Truly a fascinating story that's breaking all laws of the industry traditions,
guitar phenomenon David Kolker has ignited a buzz among the music circles in New
York City before the press, record labels, and masses have even had a chance to
turn their heads and receive him on the radar. After just a few short months of
Kolker's new band electrifying crowds of fans and fellow musicians (local and
famous, who come to study his intriguing tones and style in clubs all over the
Village like the Baggot Inn every Tuesday night), the esteemed The Knitting Factory
in NYC has given the David Kolker Band the headlining slot on their Main Space
stage, Friday, January 25th, 10:30pm.
NYC's musician circles have known about David Kolker for a couple years now, but
music fans were first introduced to Kolker under a year ago while opening
for Robert Randolph's jam session with Derek Trucks, Stanley Jordan, and Susan Tedeschi, then wowing unsuspecting fans at shows with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Melvin Sparks, and Railroad Earth. Before long, musicians like Mike
Gordon were seen in his audience while others like Black Crowes bassist Andy
Hess and the renowned Melvin Sparks came to plug in with the band and jam.
Legendary drummer Bernard Purdie (most recently of the Masters of Groove, but
known for his recordings with the Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, Aretha
Franklin, and more) not only came to play, but lent his drumming on a few tracks of the much-anticipated first studio album from the David Kolker Band to be released next month, February 2002.
Kolker's soulful and explosive command of his stratocaster is backed by a
rolling thunder of drumming courtesy of Tony Mason, deep vibrating lines from
bassist Tim Luntzel, funk punches of brass from alto saxophonist Isamu Sato, and
milky waves of organ-drenched tones from the lapsteel and Leslie guitar of Paul
LeFebvre....resulting in a unique blend that at times, shoots from a blues
meditation to a jazz celebration to straight-up rock-n-roll all within seconds.
Come share in this growing buzz surrounding this band as they introduce
themselves to the masses next Friday, January 25th. The night opens with sets
by Kenny White and the colorful stylings of the keyboard-led band MOYE.
