On Sunday, March 10 Philadephia's Townhall will record a live studio album - their second release in less than one year. Only 75 lucky fans will get to attend the recording: not only will you get the opportunity to be a part of the band's history, but you'll actually be making the recording possible. In a departure from their previous format, this project will be recorded live in the studio by Gordan Rice, the same engineer who recorded Live at The Point, Townhall's double-disc debut album, just eight months ago.
The need for an immediate second release comes from the rapid creation of new material. Between band members there are about 15 news songs, and many people (including the band members themselves) are anxious for a great recording of the new tunes… and a more updated representation of where the band is going.
Now into their second year as a band, Townhall has played over 250 shows that have strengthened their dedication to making great music and delivering a powerful live performance. As Jim Sutcliffe of Electric Factory Concerts/Clear Channel Entertainment writes, "Just when you think everything is tired and no one can do anything new, a band comes along and re-ignites the whole thing!" After their sixth week with a national AAA and college radio promotion, Townhall was added to 83 stations from Rutland, VT to Juneau, AK (for a station in your area, see the list below). Their first performance and interview on WXPN's nationally syndicated Live at The World Cafi aired January 23, 2002 and was well received. After hearing the show a new fan, Justin Farrell, wrote, "I heard one song and knew that I needed this album."
The band's first single off the album, "Kudzu Killer", spent 12 weeks in regular rotation on Philadelphia's WXPN. Program Director Bruce Warren remarked, "Townhall is a unique band with a unique musical vision. At a time when most new rock bands adhere to lifeless trends, Townhall breathes new life in to the singer-songwriter genre with interesting and eclectic twists and turns." Last October, the single made the stations Top Ten Most Requested list and was subsequently the second most played song on the station.
For those that haven't seen the band in a while, it's time to see them again! Check out their upcoming gigs below. For more information, or to schedule an interview, please contact Carolyn Ballen via e-mail or at 215.627.1308.
