Well, here we go again. It's hard to understand why people feel it's necessary to rip on bands on a public forum. Do you have nothing better to do with your time? If you don't like Hookah, that's cool. I can guarantee you there are more people out there that don't like whatever your favorite band is (The Dead? Phish?), than do like them. Hell, more people don't like the Beatles than do. Do you really think you can possibly be superior because of the music you like? That's like some snotty old dude who loves Beethovan and looks down on you because you don't. I bet you love people like that. Look in the mirror buddy, cause that's you. Obviously this article is not meant to sway you to go to the show, it's to make fans of Hookah (of which there are many both in and out of Ohio) aware that it's going on. It's really sad that people try to convince people to not like a band. If you understood music at all, you'd know that people like all different sorts of things, and it's only about what each individual finds pleasing. I'm sure that JamBase would agree that their posts and articals are not meant to become forums where people put down bands and people's taste in music. It's a shame that some use it for just that purpose.

For those who are into it, can't wait for this show! I'm sure it will be an amazing time.

Why can't there be two sides to the argument? Why do you feel it only has to be commented on by people who support or like an artist? If these people comment negatively about an artist you don't care for, do you post this same defense? I think these forums are great in that they allow for more than one viewpoint. While I may not think that a "they suck!" comment is enough of an assessment of a band and there should be more to their opinion than that, but this is a place for them to air that feeling. As for Hookah, I lived in Ohio for a very long time and saw them dozens of times. I worked for them at their merch booth at each Hookahville, am good friends with their old sound engineer, and still keep in touch with a lot of the Hookah family. I liked some of their songs, but not all of them. I wasn't a fan of the Ed era at all due to Ed's singing and writing style, but rather enjoyed the original Mullins era. I've since moved from Ohio and haven't seen them since with the return of Mullins although they've come nearby. For me personally they've maxed out and I've seen what they can do and I've not seen them push forward with anything new in a while. I'm sure there are some more in tune with the scene that would disagree. However, I recognize their talent, Sweeney can still rip it, Cliff is still kooky and funky, but the rest doesn't really hit me like it used to. Anyway, just let people comment how they feel and don't try to police them too much or get yourself in a twist over a different opinion. Hopefully more and more actual discussions could take place over more intricate pieces of an artist rather than a "They suck!" or "They rock!".

i don't understand how anybody can hear sweeney play and not like this band. hes got to be one of the most soulful guitarists around. just listen to the track above and try to deny it. for some reason this band gets ripped a lot, but this band is great. btw BIGDOOBIE get a life.

I guess I just don't see the point in going to a place like this to even have an argument. Of course there are 2 sides to every argument, but they are asking for comments on an article. To me, just posting to rile feathers is counter productive to anything. I guess we just feel differently about it.

To answer your question. If there is an article about a band I don't like, I don't usually read it, and if I do, i don't usually comment on it. If I did comment, it would never be a comment that bashes the band or it's fans, and certainly wouldn't be in as poor taste as the comments above. And, yes, I would post the same type of response to anyone who slams bands in that manner, even if it's about a band that I don't like.

I guess my main point is, while there are definitely 2 sides to every argument, what exactly is the argument here. The article is not discussing whether or not Hookah is good, or if they jam, or if they have good songs, or anything like that. The article is simply talking about upcoming shows that the band is playing. There is no argument there, it is fact. Maybe with a different type of article I could see where a discussion about what you think of the band would be warranted, but here it is just people trying to dog on a band for no apparent reason.

Definitely get a Schwa, should be a lot of fun. Yeah the reason people like to bash bands on this forum is because they have nothing better to do with their time, and it makes them feel like their opinion matters, which it doesn't.

Hoooookkkaahhh! Yeah, I do wish they got out of the Midwest more often, but that's not the lifestyle they want to lead, so I respect that. They've been playing together for damn near 20 years and they want to keep doing what they're doing without completely burning out from the road. I try to catch 'em every time I get back to Ohio. It's usually always worth it. They still put on a great show. The new material is lagging, but it pops up now and again.

another prime example of what hookah does for their fans. you can't find any other band that tours around ohio and bordering states and plays in your backyard. these guys are down to earth people and do anything for their fans. you would never expect phish/dead/moe./etc to put on a show like this. it takes a unique band to do something like this for their fans. i'm blessed to live in ohio and have experienced this type of appreciation. keep on doin what your doin guys! and long live the SCWHAAAA!

