The Mardi Gras season is here and Papa Grows Funk and John Mooney are landing in New York City to lay on some heavy funk twisted with swampy delta blues.
As many already know, Papa Grows Funk is an all-star group featuring members of The Funky Meters, Page McConnell’s Vida Blue, The Wild Magnolias, George Porter’s Runnin’ Pardners, a former member of Galactic, and Smilin’ Myron.
Coming off a very successful Colorado tour selling out such rooms as the Fabulous Fox Theatre in Boulder and 8150 Club in Vail, Papa Grows Funk landed back in New Orleans only to receive “Best Emerging Funk Band” award from the highly respected Offbeat Magazine’s Best of The Beat Awards. If that wasn’t enough of a compliment to the band, June Yamagishi received the “Best Guitarist of New Orleans” award. Mind you these awards come only a short year after PGF’s incarnation.
When PGF rolls into any town, one never knows who will sit in with them. All of the original Meters have given their stamp of approval by sitting in at various shows throughout the country. Phish’s Page McConnell sat in along with Allman Brother's bassist O’teil while in New Orleans recording. The last NYC appearance had guest appearances by Melvin Sparks, Houseman of Galactic, and Leo Nocentelli. The span of guest musicians exemplifies the respect this band has gained in such a short time. But then again, these boys are no rookies to the scene!
To begin the night off, John Mooney and his ferocious slide guitar will bring us some tasty delta blues. Mooney and his guitar fill a room with sound like no other solo performer. A staple of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, John Mooney is just the perfect way to warm up the room to the levels needed to celebrate the Mardi Gras season.
In support of the cause, B.B. King Blues Club will be offering discounted pints of beer all night long!
