311: New Album/Tour

cool. the chicago show is the day before i jet to spain for 2 weeks. i'll be taking it easy on the beach/pier for that show =)

BRIANK67, the last 2 times I was at Northerly Island, the beach was closed, as well as chicago park district cops were in usual asshole-mode, you know, frisking random people, looking thru peoples backpacks, confiscating beer and other "arrestables". I saw Ben Harper from the beach of few years ago, and it was great(i'm not even a big ben harper fan), but about a month later, I headed down there to meet some friends for tom petty on the beach, and the cops wouldn't even let you get within 30 feet of it, so we ended up just going home. Not sure how they are about the pier, but I know at Umphreys last summer the beach was closed as well.

ALSO- I know at an OAR show a few years back, as well as a rap show(lil bowow maybe?), the chicago suntimes had an article about major fights between drunk teenagers breaking out on the beach during both shows, and that is what led to the beach being closed during shows. I'm not knocking those artists, but it makes sense that the park district would shut down the beach because of people acting like idiots, but it just ruined a good thing for everyone else.(that didn't act like assholes).

Go figure, Chicago sucks. Good to see 311 get another album out, looking forward to the tour!

I was at the beach for Ratdog and ABB...during ratdog there was no security...me and my buddies were openly puffing and drinking and having a good time...as soon as Ratdog got on stage Pigs swarmed the beach...everyone was forced to dump their booze out...no one was smoking...they had a fire dancer put out his flamez....it was a real bummer! but I will mostly be on the Beach in Chi for this show!

looks like that chicago show is on a sunday, as in the last day of bonnaroo sunday, figures they'd screw chicago, on both legs of the tour...

and ya the beach being closed @ northerly island suxs, i tried going there for a show last fall and the cops were being total assholes, i got tix for the only solo nin show there tho, so i guess everything equals out.

oh and that new single sounds decent, i might have to check out the cd when it pops, hopefully its like soundsystem

Bout time for another 311 disk - their studio work has been more hit than miss, but the last 2 albums fell a little short. They never let up with the live shows, though... these guys are some of the hardest working stoners in show business. :-p Viva 311!

WTF? No Omaha? They snubbed their hometown crowd! Oh well, I guess. Their self-titled album was awesome, but they really went downhill from there. How many songs are there about space on the new album? How many times do they say 'whoooooa-oh'?

This new single, SUCKS! The last several albums have been mainly poppy crap, but I continued to speak highly. This new single just tops the cake. There are way to many Oh Whoas! I was going to head to the Atlanta show, but won't waste my time on an awful album tour. I sure hope the rest of the album is better than this single... I will see them on Tuesday in Knoxville, lets hope I get one more GOOD live show before I quit being a fan!

I heard Scott Stapp of Creed *really* likes these guys.

It boggles my mind why these amazing musicians continue to put out this bland, lazy music. It feels like the energy has been sucked right out of em.

i disagree. I would love to see an instrumental side project with every member except SA and nick hexum. Nick has turned into a egotistical pop-star meat head (hence the shitty discs recently). The others are cool cats

If you ever meet them you know what I am talking about. I have talked to Tim (guitarist) for a while before, totally chill. We talked about Jerry and Dimebag the entire time. DITCH NICK AND START JAMMING MORE

im actually looking forward to this album. Being a huge former fan, i still keep up with them occationally, and i do know that nick, the lead singer, talked about how the band's last album didnt have the commercial success that their previous ones had, yet they still sold out ampitheaters nationwide. This made them realize they can do whatever they want creatively and still will sell tickets. They have said this album was created more off jamming sessions than any other album before, so i have high hopes.

Btw this album name earns the award as the #2 lamest title ever behind STS9 - peaceblaster. (i'm a huge sts9 fan btw)

just listened to that single, and sadly it has a sound like it came from the "don't tread on me" album. they need to get back to transistor!

Phish made me realize that I was wasting my life listening to 311. and I'm not fucking kidding.

311's first 4 albums were great minus a lot of their lyrics, their last album was complete garbage and the one before that wasn't great either... in fact the albums have consistently gotten worse and worse since Soundsystem in 1999. so 311 has officially sucked for 10 years. HAPPY ANIVERSARY!!!!

they have played the same setlist for 15 years, I even watched the first half of their set at Rothbury for nostalgia purposes... same old shit... and Nick Hexum came out wearing White Jeans and a White Wife Beater. what a queer.... oops I mean, "Oh My Gay!!!"

