WE LIGHT A CANDLE TO AN UNDER-SUNG MODERN GUITAR COWBOY

Tomorrow is Mike McCready's 43rd birthday, and we're damn glad he's around. The Pearl Jam guitarist is a modern descendent of Hendrix, immersed in feel emboldened by technical flash with a dash of dumbstick '70s arena rock a la early influences Joe Perry (Aerosmith) and Ace Frehley (KISS). With the 1000 watt personality of Eddie Vedder front-and-center in PJ, it's sometimes easy to miss the really talented cats on stage with him. McCready, along with bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard, founded Pearl Jam in 1990, and together they've helped walk forward what we call "classic rock," finding connections with luminaries like Neil Young, Peter Frampton and The Who. McCready is a shredder for the ages and we wish him a super swell natal day on Sunday.

Before we get our fingers sticky with PJ, here's Mike paying tribute to Jimi.

You can hear all the hours McCready has spent alone with Electric Ladyland on this beautiful mess.

One of the base couplets in Pearl Jam's DNA is the MC5. They're joined by some ol' Seattle pals on this roaring take on the 5's signature tune.

Next, McCready jamming on Dylan with Eddie and Moonalice's G.E. Smith.

This is what John Cale once termed "Dirty Ass Rock 'n' Roll." Enjoy!

The Flying-V comes out for this tremendous version of one of the standouts on No Code.

These guys kind of emerged ready to blow away soccer stadiums full of howling fans. Case in point, this blazer from 1992. A splendid crowd dive from Eddie in this clip.

Besides Pearl Jam, McCready has been involved in many other projects over the years, including Mad Season, a short lived band that included the late Alice In Chains singer Layne Staley and Mark Lanegan and Barret Martin of The Screaming Trees.

Remember when there was rock 'n' roll on MTV?

One good turn with Neil deserves another.

For all their aptitude at sturm und drang, part of Pearl Jam's strength and widespread appeal is their skill at acoustic turns, like this simmering 1999 take on a great b-side.

We end this week with an appropriately windmilling salute to one of their heroes. Good luck out in the fields, kids…

And don't forget, you can eyeball video sweetness 24/7 with JamBase TV.

Great choice for this week! One of my all times favorites and the shows they did with Neil Young must have been a sight to behold.

As far as live shows go, not many can bring it like Pearl Jam does.

PJ Rocks Live. Although they are not a jamband, they certainly Jam! Eddy is always bring the peace and love out. Happy Birthday Mike! YOu have more talent than most people give you credit for. PJ is one of those bands that a live performance will change the way you feel about this band, In a good way. I have seen them 3 times and its always a different show, different set list, and different jam sessions. They certainly will be around for a long time.

Like to say thanks to all the guys in PJ and also most for Temple of the Dog. Most everything they have done kicks some serious ass.

Love me some pearl jam. Never have thought they got the credit they deserve simply due to Nirvana. Not trying to bash Nirvana, but Cobain going out when they were on top really left them with the legend status, whereas PJ has consistently made great music for almost 20 years now. Love Vedders acoustic solo stuff and I'm glad theyre leaving hope that mainstream rocknroll isn't completely dead yet.

Man o man, I watched that 1992 Pinkpop Porch which also had a stellar Why Go/Even Flow version linked to it, it was stellar! They had so much fire back in the day. Still great, Pearl Jam puts on a good show almost every night even nowadays. Go see them if you can (and I hear you will be able to this fall!!!) you will be amazed at the twin guitar attack from Mike and Stone. And of course, Eddie is the definitive "alternative" front man of the last 20 years.

As good as Mad Season was, they didn't have Mark Lanegan in the group. He did some guest vocals but nothing more. Regardless, great band.

It's amazing how The Who, Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix, and Pearl Jam have similiar flavors, tastes, sounds, and nuances...just like a fine wine that ages over time. Thanks Mike!

McReady, as an individual guitarist is definitely an underated talent in his generation. Pearl Jam keeps getting better with age and their live shows are sick. I hope Mookie Blaylock keeps pumpin' out the songs for years to come.

Love PJ, seen em twice and both times have been unreal. When Eddie introduces Neil in RITFW with "you know this guy", is that a reference to the Last Waltz? Robbie Robertson said the same thing upon Neil's entrance.

PJ is the bomb b.... MaineJam I bet it is a reference, or at least I'd like to think so because that's cool. thanks for pointing that out

Yeah Pearl Jam is one of those forgotten bands for anyone who isn't already into them, they hear yellow ledbetter and think yeah they are just some radio friendly band from the 90's, well all you wanna be hippies need to check their history before you judge because Mike is one of the most unreal guitarists ever, he jams like hendrix so fluent and so inspired...yeah so don't bash a band you know nothing about. Happy birthday Mike, and I can't wait to catch this band on tourrrrrrrrr!!!!
