NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS | 02.09.02 | IL

As I ventured out to Dekalb, IL, I wondered what kind of crowd Otto’s would draw since my only North Mississippi Allstar experiences have been contained to Chicago. The crowd filtered in and it didn’t take long to realize that this smallish college town knew what was up and that the Blues and Rock talent of North Mississippi Allstars was no longer a secret. I was thrilled that the word was out knowing that these southern gentlemen deserve every bit of recognition and kudos that they get.

Breaking out with the title track of their latest album 51 Phantom, I was psyched that the night had begun and knew that all present were in for a real treat. With front man Luther Dickinson’s proclamation, it was the last show before the band was to head back down south for a short tour break. The band was just as ready to get down and dirty as the fans. Luther is amazing, his integrity as a musician and his confidence on stage is well beyond his years. The energy climbed with “Po Black Maddie,” “Skinny Woman” and “Goin’ Down South.” Just when we were all warmed up, the talented Chris Chew started throwing his funk in all the right places.

Other highlights of the night were “Freedom Highway,” and “The Thrill is Gone,” proving that the addition of Duwayne Burnside is a perfect fit. I continued to get my boots muddy when they tore it up with “Snakes In My Bushes” also off their latest album. Cody Dickinson’s superior drumming was also evident throughout out the night— as he also proved his ground and looked like he was having a great time doing it, when he picked up a guitar and joined his bro with “KC Jones.” The crowd also seemed to be blown away when he pulled out the electric washboard. Lastly, the Allstars tied up the memorable evening with “Shake ‘em All Down” and then “All Night Long,” (which is how long I think we all could have stayed).

Every time I see these guys they are more incredible than the time before. Just when I thought it couldn’t have gotten sweeter, I had the chance to say hello and thank the the boys themselves for an unforgettable show. It was a breath of fresh air to see the genuine appreciation that they have for their fans and the passion that they have for making that boogie music from the dirty south. The most exciting part is that their ride is just beginning, I guarantee we will be hearing about these Allstars for a long time.
