The Dead Auctions Front-row Tickets for Charity

By JOHN ROGERS
Associated Press Writer

The Dead
It was time, says The Dead's Bob Weir, to give charitable causes a boost while directing a kick to the hindquarters of ticket scalpers.

So he and his bandmates announced Tuesday they have held back some of the best seats for their forthcoming spring tour, and are putting them up for bid in an online auction.

Want to sit in the third row, center-stage-right, for the tour's opening show April 12 in Greensboro, N.C.? The bidding starts at $250 at charityfolks.com.

Proceeds will benefit a number of charities the group has supported for years, including its Rex Foundation, which was established by the Grateful Dead in 1983 and provides grants to support the arts, science, education and other causes.

"Needless to say, like any charity these days, their revenues are down right now. They're hurting," Weir said Tuesday in a phone interview. "We want to do what we can to keep these folks up and running and in business."

Successful bidders won't be able to collect their tickets until the day of a show to minimize scalping, Weir said.

Weir said he hoped the auction would raise at least $250,000. Other charities the group is supporting include the Further Foundation, which works for environmental and social causes; the Unbroken Chain Foundation, which supports community service projects; and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, which is dedicated to protecting oceans and marine life.

Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann is an avid supporter of the latter. "I live in Hawaii and right now it's humpback whale season and we see them here," he said by phone Tuesday. "At the rate they are being slaughtered for ocean fishing there won't be any left."

The Dead will perform on "The Late Show With David Letterman" on Thursday, April 23. Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and touring guitarist Warren Haynes will be interviewed and perform acoustically on “The View," Monday, March 30. Complete tour dates available here.

WTF? wow man i feel like ive turned to the dark side for supporting this shnanigans... i mean as if you werent trying to weasel all your fans in the first place , its like you sat around and said we can charge em a fortune, then as soon as they buy those up will offer the good seats to the highest bidder then water it down saying we re helping charities (good for you, most are yours anyway) while sticking it to the man.. i think not i think you just made all the scalpers grins grow from ear to ear, people are bitching about ticket prices so you announce you got the best seats to the highest bidder wow

They campaigned, and they campaigned hard for a man who today laughed at his base who thought he would offer marijuana reform. And then to further slap us in the face, there was another federal raid on a marijuana dispensary in San Fran today despite his promises that they are stopped. I have lost lots of respect for these men. God bless Jerry, if only he were still here to hold them together.

Hey smashy...BO did not just laugh off the issue. Today was a forum about economic recovery. While reforming Marijuana Laws could help stimulate the tax base, I believe that there are other priorities for that particular forum. It is really a crime and punishment issue. As far as a Federal raid today..that decision is made by the justice department. I am all for legalization and I believe that Obama will entertain a dialogue like no other before him. Just not today.

I understand wanting to give to charity, but seriously for the price they charged originally some of it should go to charity anyways, what ever happened to fans buying the seats they wanted when they went on sale, between scalpers and everything else, i think im sticking with smaller bands for a while, I just cant afford to be a fan these days

Obama's first response to the question of marijuana reform was to laugh and his second was to shoot it down. I voted for this man thinking he was open-minded enough to realize how the war on drugs is hurting us all. Furthermore, the economic forum is the best place to discuss legalization. Key American economists, including Milton Friedman, have supported it and claimed the taxes could raise 500 BILLION DOLLARS within about a half-decade. I'm rather disgusted with Obama for now and I hope these guys feel the same.

He chose to answer that question out of 100,000! The fact that he even brought the issue up is incredible to me. He laughed and said that the question reflects the type of people participating in the forum and thus, in politics today. Give him time. He obviously feels comfortable with this issue and has been given an A grade by many legitimate Pro-Marijuana organizations. What do you guys expect? For him just come out and legalize marijuana overnight??? I guarantee you we will see less people go to jail for marijuana under Obama than under Bush, Mcain, or any other Republican administration. Chill the fuck out and give the guy a chance.

