A Little Different then a free show at a Park, wouldn't you say? 40 years ago this would not stand why should it today. There should be people linning up on the streets outside of every venue that they play, march 30, and demand a free show in central park! Lets get back on the ball people, and keep the music live!

2.Start/End Dates. Sweepstakes begins at 6:00 PM Eastern Time (3:00 PM Pacific Time) on Friday, March 27, 2009 and ends at 8:59:59 PM Eastern Time (5:59:59 PM Pacific Time) on Friday, March 27, 2009.

Only 3 hours to enter? I wonder how many people caught this at the right time.

I was lucky enough to see this e-mail before the deadline. My brother, who gets their mailing list, did not receive the e-mail, so I wonder how selective the Dead are being. "40 years ago this would not stand why should it today" Because this isn't the sixties Piercy1. I mean they're playing a free show, who's complaining?

What is this? Hey we're playing 3 shows a mile from where you live but you can't come because either A. You were busy on Friday, B. You don't like junkmail or C. You are a die hard deadhead but just unlucky. Not quite the way it worked at Haight Ashbury.

Set up a stage in central park and turn on the world.

Yeah i think they are only sending it to ppl who have bought tickets in NY or atleast been buying tickets off their site or something. I got it last night just checked today and was pumped and noticed it was like a 3 hr time spand from announcement to end of sale. pretty crazy. wonder how many got to register? i sure think it would of been a good chance to win if i would of got in.

this is an interesting idea. why 3 different venues in one day? i'm definitely NOT going, but how close are these venues to each other? 3 different places in one day, in NYC, sounds like it would be tough to make it to each show....

Deadpig - I won't shut up...The Boss, Coldplay, DMB are not the Dead and have always had outrageous ticket prices, but not the Dead. I have a job and work hard for my money and I do have enough to pay for a show or two but I won't cause it's ridiculous to pay that much when I paid only $115 for Voodoo Fest last year around Halloween in NOLA and that was for 3 days of Music full of major artists and to tell me that I can't be upset for Tix being just as much for The Dead without Jerry is pathetic. Like I've said many of times, I'm not paying triple the amount that I paid for in 2004. It's not the Grateful Dead, it's the Dead. Hope they have fun on The View and Maybe their next stop will be Ellen or Tyra...

all the complainers are pretty lame. I'd be ashamed to have "fans" like yourselves. If you want to see 4 members of the GD with warren haynes and jeff chimenti, or phish, the options are there for you this summer. So just shut the fuck up and dance or make more room for me, because i'll happily take the spot that your jadded asses won't be filling. Last chance to see the remaining members of the GD, take it or leave it.

Glad to not be a part of this SHIT anymore.. I am very psyched to go see John McLaughlin and Chick Corea at the Flynn Theatre in VT on May 1st, a show worth traveling for from CO, with my family(My Mom and Dad actually). I see why my dad laughed at this scene then and now..back when I saw a lot of shows with Jerry this crap never happened...the remaining members can piss up a rope and Warren should Play with the MULE or The Brothers

Yea, how lame the Dead is playing not one, not two, but THREE free shows. You people need to get a fucking grip. And you're right, Warren shouldn't be playing with the Dead, he shit all over the '04 tour with his recycled southern rock licks.

It's too bad Rosie's not on The View anymore. Her and Warren could have a pie-eating contest.

Seriously tho.... with all the ticketing bullshit, why not play one fucking night, two sets at madison sqare? whats the biggest venue in NYC? fuckin' A, WHY NOT CENTRAL PARK? is it too cold at night this time of year? fuck it do it during the daytime like oldschool Golden Gate Park shows?

I believe the tagline of Outside Lands Festival was "Radiohead is the first Band to EVER play at Golden Gate Park in the dark." So does that mean Grateful Dead 40 years later are "ABOVE" playing outside during the daytime?

Garth Brooks has played in Central Park and that shit was broadcast live on HBO.

Are The Dead too lazy to hire a company to build a fence, erect a stage, hoist some lights and speakers into the air, and direct traffic outside the place?

Oh wait, THAT WOULD COST THEM SOME OF THEIR OWN MONEY.

being down in central florida, well off the deads tour path, I'd pay whatever tickets cost (within reason of course) just to see them again. It would be cool if everything in the world were free, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. I love my career, but I only do it about five or ten percent of the time for free, thus is the way of the world. Dolla Dolla bills yo.

How's this for a kicker - The Gramercy Theater is directly across the street from my apartment building. I am a hardcore, true blue, post-Jerry deadhead college student, and my favorite band on this planet is playing a free show at an intimate venue literally 50 yards from my place of residence and I can't go because I didn't win tickets. Not to hate on the lucky folks who won tickets, the cosmos aligned for them. It would be more in the spirit of the Grateful Dead if they were to play a free show in central. Either way, I'm ditching class and sitting outside the Gramercy all day monday . . . I need a miracle.

Here's one some of you aren't going to like hearing:

Last I knew, The Dead WERE NOT the same thing as Madonna, Dave Matthews, and all the other crappy bands that charge "stick in the eye" prices for tickets. Of course they need to make money like all of us, but from what I remember they always were more reasonably priced than whatever the contemporary pop crap flavor of the month was. Comparing the $100.00 arena tickets to what Prince or Brittney charges doesn't hold up in my book. They used to be an "alternative" to all that. Maybe they still are, but just in a different way...They don't "owe" me anything, other than maybe a chance to see a show at a decent price that's not in a building that was designed for sporting events. It's just disappointing to see things degenerate into this....

Funny thing is that NO other band since The Grateful Dead, The Boys, have sold out a stadium show Except for the Dave Mathews Band, not even our beloved new The Boys, Phish. No One!!!!!!! That is a touring band in OUR scene. No One!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mmmm...now that's not true....didn't MJ just sell out 50 nights at Wembley?

It's probably impossible to run a large tour these days without one of the big promoter companies involved.

Hopefully, they will make an HD DVD of the tour or a show or two.

Then again, I will probably grumble about the price of that, too.....

Despite their reputation, The Grateful Dead never traveled the world giving free concerts. They were not musical Robin Hoods, just kind guys who made music, and made it well. “Comparing the $100.00 arena tickets to what Prince or Brittney charges doesn't hold up in my book”, nor mine.

The Dead are an alternative to crappy music, and as such, deserve more pay than crappy musicians. In this case, they are being paid HALF as much… AND you get to have a recording for free! Yet, you whiny little bitches want more. You are like the wookie who hits a bowl, then complains it’s not a fresh greenie! You are worse fans than Brittney’s and should be ashamed! Rest assured your “kind” will not be missed!

I don't understand all of the 'fans' who feel as though these bands owe you something. If you don't like what they are doing just don't go. They definitely don't have to to come to your house and play a free concert for you just because you are their biggest fan. You are as selfish as you claim these bands to be.
