And silently slouched through the forests by light.

Don't be the only one left on the block!

Come hide in the heard... and float with theeeeeee flock.

Ocelot, Ocelot where are you now? (Won't you come out to play)

Show was fantastic! The pix really don't capture the experience of Phish at Fenway though. Phish singing the star spangled banner on the mound. PHISH spelled out on the green monster scoreboard. The rainbow in right field during the 1st set. And you really don't get a sense of how many people were at the show. Sorry, not trying to be a dick. The pix of the dude holding 2 extras was spot on though. Keep boycotting ticket brokers!!

I was curious to hear Ocelot after listening to the DCU Center practice a few days ago. That is a cool song! Seeing now that they also played Light, does that mean the "Party Time!" leaked song list is true? Sure seems that way. I'll be at Jones Beach tomorrow, hoping for Roggae!

my first show as well and everything I could have wanted it to be. As a Sox fan, seeing America's most beloved ball park fishbowled with a glowstick war in the outfield was something I never thought I'd see and it was great. The rainbow over the ball park during the peak of Trey's "Chalkdust" solo was amazing!

if fenway proved anything its that phish still sucks since 1999 until proven otherwise.. if you liked that show your either 14 or never saw a show. granted it was the tour opener, but wow talk about weak sauce! sample opener?? when did this band stop being creative? and please PLEASE trey STOP PLAYING TREY SOLO SONGS WITH PHISH, THATS WHY YOUR SOLO BAND SUCKED! those new songs are horrific. heres hoping the rest of the tour is better, but the fenway show is a solid "5" if that. 20 minute second set "time turns elastic"???? puke in my mouth. p.s. its ok to like a band and be crital of it, doesnt mean your a hater.

And now for some honesty from someone who was there. Fenway Park is a place to play baseball not a place to hear music, this goes for all large outdoor venues (football stadiums), the crowed takes over the band and if your lucky you won't have some idiots singing the words next to you (like I did). At least arena can carry sound and drown out the retards screaming yeaaa!!! every 10 seconds. I see phish for 1 reason and 1 reason only.. to hear these guys jam, and I couldn't find that zone last night. But phish tour is like playing golf..Its always good to get the first hole out of the way. I wish I could go to Fox..

Okay...here's my two cents. Last night's show was quite good. I personally haven't heard Phish play as well as they did last night in a good ten years. I will be honest though...Phish begins and ends swith TREY. If Trey is on, the the show rips and if he isn't, well then it doesn't. The beginning of the first set was a bit tepid until the end of Limb-By-Limb when Trey officially "stepped in" to the sound. After that point, the show was pretty darned great. Though all the members of Phish sounded tight last night, i want to make mention of Mike's Unreal bass solo in YEM...it was just terrific. Phish are back in a big way.

bmcelvan starstarstarstar Mon 6/1/2009 12:35PM

Okay...so I believe myself to be a true fan of Phish. I will agree with mimiluv that what they played last wasn't their best concert ever. However I would have to disagree with the it sucked thing. One thing to understand is that Phish will never again be the 1994-1997 Phish that older fans saw and will forever love...no other band will probably be like that ever again. However, as time goes by things change both fans and Phish together. So...with that said...I hated the last tour and thought Coventry was some of the worst music I've ever heard Phish play. Virginia, however high the energy was, was I thought very mediocre. But last night, after having been in the studio for some time, sounded pretty darn good, considering. Perfect, of course not...and yeah Times Turns Elastic was about 10 min to long. But overall I'd say it was a very good first show of the tour...definitely leaves reason to think that they can get really good over the next 10 shows or so. I'd say out of 10, I'd have to give it a good 7.5 (which is not a bad score...its just not Lake Placid 95 or Rochester 97 which would be around 9.5)

mahgeetah...why do you fell the need to do that?.....i mean i don't particualrly get that much from disco biscuits...so what....i never get on an article about disco biscuits and start saying it was this or that.....if you have no real problem with phish, why would you come and start saying it was this or that?....you didn't explain that well enough for me to understand why people that don't really have a problem with phish come on and start negative feedback?...you stated what happens, but not why?...just because andy (jambase) started off as a phish site is not good enough reason to introduce negativity in phish threads when it is not needed or appreciated....

matthau: well said...I really could not agree more. I think Trey has in the past put too much pressure on himself and he needs to let himself relax and get in the groove. Not taking drugs to relieve the pressure that way (Summer 04) but by just letting the music come to him...not him attacking it.

Well Mahgeetah...just so you know. Jambase developed out of Andy Gadiel's Phish web site. So a bit of Phish coverage is expected. Also, nobody really cares whether you like the band or not. Phish heads all know that people either love or hate their band. That's how it's always been and always will be.