Man I really hate to bash on the Dead. Having been to Shoreline many, many times I can tell you that the front rows, AA-DD, contain about 94 - 100 seats. The auction for the Thursday night show lists every one of those seats available for auction. How is this saving SOME of the best seats? They were more generous to us on the first night by leaving 2 dozen of those 94 prime seats available through ticketmaster. I'm all for raising $$ for charity, but this is a Joke.

i love the dead, but it also seems like their pocket books are hurting. i've been to every dead family show within the last 17 years that was within a few hour drive. i've also driven two days to see them as well, such as Alpine Valley. i will not be going to a local show this year, due to the outrageous ticket prices. why would they wait to announce this? most people who were already to pay ridiculous prices, already did. WTF?

as for Obama, i couldn't watch the forum, because i have a job and had to work today. it's too bad he laughed at that question, because states rights should have already been recognized, since it's in a thing called The Constitution. i think those that believe strongly in the reformation of marijuana laws need to stop paying their taxes. that's also in the constitution. the government doesn't spend money in the interest of many of us, especially given handouts to the rich wall st. executives as well as the lazy and the minorities, while the middle class hardworkers get screwed. we all need to take our 1040's and roll a big spliff with them.

i'm just spitballin' here, but, wouldn't keeping Business interests & personal interests seperate, be the righteous thing-to-do here? If they want to be charitable, i'm sure they could do it with their own money, or, at least, in other ways... not with the tickets to the gemmy seats each one of us go to bed hoping to wake up with.

You'd think they'd have a enough creative people around them to come up with better ideas to raise money for their charitable interests, than to weed out the Uber-wealthy demographic in their audience and skew the lottery/luck/karmic factor in obtaining a ticket for the rest of us economically-depressed fans. Are you telling me that theres' no room for charity in each of the $100 tickets? Ouch.

From the ticket prices to getting involved in politics i am starting to have unhappy thoughts towards the dead at times. Anybody that voted for Obama or believe(s)d anything he says got duped. No matter how hard Bob Weir and Phil Lesh try to grab the spotlight they'll always know that Jerry was and is 10x the enlightened individual that they are. Watch those rehearsal videos on dead.net, Billy is a cool dude, but its easy to see through Bob and Phil for the deuchebags they are. When we both went to check out, our orders got screwed. We ended up settling for upper deck seats. I live in TX and had made plans go to up there for the shows and go to MSG for the first time. I even sent an emailing how i was bummed out and they replied back, check back as they may release more tickets later. I fucking LOVE Grateful Dead music--probably more than any other music I've heard...so this is hard to say. For so many years, they made being out of touch with "reality" an art--something to strive for and experiment with and even learn from...now with the ticket fiasco surrounding this tour, I feel like they're out of touch with reality in a different, not so good way. There is no other way to put it: this band seems really elitist now. Normal people are losing their jobs right now, not watching humpback migration from their Hawaiian veranda (no disrespect and much love to the humpbacks--I love them too). But seriously, dropping that much money on a ticket, travel incidentals, and some $7 stale beers--how may heads can fuckin do that right now?!?! I know people are gonna make it happen because it's a priority for them, but my opinion is they shouldn't have to sacrifice that much bread and butter to pay for the Dead's caviar.

Is it fair when someone with half your talent gets paid twice as much as you?

Madonna charges $378; Elton John : $306; The Eagles : $279; AC/DC : $263; Tina Turner : $263; Celine Dion : $240; Bruce Springsteen : $235; Coldplay : $217; Neil Diamond : $217; The Police : $216.

Most here would agree The Dead have more talent than any of those acts… yet their ticket prices are less than half!

Why don’t you work for me at half price? You’re supposed to be cool... right? If you aren’t kind enough to work for half price, why do you bitch and whine when The Dead do?

Dead's caviar? are you kidding me?

C'mon guys. Everyone knows this is pretty much the retirement tour. Jill wants Phil out and soon, and he wanted one last trip across the country with the boys. I agree that, for stadium rock per the groups listed above, the ticket prices aren't bad. They've got to fill the coffers one last time...

Can't we all just enjoy one more go at it, and then have a blow-out party dead-style on the 4th?

