The Dead Perform "Friend of The Devil" on "The View"

Phil knows his roll, the harmonies were nice. Those women did not know the year Jerry died or that they are not called the Grateful Dead anymore. If I performed that poorly at work they would can my ass.

"Friend of the Devil" is a song recorded by the Grateful Dead. The music was written by Jerry Garcia and John Dawson and the lyrics are by Robert Hunter. It is the second track of the Dead's 1970 album American Beauty.

didnt know the song was 39 years old.

really? How many jambase readers do you picture ever watching the view? I refused to watch today even with them on. I knew that it would be on the internets eventually and I could fast forward through the shrilling voices.

phunkyjedi08 never been impressed with Warren Haynes? Are you crazy? What is not impressive about Warren Haynes? Maybe it is incredible solo performances, his rock your face work with Gov't Mule, his taking the ABB to new places every time they play (See 15 nigth Beacon Run), or his ability to fit right in with The Dead or Phil and Friends, not to mention all his work with charitable organizations (See Christmas Jam among other things). Not very impressive at all huh??

I'm with Danalog - "Is that worth $100?" - NOPE! The only stop they make this tour that's going to be worth a shitload of $$$ is Rothbury, I would go, but I've made my commitments to Bonnaroo already. So have fun at the Roth. Actually if you want a cheap awesome show, I checked out this MOONALICE band thats been advertised on this site which features, Barry Sless (AMAZING!), G E Smith (SNL), Jack Cassady (Hot Tuna) and other amazing artists. They came through AZ and I saw them at this local dive-bar for $8 for almost 3hrs of rockin music. Cassady is abscent for a month for important family obligations, but they still brought it. Sless is the MAN when it comes to steel guitar and reminds me of the good ol days with Phil and Friends with Warren and Jimmy Herring. The bar was almost empty and they still brought it...even playing a heart wrenching version of "Stella Blue," so the fact that I can go and see a band like this, whose new album is produced by Grammy Award Winner T Bone Burnnett, for only $8 in such an intimate setting for a great night rather then pay $100 for a couple hours of noodling in an amphitheater, squinting just to make out whose who in the band, then I'll save my money and stick to the local scene.

This sounded like crap! I really feel bad for all the people that spent $100 on a ticket if this is what they're going to be getting. Warren's solo at the beggining was the only redeemable moment. Phil's voice sucks!

I thought they sounded OK but to have to listen to those 4 women minus maybe Whoppi with Bill douchebag left a bad taste in my mouth. And don't Knock on Phil, when is he ever known as a singer. It was apparent that the band had no idea what was going to be asked becauuse they were talking about Jerry and it looked like it threw them off. You would think they might mention the fact that they are auctioning off a bunch of front row tickets to charity or the free shows but to bring up Jerry this many years later is a disgrace. Plus all the people in the audience got a free cd that I have to wait till april to even get.I think that is about it and I can't wait till the shows.

What an all-time low. The Dead on Bitcharama. I figured they would suck without Jerry but The View? Wow! Have you no pride, guys? This is worse than hearing Phil destroy Fire On The Mountain, which is quite painful to listen to. As mentioned above, FOTD was a very appropriate pick.

It was like fitting a square peg into a round hole just waiting in anticipation of what was to happen. Those shows are so formatted, it seemed the interview part was a waste of time. What did we learn....nothing we already knew. Song selection good. Performance...average. What was the point...still figuring that one out. Nice to hear the "borrow from the devil, borrow from a friend" verse. Unexpected. Did anyone catch the little head flinch Weir did when Whoopi G. said everyone in the audience was leaving with a copy of a CD?

Whoever feels the need to consistently bash Warren Haynes needs to shut the F up and check the facts. Forget about the golden, heartbreaking voice or the crazy guitar god-ness...The man is touring with 3 different bands (2 of which are standard bearers of this thing we call jam.)All the while he is recording a new Gov't Mule album, doing charity work, and giving us Christmas Jam and Mountain Jam!

Listen to his guitar work on the Allmans Beacon run- MVP status! His style and tone have become a huge part of the Allmans overall sound.

Warren is the hardest working man on the scene, hands down... And instead of ruining his middle years with hard drugs like so many of our idols have, he's busy building homes for the less fortunate. Think about it, haters.

Strainger Tue 3/31/2009 08:52AM

OK....some of these comments are the stupidest I've heard in years. First, Phil has never been a good singer, you make it sound like he "lost" his singing ability or something. Second, the only show I'm seeing is the Gorge, the best venue around, for $50 and that includes the Doobie and Allmans Bros. too., so brooklynite84, you're an idiot.

Thirdly, I do agree with sgawsfan as to Warrens contribution to the music world, anyone who says he sucks is also a dumbass. And matt_lennon is also right on about Warren channeling Jerry, what a vocal and he is the best man for the job. Sure this tour wont be like 78, but for all of us who love the dead it will be a fun trip down memory lane, may be the last Dead show of my life, and I'm going to love it, no matter what all you whiney, critical, know-it-all, dumbasses say.
