Yesterday, Kathy Averill announced via Facebook that her son, Michael Larsen, aka Eyedea of the hip-hop
duo
Eyedea and Abilities, passed away
in
his sleep on Saturday at the age of 28. The cause of death is not yet known.
Eyedea burst onto the scene in 1999 with a series of legendary freestyle battle victories, culminating in winning the
1999 Scribble Jam event, as well as the Rock Steady and Battle Blaze Chicago events. After cutting his teeth in the
battle rap scene, he formed Eyedea & Abilities with frequent collaborator DJ Abilities. The duo released three highly
regarded hip-hop albums between 2001 and 2009 on Rhymesayers entertainment. Their most recent album was
2009's By the Throat.