You tools talking smack...you remind me of something my chemistry teacher told me in high school: "not everyone is entitled to their own opinion." They've been gone for 5+ YEARS!!! You expect them to sound like they did when they were playing 200 shows a year on the first date of the tour? Phuckers like you are the reason I love the band but hate most of the over-analytical, never-good-enough, undeserving, ungrateful "fans" out there. Would you rather have the other option...the band not playing at all anymore? Stop living in the past, and if you think the band's best days are behind them, do us all a favor and STOP GOING TO THE SHOWS! That way I'll have a better chance of getting in.

as far as the people complaining about no "jamming" and "one song right after another", wouldn't you rather them take their time and learn the songs back into muscle memory and then start taking the songs out there again rather than just get up there and do some noodling so that everyone comes on here and pt and rt and where ever else and complain that their jams suck? we all want every show we go to to be just balls to the walls and raging w/far out improv but the reality is that's not how it works. give them some time and see what happens.

Phish sounded good for a band playing their fourth show in 5 years. I hear the potential to surpass where they were before, but nothing happens overnight. That doesn't make this jack ass serious. He that guy that walks out of a mind blowing show and then says they are off because they didn't play his stupid song. Don't be that guy. Wow... for a bunch of fans supposedly so secure in your opinions I'm sure getting under your skin. Truth be told, I like a lot of Phish's music...but that doesn't change the original point I'm making here and that none of you die-hards have even addressed, which is that your obsession with this band in particular, and your sensitivity and defensiveness when anyone, whether fan or not, criticizes something about this band (legit or not), is rather narrow and pompous. This goes beyond irrational shit-talking (which fanaticism seems to incite). I see it when other die-hard fans on these threads point out a weakness or flaw in a performance or Trey's behavior. Reminds me of the way my fundamentalist Christian relatives respond when any logical argument or critique of their beliefs is raised. Reasonable points falling on deaf ears.

Mostly just been a casual observation up to this point, but many of the comments I've seen here clearly reinforce it.

Destiny felt a little awkward last night Trey had his head down for the whole song...seemed like it didn't catch the right groove and so he just muscled through? Wow. I thought the smack-talk during the dead's tour was ugly, but that's NOTHING compared to this first Phish show.. I wish I could get an opinion I can trust, but these comments are like when you walk out of a show and hear one guy saying how crappy it was and another how it is the most EPIC show ever.. Strange how diverse the opinions are. I remember back in '97 how walking out of a Phish show during the heyday, some of the time people were stoked, some of the mediocre shows folks said 'That was fun..' but for the best shows, people had that look in their eyes, and everybody KNEW that it actually was something EPIC.. the sort of show you see a few times a year IF YOU ARE LUCKY!!!! Not even close to 10% of shows are EPIC or go down in history. I can imagine how epic it might feel like if it is your FIRST SHOW EVER though(god I feel old...) Yeah, all the Kids on here saying they just saw their first Dead or Phish show, its pretty cute. I am glad the boys are still making folks feel that good. Welcome to the club, kiddos.. (I am a ripe old 30 now..) At any rate, after 48 shows, I am pretty sure my glory days with phish (1997) are over, mostly because I, as a listener, have evolved, but I am glad to see Phish & the Dead mounting successful comebacks- I am ready for the comeback I care about- the CHEESE!

micapawgroove, I think Mimi was referring to the LSD, mushrooms, and weed he used to do, and not the heroin he was on for 10 years. I personally think Trey's lost it. I've seen Phish about 20 times since '99 and out of those shows, I only saw one good show. If you like them fine that's your choice, but I'm not gonna waste my time (or money) for a band I belive lost it's way, and YES Trey should phucking stop playing TAB songs at Phish shows! It makes a mediocre show flush itself down the toliet. Have fun on tour everyone, I'll go see the music I wanna.

I have nothing better to do with the next two minutes so I'm just going to write this even though the whole immature argument needs to end: mahgeetah hasn't said a single thing inappropriate. He stated a substance-filled opinion. He wasn't criticizing people. "Positivity" doesn't mean blindly approving of things and fearing other people disagreeing with you (Hello, Bush Era? not to get political, but..). "You know what I'm excited about? The future."

With phish playing concerts again, how bad can the world really be? That's my opinion, but I feel like it's time to spread some fun and have some laughs with a lot of old friends this summer.

It's totally ok to be critical of their music, but they're obviously trying to 'bring it', and that goes a Long Way in my book. If you want to be critical, at least keep a sense of humor about it.

One thing that I find heartening - and this is gonna sound strange; it's as if they're dating again after having a lot of years of booty calls. A lot of the post-hiatus material was really just a booty call - like, "don't worry about the song, just get to the jam". And as much as I like their jamming, if it isn't built on a tight foundation of the song, it's less impressive. Now it's like they're trying to impress each other, the fans - and they're trying to do right by the songs. They're dating again.

I mean, don't worry, we know they can jam. It's nice to hear them play.

Don't you know it's the first show of the first summer tour in 5 yrs? there's a lot that's gonna happen in the next few wks. sheesh.