I love the dead more than anything. they have helped me so much. they inspire me, they radiate positivity through and through.. listening to them is bliss. there was nothing more that i wanted then to see the boys together again.. but 100 dollars? i'm out of the job. but even if had a job would I want to pay this to dance in a nosebleed seat, where you feel like your listening to the radio and watching a jumbo-tron, and you feel like your going to fall to your death onto the three point line. and a 100 dollars for predictable warren haynes? I wish they would realize people want to see them and not in the front row. But all that money and all those service charges for a seat where you cant even spin move or slide. I love the dead and will listen to them forever, but I cant see them and it saddens me. pretend like this tour doesnt exist.. wait for Phil and friends and Ratdog. support local music, listen to jerry.

I'm not sure what complaint I 'proved", but I wasn’t joking. We live in a capitalist society in which market forces known as supply and demand set prices. The market is live music and The Dead sell a ride in a Ferrari for 75% less than Madonna charges for a ride in her Mitsubishi Eclipse! If the demand for Madonna’s ride earns her that much, I think The Dead are worth more! I know everyone here has pissed away $100 for much less. But, if you feel you get more from a bag of weed than from a show, put on some headphones and smoke the bag… just don’t complain about the band (and many of us here) believing their performances are a better value! Maybe you should direct your complaints to those (possibly your girlfriend!), who inflate industry prices by paying Coldplay twice as much as The Dead! Or just quit your bitching… because you sound like a bunch of whiners!

Reading some of these comments is very disheartening. For so called fans to feel it necessary to condemn an artist for the price of tickets to a show obviously proves they have no idea how the music business works. The price includes not only payment to the band but to the entire crew who prepares the venue for the event. Those stages don't just magically set themselves up and the lighting and sound engineers are top notch professionals who command a decent wage. Add in the cost of renting the venue (try paying for Madison Square Garden for one night)the security, ticket takers, emergency staff and back office personel and you begin to realize that the artist receive just a small portion of the ticket price. I've been fortunate enough to know and even play with most members of the Grateful Dead and have spent time in their homes. I can assure you that none of them is a selfish rockstar who goes home after a gig and rolls around in his walk in safe full of money. I've been seeing shows since the early 70's and can safely say that I've seen more shows than most of you on this board. The first thing you should all know is that given their druthers every memeber of the band would tell you that would prefer to play small 500 seat venues for free. Unfortunately, that would be nearly impossible due to their huge fan base and the ensuing riots it would cause. I'm not posting here to bash anyones opinion but I think everyone should show just a little respect to a band that started the entire Jam Band Scene. If it wasn't for the Grateful Dead there would be no Phish, WSP, Moe, or Keller Williams. Ask any of them. In addition, the Dead have sacraficed millions of dollars by being the first band to openly allow taping at their shows so the music could spread for free. As Jerry once told me, "I only own the note for a split second and once its played its gone and belongs to the people." Its that kindred spirit that inspired me to be a musician because I wanted to bring as much joy and love to the world as this band has.....naively I didn't realize just how high the Grateful Dead set the bar. So again, have some respect for the band that started it all and take into consideration that these folks were the first band to have donated huge sums to very worthy causes. I don't see any other bands in any other music genre that can make that claim. As it was in the beginning, not only are the Grateful Dead the best at what they do, they are still the only ones who do what they do. With that said I hope to see you all at a show.

Brahnnie - that sounds like a great idea. Maybe there could even be a chain of restaurants for adults to hang out kind of like CHucky Cheese, but for adults. There could be mechanical likenesses of The Greatfull Dead playing music while old people discussed their investments and the the relationship of the market price of way too expensive concert tickets. It's is the Dead's right to charge that much. It is people's right to pay that much. Doesn't mean it's not outrageous.

Sorry, no more money for these greedy old men....Phish is touring and tickets are HALF the price of this particular nostalgia trip. Why is that?

