Soultronics and ambiance with a neck-breaking beat, tossing that wig back and elevating the mentals with deep throat instrumentals. Straight up.
Much missed in recent times as the full components of the nasty drop, old-school Beantowners and new-school New Yorkahs, Actual Proof are set to flip it for all those who have been craving for their styles. Some of the first to really set it off as proponents of turtablism, the Proof synthesis invokes flavors of the English drum n bass movement and intelligent hip-hop laboratory science cooking with some sonic oratory essence. Since August, the band has been on hiatus has been due to a hot seat on the piano bench but none have let that come to hinder their work.
Samadhi, a congregation featuring the Proof’s head-bop brothers, guitarist Dave Holmes and bassist Stu Brooks and drummer Joe Tomino along with soul-brethren Rich Stein on percussion and Peter Stoltzman on keyboards continues the mantra spoken through Actual Proof in a heavily improvisational setting... more on this to come in upcoming weeks. The charismatic vibe monk, vocalist Mark Holmes has been jumping puddles of Atlantic to work with the UK’s Good Looking Records (see LTJ Bukem partner MC Conrad) and is featured on the label’s upcoming EP. During the hiatus, the Proof continued to write further exploratory material, integrated down-tempo, dub and electronic movements, ready to set it off proper.
The head-funk conglomerate is now back in true form and coming at ya with an evening at the infamous NYC spot Pseudo Lounge (600 Broadway, 6th floor-corner of Houston & Broadway) on Friday, February 22. As always, the Proof masterminds the whole experience, creating an atmosphere enticing both the mind and body with solar elements in Headhuntstrumental fashion as they bring along with them the Boston trip-hop contingent Moonraker and the tri-turntablistic fusion of soulful drum n bass and the raw hip-hop scratch attack of Seishi & Reason. Giving it up for the local cats, the Proof has also grabbed up Unda Brooklyn residents Mercy_killAH & Haazmat, Clark ov Satum, and Space Trucking Mogul. And if that ain’t enough for you, $20 gets you all you can drink but, of course, you have to wait in the keg line.
Don’t sleep on this party. Actual Proof is just plain nice, taking the break to new levels skilled in precision and defining the next movement. As it is their trademark they have provided an arena of sonic bliss; an assemblage of expanding dynamics through which the future may be shown who care to see it for themselves.
