Summer is here and So-Cal has reason to celebrate with the first festival of the season at the Long Beach Chili Cook-off!! Also, big name acts like the Allman Brothers Band, WAR, and Los Lobos are swinging through town this weekend.

Friday | 06.07.02

Tonight is the second night of a 3 night run for the Allman Brothers Band at the beautiful Wiltern Theater in Hollywood. Rock Veterans WAR play at the San Fernando Valley Fair in Van Nuys while LA rock veterans Los Lobos play at the House of Blues in Hollywood with Latin-funk band QUETZAL. Other shows in the LA area include: Sonny Boy at Kozmos in Huntington Beach, BoujouBumBastick at The Echo, Feed the Kitty at Blue Beet in Newport Beach and Chosen Few Children at Domenico's Bar & Grill in Pasadena. Down in San Diego, The Groove Syndicate play at Winston's.

Saturday | 06.08.02

Today is the first day of the Long Beach Chili Cook-off featuring rock and blues bands such as Bob Mould, Soul Asylum, The Mother Hips, Booker T and the MG’s, Eric Sardinas and many others. Check the festival website for the cheap advance tickets. Tonight Funkyard Presents brings us Particle, who are back in their old stomping grounds, headlining a big show at 1650 (formerly Vynyl) with special guest DJ Gearwhore. Tickets are still available on JamBase Tickets. Particle is gearing up for another nation-wide tour, where they will land at Bonnaroo, High Sierra Music Festival, Baja Bash, and they were recently added to Camp Bisco!! San Diego is having their own San Diego Blues Fest today as well, featuring the North Mississippi Allstars. At night QUETZAL will be at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach.

Sunday 06.09.02 Today is the reggae and jazzy-jam-funk day at the Long Beach Chili Cook-off featuring an amazing lineup. On the Acid Jazz Stage you can catch bands like Particle (3:30pm), Robert Walter's 20th Congress (5:00pm), and Karl Denson's Tiny Universe (7:00pm). On the Reggae Stage you can dance to bands like Common Sense (2:50pm), The Itals (4:15), and the incredible Michael Franti and Spearhead (7:15pm). At night down in San Diego, bluegrass newcomers, The McCloskey Brothers Band play at Winston's.

EarthSave Benefit Concert at 14-Below in Santa Monica, June 12th

So-Cal jam correspondent Mike Howard has organized a concert on June 12th to benefit the EarthSave Organization. From the organizations website it reads: “EarthSave leads a global movement of people from all walks of life who are taking concrete steps to promote healthy and life-sustaining food choices. EarthSave supplies information, support and practical programs to those who have learned that their food choices impact environmental and human health. We support individuals in making food choices that promote health, reduce health care costs, and provide greater independence from the medical system. We raise awareness of the ecological destruction linked to the production of "food animals." We advocate and promote a delicious, planet-friendly diet.” For more information, please visit the organizations web-site. Performing this night at 14 Below will be rising bluegrass locals Monkeygrass (who start at 7:30pm…get there early!!), local jam band Thalamus Flynt, and festive funkateers mamaSutra who will headline the show. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.