"Talent" has nothing to do with ticket prices. How did MJ sell out 50 nights at The O2 in London? I was a long term head, but I am ready to burn all my Dead crap, I am so pissed off over the blatant screwing of the fans. I know that's "The American way" but I fell for the myth that this band was something "different" Take a look at the politics of the guy who owns AEG...See what your ticket money will be spent on...most of the "causes" that this band supports will be undermined by the pr spin paid for with the revenues generated by the ticket sales. What a joke! Kind of like believing in a politician or a preacher....Pretty sad once you wake up and see what's really going on in this charade. Call me a cynic if you want, but I am not supporting this BS any longer. This whole Dead thing is a failed social experiment...look at how it's turned out...filling the coffers of someone that has views diametrically opposed to the "philosophy and lifestyle" of the artist that you will pay through the nose to see....Way to go, "Dead" nice job in fleecing your own flock. How are you any "different" than the institutions that you are supposedly an "alternative" to? I just don't buy the BS any longer.....Have fun kiddies, Billy needs a new boat and AEG needs to convince you that global warming is a myth. As the old reporter's line goes, "Follow the money"

So... I am fortunate, I graduated from college in Dec and found a great job! But, what about the fans who dont have a job or enough money to pay the $100 per ticket... it seems that the Dead (Grateful Dead), a band built on a movement that is supposed to stand against money, society and capitalism, should not have some of the most expensive, if not the most expensive tickets this year... I can see Elton John/Billy Joel for about $45 for a seat... I havent looked at all of the Dead's prices... but it seems that it is a lot more than that!!!! I love GD but this seems hypocritical...

Some of you freedom fighters need to chill the fuck out and stop making such a big deal out of this. Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like such a non-issue to me.

I love the Grateful Dead. I like the Dead. I am though getting sick of entitled Dead Heads. They whine when they take away the soundboards, they whine when the tickets are too much, they whine when they would rather hear Steve Kimock over Warren Haynes.

Well "The Dead" don't owe you anything. They are hitting the road to play some music and make some money. If you have the money and think you'd enjoy the music then go but it just makes you look like idiots to complain about it on the Internet all day.

Yes they are trying to make some money, is that so evil? They are OLD men and aren't nearly as well off as most of you think. They have families to support.

Also I am sick of people saying you can see Phil and Friends for $25. Maybe 5 years ago but these days Phil tix are $50-60. I do think the entertainment industry is WAY too expensive but honestly compared to other acts The Dead really aren't screwing anybody.

I'm not going to defend The Dead Inc. for their prices. However, I think it is very cool that they are fighting the Scalpers Inc. by auctioning off seats for charity. Scalpers are much more of a negativity than the system which dictates the prices. I don't think most people will ever realize the power of the boycott. People are too self serving to fight these leaches. Let the Rolling Stones fanbase buy up all these over priced tickets and bring their corporate vibes to a Dead show. If you really want to see them in a chill environment, go to Rothbury. As far as being on the View. Words can't even express how lame that is. Maybe Oprah next week? How 'bout American Idol? Jerry, I'm sorry.

I think The Dead had a great idea... make tickets just expensive enough to keep the little snot-nosed wookies out! Why do you whiners think the band owes you something? And save the talk about what great and loyal fans you are, and have been over the years. Talk about BS! If that was the case, you would agree that a night with the band is worth more than a bag of weed, and I know you didn't boycott your dealer when bags went from $35 to $100! So why bitch now? Knowing wookies though, you’ll just crash the gates and ruin the scene... just like the 90's.

seriously if you dont like it do something about it... BOYCOTT.. dont bitch on internet. and personally why the fuck shouldnt they charge this much?... if tickets were 30 bucks; every show would sell out, ticketbastard would take an even higher "service charge", tickets would be near impossible to obtain, and scalpers and brokers would be charging the 100 bucks. All the while you assholes would be coming on jambase to tell everyone how the dead has screwed you over by not mailordering, or that ticketmaster sucks and its the deads fault. (much like the phish/LN/TM fiasco) SO INSTEAD OF BITCHING ON THE INTERNET, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! actions speak louder than words, but then again you would have to put down the pipe and step away from your cpu.

my main point is this: the dead doesnt owe you/us anything. they dont even have to be on tour. they could never tour again. so if you want to see them: pay the price. just like phish tour. if you wanna see them your gonna have to pay the price. if you get lucky as some have in the lotteries than you get lucky and dont have to pay over face. i would bet 40-50% of people at phish shows this year will have paid over face. youre not special and they dont owe anyone anything. if you offered a service and it was in demand you would charge somewhere between your profit line and what people would pay... obviously they think thats about 50-100 bucks. yes i said 50. because 50 dollars can get you in the door. so stop bitching and smile for a change.

