Sat Eye Candy: Journey

STILL THEY RIDE

With one song Journey went from being a big band to a worldwide sensation that continues to this day. Jonathan Cain, the co-writer of “Don’t Stop Belivin’,” turns 61 today. Already a well-established musician and member of the charting band The Babys with future solo star John Waite, Cain left to join Journey in 1981. His often-romantic keyboard work and his Manilow-esque classic pop songwriting chops shifted the band’s direction a good deal, unearthing a new audience for their mega-ballads and establishing Journey as one of the biggest acts of the 1980s. Cain remains one of Journey’s core members to this day, anchoring the songwriting with Neal Schon and helping the band to regain their arena packing capacity after a few shaky years. A rocker with a big ol’ heart, we salute Mr. Cain and his band, and wish him a happy birthday. (Dennis Cook)

Let’s jump in with the big guns, one version with original singer Steve Perry and one with new singer Arnel Pineda. Sing along and your Saturday will be a touch brighter.

Though known as a poppier band to folks who’ve only heard their singles, Journey has always loved to crank it up, including this Escape number, captured here at a Day On The Green concert in Oakland, CA in 1982.

If anything, the harder tunes are even heavier these days.

Even though Cain didn’t have a hand in writing this one with The Babys, it points the way to some of what he brought into Journey.

Case in point, this swoony hit single penned by Cain, one of the most recognizable road songs of all time. Truly, love and a music man ain’t always what it’s supposed to be.

And there’s this classic, mushy but incredibly effective in a wholly romantic way.

Prior to Cain, Gregg Rolie was the keyboardist and co-lead singer in the 70s lineup. Here’s a taste of that band.

Few songs unite an audience like this one.

Journey’s new album, Eclipse, arrives May 24. The band debuted some new songs live this past week in Vegas and Reno. Here’s a standout from the new bunch.

Prior to Arnel joining the band in 2008, Steve Augeri filled the lead singer position and did a pretty dang good job of it, too.

We close with some simple but sage advice from the band.
