) get together, you know the best of New Orleans Funk will be coming straight at you! When Offbeat magazine named Papa Grows Funk the best band in New Orleans in 2001 (beating out perinneals Galactic and Funky Meters), the press media simply confirmed what the fans who had seen these guys perform already knew... THEY’RE ON FIRE!
The secret is out, however, as they've sold-out their only six shows ever played in San Francisco (in the last year and a half). We can only hope that this band doesn't leap up to the next level too quickly...
So, here they come on Friday Night, August 9th to the Great American Music Hall for this one night only, exclusive SF show. Be sure you get your tickets for this one and get there early because Bay Area smokin’ groove machine, Will Bernard and Motherbug (SF's own funk treat) will begin this evening of revelry with their opening set beginning at 9:00pm. Will has also been invited to sit in with PGF! This show is truly something special to kick your weekend into high gear!