I go to 311 shows to dump off work, make fun of the opening acts, (minus snoop last year), and hoping that they play old material.

i just read some comments and it's funny... I AM ALSO A HUGE FORMER FAN OF THIS BAND... but it's not making me look forward to this abortion of an album... i am now listening to the song jambase posted with this article... these guys need to just stop. quit. ditch the reggae bullshit... all the best parts of the song are the non-reggae, non-good charlotte-guitar parts. quit now so you can retire while you're semi-young... you used to be my favorite band ever and now you sound like watered-down Pepper and Slightly Stoopid with pop rock guitars during the chorus... quit now or eat acid while you write music... you can still redeem yourselves...

IMO 311's studio albums have fallen WAY off since Soundsystem. Lyrically and musically its just lacking something. I've seen their live show about 10 times, the last being about 4 years ago, and they are always a great time. Go see 311!!

keeping it brief: wow somebody has way too much time to be thumbs-down'ing everything; chicago > all of TN combined (i mean, especially in terms of live music, you must have been joking, right?); and i had a good time out on the beach/pier for the allmans and ratdog last year, i kept my shit together and didn't get hassled by the (arrogant) cops out there but i dunno if they've been really clamping down otherwise; spain spain spain :p ....

back to the topic, i'm a huge fan of old 311 (transistor is my fav) but i appreciate the vibes these guys have been bringing for 20 years, even if their music can get pretty mediocre recently...

wow RonCronDon are you serious--311 in the klan?! please post up a source to go with a claim like that or just keep it to yourself, because i really don't think this band in particular are in the klan.... anyway, concerning their music, i suggest you check out their older albums soundsystem and transistor.

I think what RonCronDon remembers hearing, and what I heard, was that 311 stands for 3x the 11th letter in the alphabet, that being "K." Only some bored people could come up with this kind of stuff.

This is the lyric that broke my heart:

"Not one to be over sounding like the norm, friendly to the radio, all that shit is corn..." Unfortunately, 311 became exactly what they were singing about in Omaha Stylee. What a shame...

Here's the break down. IMO..."Unity" was good. "Music" was a masterpiece. "Grassroots" was very, very good. (Here is when they started wearing eyeliner and letting MTV place the proverbial dong in their soup) The Blue album was ok. Everything after that all sounds like feeble attempts to recreate the magic they once had. I saw them 10 times. First time was in Lincoln, Neb. in 1994 on the Grassroots tour. This band was my life back then. 311 is a young man's band with 5 old guys in it. They cant maintain their youthful energy anymore because they are tired. I don't hear any evolution.

I've seen 311 6 or 7 times, the best being years ago at Lakewood when they played the entire Grassroots album and then half of Music for the encore. Great band, great message but I haven't been as in to them lately. Hope they bring it on the new album.

There are few bands I've been a fan of as long or as strong as I have 311. I even overlooked the progressively less good albums because I put more weight on a live show anyway. But when I got tired of hearing the same tired setlist over and over year in and year out (Down dedicated "to all the old school 311 fans... ugh. no more please), I gave up. That was a couple years ago. After hearing this new single, I know I made the right choice. They might still do it for some, but they just lost the magic for me.

Grassroots & Soundsystem are my faves! I did not care for From Chaos or DTOM. The rest are great albums! They are definitely a fun live band! Hopefully the new album and tour with Ziggy brings out the classic show in them!

I think the new stuff is lacking. SOme of there stuff is just monotone bore. I dont think can comppletely write them off. They have some songs that def have some energy, and they put on a good show when i saw them at spac 2 summers ago. But that was when they were on the bill with everyones favorite Matisyahu..... i think he has a couple good songs too, but thats about it.

Why are so many people in the jam band community against 311, but in the same breath will give major lovehugs to bands like DMB. I agree with dogmusk, mainstream is not a bad thing unless you're specifically dumbing down your music to fit into that mainstream. 311 fans seem to be happy with their stuff so I'm all right with it.