Unfortunately, not everyone got to see Phish during their heyday. I saw some great shows in the mid-ninties. But lets just enjoy the fact that our boys are back rockin out. I can't wait to see them at Alpine and Red Rocks. If you are catchin your first show ever, have a blast, boogie down, and ignore all of the haters.

the best part of this show was that it was at Fenway. as far as Phish shows go this was a reunion show geared towards the new crowd. completely predictable set list. Tweezer 2nd set opener; Good Times Bad Times encore saw that in '04. Where's the '96-'98 funk??? Gordo and Fishman were rippin' as always, some very sick Gordo solos but the new Trey song was... a new Trey song. I'll be looking for that one on top 40 mainstream radio, right up there with?? i don't even know. doesn't sound like the phish I dropped into.

My main take is that the sound was clean, well rehearsed. so I think out of the gate this is a good start and the tour is going to lift off. their still on the runway here.

Highlights for me:

Ballad of Curtis Loew.. sick choice

Free.. one of hte best I ever heard

DWD / Stash / character zero all well done...

Time Turns Elastic...?? wow this is almost as laughable as shine. makes me look for the fast foward button.

DAVE VANN!!! Where's a picture of FISHMAN??? You know the drummer man! the clockwork caveman -breaking time into timeless

treys prolly standing up there like fuck not again. all you brahs in the front row need to trade your stubs to the ladies to keep trey from relapsing and walking off tour.

I'd be willing to bet that the kind of rampant pretentious douchbaggery that has been so present in the comments in this post is the reason that the comment system was changed in the first place. This kind of whining and negativity does nothing for anybody. Calling people posers? Fucking posers? Who the fuck are any of you to call someone a poser? Grow the fuck up

I can't wait to see Phish next week! Its going to be incredible

I think it's important to appreciate now for now, and appreciate your past experiences as past experiences. Saying, "Why wasn't this like 1997?" is a nowhere road. That was 12 years ago, and lots of things change. I think there's a lot to be excited about here. I mean, how many times have they encored with GTBT? A whole bunch, because it's a great encore.

You can be critical of the music, but be critical relative to the moment, not relative to history.

but on a more serious note: the boys are back. maybe not top form but the best ive heard in a long long time so lets not bitch and complain, lets take it for what it is. theyve been away for some time. they havent even been playing together for a year yet. The JB run should get the sound quirks figured out and let the boys settle in and get comfortable. then the rest of the tour should be FIRE! and even if you dont personally think so because you saw them pre 98' i dont wanna hear about it. save your negativity for US drug laws, the disco biscuts, umph or something that actually deserves a bad attitude. haha!

CANT WAIT!!!! SEE YALL KNOX>BROO>FOX>STARLAKE!!!!!!!

I can't wait for my tour to begin!! JB2, 3, Great Woods, Camden, Gorge!! My first show 1992 and I am still coming back. The show is only 3 hours of the experience!! Friends, the freaks, partying before and after, that is the show. Open your mind!! There is so much more happening than the guys on the stage!! It's an experience, not just a concert!! I have been to countless phish shows and tours, not to brag, just saying...... Stay loose and enjoy. You might not see the best show of the tour, but then again, you might!!!

i seriously can't believe the amount of whining and bickering that goes on between phish phans... seriously kids, calm down. i'm going to have the time of my life at alpine and red rocks this summer. even if those shows don't turn out to be their best there's no way in hell i won't be happy about it.

ok first off, Phish is never gonna be what they were back in the early-mid 90's and i must agree that opening with Sample was fucking lame but let me tell you, Phish was on fire last night considering the circumstances. The sound at Fenway kinda sucked but after listening ot the soundboard countless times i honestly can't say that Phish lost their way. They may be taking a step in a new direction but bands must evolve, even though we would all love to see them stay the same. Also one more thing, for those who say Phish has lost their jam, please listen to Stash, Bathtub, Tweezer and YEM (amazing vocal jam) from the show, and give Time Turns Elastic a chance too, it grows on you.

I thought the show had good energy, they sounded great but I needed a litle more Paige. Trey was smoking it but a little diversity in sounds creates room for exploration that seemed to be missing. It was not until YEM that Paige even took an extended solo.

i was at the show it was def a good one. it wasn't epic but damn they sounded tight and they played some good tunes. come destiny unbound, curtis loew, david bowie and a bunch more. don't listen to the haters if your thinking about goiing to a phish show this summer i suggest u def do it. for just getting back together and it being their 1st summer show i think they shredded it for sure. and from where i was sitting the sound was great i guess it just depended where u were sitting. gordon laid down some nasty licks on the bass and trey def shredded it. it wasn't there greatest show but well worth the drive i'll tell u that much.

Wow. Looking forward to the show tomorrow night. Kind of saddened by the talk... Looking at the 6/05 set list... MAN I WISH I WAS THERE!!! What an awesome couple of sets... I try not to hope for songs to be played, but I can never help but hope for Free and Wilson... Dang it all.

Have a great show peeps...