Grateful Dank- You are totally correct in your assesment of the economic factors behind the ticket pricing. I think maybe what most people are frustrated about, is the tarnished image of what The Grateful Dead was all about. It obviously came from such a Head culture. This '09 version of them, is just a shell of what it used to be, and attracting the Doctors Lawyers, and "The View" crowd just seems to piss on their integrity. Do they owe any body any thing? I guess that depends on "owe". Why would they want to alienate their long time fanbase? I only say this out of love and respect for The Grateful Dead. Just an opinion. All and all they are a positive force, which is why this leaves alot of us scratching our heads.

The ticket price is $275 starting bid for two tickets not one at the knick. I'm curious what these will sell for all of us who would want to bid are dealt are hand with the pre sale fiasco tickets or mail order. They should have had the auction a long time ago. I was upset at first about ticket price but I figure this is something to complain about after the shows if I dont have a big smile on my face. Anyway its only money and it can't buy you happiness or can it?

Who the hell is the View crowd? I don't know if you realize this, but the boys are no spring chickens. They're right squarely in that View age demographic. And you know who else is? A lot of their fucking fans from their heyday. Go to an Allman Bros. show and you can bet your ass you'll see a lot of gray-haired older folk who'd been into them a lot longer than you have. I realize that and I think it's pretty goddamn cool that old heads are still into good music and rockin' times. I certainly don't think I have the right to think a band that started 20 years before I was even born owes me more than it does the people that followed them from day one.

I don't have any inside information, but I'm pretty sure the boys never meant for their fanbase to be as exclusive as some of you dummies are trying to make it. Quit your belly-aching.

Pimpmcgeorge, By "The View Crowd" I was not intending that to refer to age at all. I am well aware of the time period that the Dead and the Allmans came from. I actually prefer to be at shows with older Heads, which is why I was ripping "The View Crowd" which in my "view" is the polar opposite of the Head Scene. I hope you go to the show, and have the best live show experience ever. I was just commenting on what I percieve to be the tarnishment of their legacy.

Yo - I paid $106 for a third row center ticket on the 1993 tour......I was 20 years old, had no job but found a way to pay....It was worth it. How is everyone so amazed at these ticket prices???? Last time I checked a typical concert ticket is about $50. Those typical bands play about half the amount of time the Dead plays....Too bad the Chicago fans are not boycotting the show.....if they were I would have been able to get better tix. Last night I paid $25 to see Karl Denson's Tiny Universe. Karl Denson is one of my favorite artists.....I have seen him over 40 times in the past 10 years.....but there is a big difference between KDTU and the Dead. I have no problem with the cost of the Dead tix. Maybe the prices will keep away the idiot kids that only want to go so they can get wasted and prove that they can not handle the scene.

Oh yeah and about this money problem, if you've read Phil's book which did come out in 05, their seemed to always be money problems, mostly cause they had horrible MGMT, but the fact that they do still tour on their own which they do make money off of, also all the music albums including their live discs they sell, and how bout all the merchandising you can handle from not just t-shirts, but to fuckin door-stoppers, to say that they aren't making enough money to sell tix for this much is wrong. They took Archive.org because they needed money too, so now they boost their prices for tix cause they need MORE money. MONEY, MONEY, MONEY! That's what it's down to, not the MUSIC. I spent $30 for my last Dead show on Jerry's BDAY in 2004, and to make me pay more than twice that is appauling. As I said, I LOVE GRATEFUL DEAD FOR LIFE, BUT FUCK THE DEAD!

