On Thursday, March 21st two of today’s finest, cutting edge bluegrass players, Gordon Stone and Tony Trischka, will bring their music to New York to share a co-bill at Tribeca Blues. The Gordon Stone Band and The Tony Trischka Band have both taken banjo playing and the idea of bluegrass music new levels, combining aspects of bluegrass with jazz, classical, rock, funk, world beat and more. Both have pushed the boundaries of bluegrass, and in one special night will play under the same roof.
Tony Trischka is one of the world’s most innovative banjo players, and has shared the stage with such artists as REM, the Violent Femmes, David Grisman, Leftover Salmon and more. Bela Fleck, one of today's premier banjo players, said “Tony was ahead of his time. My springboard was Tony Trischka, and without Tony, none of my music would have happened.” Tony brings with him four other musicians to help round out his band, all of whom are highly accomplished in their art. Michael Amendola (sax, flute) is active in the NYC jazz scene and has written composition for National Public Radio along with composing a theatrical show for the Big Apple Circus. Rolf Strum (guitars, vocals) has performed and toured with Eddy Arnold, Giora Feidman, Billy Martin and Illuminati, Dave Douglas and Buddy Cage. Bob Bowen (bass) has worked with such musicians as Lee Konitz, Mark Murphy and Tony Purrone, and also has projects of his own such as MOB Trio with drummer Matt Wilson. Scott Neuman (drums and percussion) is the featured drummer with the original Broadway musical Swing, which opened in 1999. Throughout 1998 and 1999, Scott was a member of the Vermont-based Jazz Mandolin Project. All in all, The Tony Trischka Band is an all-star group that is sure to play their hearts out.
Gordon Stone has been a staple in the music scene for over ten years, and has been taking his work to new levels every time he enters the studio. Sitting in at shows and recording with everyone from Phish to Strangefolk to Jazz Mandolin Project to Alison Krauss, Gordon has defined himself as one of the best bluegrass and pedal steel guitar players in the scene. As journalist Tim Lynch puts it, “This is music with enough energy to appeal to rock and jam-bands fans, as well as acoustic music lovers, newgrass fans and jazz lovers.” The Gordon Stone Band has just released a new album, Red Room, that features their new drummer, Russ Lawton, who is also in the Trey Anastasio Band which is about to embark on a national tour at the end of May. Along with Russ is bass player Rudy Dauth closing out the trio. These guys are ready to rock the night away in NYC.
This night of music is a symbol of the new directions bluegrass is moving in the 21st century. Two of today’s greatest banjo players, who are both pushing bluegrass to new levels, are sharing a bill on the same night - don't miss out!
