WE LIGHT A CANDLE TO AN UNDER-SUNG MODERN GUITAR COWBOY
Tomorrow is Mike McCready's 43rd birthday, and we're damn glad he's around. The Pearl Jam guitarist is a modern descendent of Hendrix, immersed in feel emboldened by technical flash with a dash of dumbstick '70s arena rock a la early influences Joe Perry (Aerosmith) and Ace Frehley (KISS). With the 1000 watt personality of Eddie Vedder front-and-center in PJ, it's sometimes easy to miss the really talented cats on stage with him. McCready, along with bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard, founded Pearl Jam in 1990, and together they've helped walk forward what we call "classic rock," finding connections with luminaries like Neil Young, Peter Frampton and The Who. McCready is a shredder for the ages and we wish him a super swell natal day on Sunday.
Before we get our fingers sticky with PJ, here's Mike paying tribute to Jimi.
You can hear all the hours McCready has spent alone with Electric Ladyland on this beautiful mess.
One of the base couplets in Pearl Jam's DNA is the MC5. They're joined by some ol' Seattle pals on this roaring take on the 5's signature tune.
Next, McCready jamming on Dylan with Eddie and Moonalice's G.E. Smith.
This is what John Cale once termed "Dirty Ass Rock 'n' Roll." Enjoy!
The Flying-V comes out for this tremendous version of one of the standouts on No Code.
These guys kind of emerged ready to blow away soccer stadiums full of howling fans. Case in point, this blazer from 1992. A splendid crowd dive from Eddie in this clip.
Besides Pearl Jam, McCready has been involved in many other projects over the years, including Mad Season, a short lived band that included the late Alice In Chains singer Layne Staley and Mark Lanegan and Barret Martin of The Screaming Trees.
Remember when there was rock 'n' roll on MTV?
One good turn with Neil deserves another.
For all their aptitude at sturm und drang, part of Pearl Jam's strength and widespread appeal is their skill at acoustic turns, like this simmering 1999 take on a great b-side.
We end this week with an appropriately windmilling salute to one of their heroes. Good luck out in the fields, kids…