Are you fucken kidding me?????????? I Love the grateful dead as long as I can remember but little by little the dead is becoming DEAD! What’s the deal with the music scene that has once held such a rare place in society? It seems that the artists, who once just loved to play music, have become more money hungry than the "mainstream" artists that you will hear on the radio, song after song. It sucks and it’s a disappointment that all that was once true has become nothing but false hopes and dreams. It’s time THE DEAD asks themselves is this WHAT JERRY WOULD OF WANTED?

The Brooklynite is correct, I agree that the dead aren't making tons but they are also charging insane prices for what we all gotta agree is a nostalgia act (i mean at least 90-95 percent). We have Phish tour with all the LIVING ORIGINAL members charging 49.50 (with the motherf ing companies taking another 13). I don't begrudge them I will just choose not to go to the shows. The fact that the dead tried to say this was sticking it to the scalpers definitely borders on insulting. And donaface you are a complete and utter douchebag for your comments, I think you disgrace deadheads everywhere. Though I'm not into your "synthetic chemicals" or "playing with crystals," I am a young adult that enjoys their music and has gone to great lengths to see them on their last tour (flew from BWI to seattle for the gorge show w/allmans). And I frankly find it insulting that you would say that the band would rather see some people "all grown up now and have jobs where they make 50,000 a year or more." Because you are proving how the whole "Dead" thing is about money now ...which makes me think either I don't get the whole "Dead" thing or you don't (and I really hope this music is more than about having money and being old).

I can only imagine what it will be like when they are gone....all the complainers will turn their hate more towards phish, which is something that many so called deadheads never even gave a chance. While i agree that going on the view is quite lame, give the dead the respect they deserve. If you feel it is too expensive then just stay home and download the shows for free on etree. Yes, Jerry was a great guitar player, the band wouldn't have been the same with out him and he may be the main they came to fame but,

How can so many people still believe that he was more ENLIGHTENED then the other members?

He died of a drug overdose people, I don't see that as being very enlightened.

No disrespect, RIP Jerry and I'm sure he would agree with me from beyond the grave that he was not some kind of Buddha or somthing, he was merely able to summon the gods with his guitar.

Have any of you given any consideration to the actual members of the extended GD family who have been working with them for the past 45 years, working the sound, the lights, etc. If I remember back in 95 when the GD last toured the tickets were probably in the $40-$45 dollar range, since then gas prices have doubled, along with flights, hotels, etc. Do you think the big venue's charge the same fee as they did back then? Around that time I remember paying $15-$20 for a club show, now it's $40-$60. So to me $100 ( as surprising as it seems) is right in line. I have no problem with these making earning a buck, God knows they've earned the right to. Or perhaps you think they should do a tour of the countriessubway stations and beg for donations. I'm truly sorry some of you won't be able to afford it, life's not fair. For those of you not busten your humps to get by, maybe you should apply a gas surcharge to your veggie burrito's and grilled cheeses or maybe speak with your parents to see if they really can afford for you to catch the whole tour.

p.s. I got my mail order tickets from the dead yesterday and got 6th row center on the stage. I've been going to concerts for twenty years and the dead's ticket service has consistantly gotten been decent seats (sometimes great). How many other bands can say the samething.

I am amazed by some of the comments. I think MYMasterpiece says it best, it is called inflation!! $100 to go hear music that we all love, is cheap compared to other so-called "big-time acts." If you take a moment to realize, this may be the last time, that the closest thing to the real thing is going to be together!! If you do not think that they are hurting the scalpers, go to ebay, stubhub or any other ticket seller and look at the OUTRAGEOUS prices they are trying to sell them at!!! $500, $600, $700 for 1 ticket, now that is highway robbery!!! If you think that they do not deserve to make money, then I suggest you go to your boss and tell him you would like to work for nothing!!!!

The comments about rothbury I find incredibly funny!!! How much are you paying to camp and see music for 4 days, $800, $1,000, $1500 per PERSON!! Now that is a joke!!! And you complain about $100? That is less than a weeks worth of groceries for a family of 2!!!

Why such negativity? Embrace the moment and enjoy the music. Sure, It is different than before, but isn't that what its all about, never being the same thing over and over? I am looking forward to the shows, as I think most of us who have tickets are.
