Just when you thought the New Year's Run in the Bay Area could not possibly get any better, get ready for the soul-funk secret that the East Coast has been revelling in for the last couple years. None other than Topaz, the sixpiece groovemasters hailing from NYC are making their way left to fill the dancefloor with raw, manic, booty-shakin' energy.
They're gonna be doin' it right with a very special all night
long latenight throwdown, marking the first time that the Boom Boom Room has kept their doors open 'til the weeest of the wee hours. On Saturday, 12/29/01, you are cordially invited to attend the party among parties, a latenight extraganza featuring Topaz... and Friends. Did I forget to mention that? Not only will you be treated to a full set of pure Topazian bliss, if you can muster the stamina to make it as late as this band can, expect to see some familiar faces assisting the journey into the morning.
With that said, you may want to know just a tad more about what this Topaz is. For starters, Topaz is not only the band name but the man himself, Topaz... who takes one of the most selfless approaches to band-leading, tastefully adding accents to the groove on his alto sax while stepping back and letting the other band members shine. To compliment Topaz's horn, the manimal simply known as Squantch flairs with the trombone, occasionally treating the audience to some uber-organic sounds on the didgerdoo. They'll both step back and let Tewar lay down some sick licks and dirty chords on guitar, or let Ethan White sail the ship magestically with his wurlitzer. All the while, you've got the uber-rhythm duo of Jason Kriveloff on plumped out bass and the primal warrior of Christian Ulrich on drums.
If you need a more tangible idea of how they sound, their brand new release on the Soulive-spawning label Velour Recordings, The Zone, is making waves across the country, presenting Topaz in all their acid jazz/soul/funk glory.
And if you're a still a little shakey about trying out this unknown
urbanfunk force, you can get a taste right down the road earlier Saturday night at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium as Topaz gets
things fully involved before the String Cheese Incident. Topaz will be in the Polk Room at 7:00pm.
Get ready...