I don't care who likes or doesn't like this band- to each his own....but anyone who thinks there are more people who don't like the BEATLES than do... re: about 15 comments up. You should have you're jambase ID permantly revoked.... even if u did join only last month. Maybe the single most retarded junior league comment ever posted in the history of postings. GD and Phish ARE my two favorite bands, but the Beatles are w/out question the most revered, intelligent, and diverse bands in the history of modern music. I dare to imagine a world that exists w/out their contribution to humanity....

they must be doing something right because after 17or 18 years of playing music together they are still here.not too many bands out there that are independent, handle almost every aspect on their own do their own fest 2 times a year and have fun doing what they do.have some respect for this band even if u don't dig them,9 out of 10 businesses fail in the first year but yet they are still here they do things their own way, they call it paying dues, enjoy

Hookah stays closer to home these days, but when I lived in MD until 07 I had some great times seeing them in Baltimore/FallsChurchVA/festivals and had a lot of friends that were fans. They drew good crowds. I've seen them several times since moving to OH and they're still good but I have to say I liked the lineup w/Ed & Johnny better. Oh well, One Under (their new band) plays here a lot and the best songs were always Dave's (Schwa, SDTL, Loner, Keepin'Time, Indica&Sativa, Deal With It, etc. etc. etc.). I want to see how much the Dream Show resembles mine-wish I could make this one.

now that ed is gone.. their stock has risen in my view. dave cliff and sweeny are the shit... i can understand not enjoying daves vocals too much and thats about 95% of their material but most of cliffs vocals are "fun". while they may be sloppy they are energetic and emotional. just find a good live version of "isis". long live hookah.

I like the idea of 20 songs picked by the fans, but who is picking the actual setlist order?? I guess we know what Ed does with his free time now.... logs into jambase with random usernames and bashes the band that gave him any kind of name in any music.... good job Ed! You will always be one under in my book. See you at the ville!

not sure why jambase put up something from 2004,this is not a good clip anyhow.put up something from 2009 they are so much tighter vocally and all around.this is not even the correct lineup

I believe i know how they are going to choose the 20....earlier in the year they played a (free) show where before the show patrons wrote down 5 songs they thought hookah would play...the first 200 that had their 5 songs played got a free tshirt or something....i bet they just take the top 20 songs wrote down....however, about the show, if you have never been to athens (and if you know hookah your probably from ohio and HAVE been to athens) you should definitely go because its an awesome town with good people and the hills will come alive!

ohmymy Mon 3/23/2009 05:48PM

here is how the 20 songs were compiled:

I have a fun idea! I would like everybody to pm me with a list of their 5 all time favorite Hookah songs. I will keep track and create a Hookah "Dream Show" out of the top vote getters. Two full sets, with an encore.

I'll give it a few weeks until I post the show, and then maybe somewhere down the line, Dave and the Boys can take it and play it live for us! A special "Dream Show".

The tally was then given to the band and the have agreed to play the songs all in one night. The order of the songs seems to remain a mystery as to whether they will play them 20 to 1 or mix it up.

Personally, i find it refreshing that a band would take the time to listen to their fans and do something like this. Kudos to you Hookah!

hey gregboyer, intersting note about one under, apparently their keyboardist left the band to tour with some semi-famous sort of poppy guy, i forget his name, pretty good singer/songwriter but not very jammy, anyway keybaordist quit right before one under's new years eve show at sloopy's, one under had to cancel and what do you know, the keyboardist and the new guy he plays with ends up opening for hookah at the newport NYE. def some bad tensions between ed and dave. as for one under, they have some really good musicians, but being a fan of hookah with ed, the energy just isn't there.

thats right, the clip above isn't even the correct line up. i have seen a couple sloppy shows when mullins rejoined and when ed was about to leave, but everything i've seen the last couple years especially this last newport show has been amazingly tight. expect the dream show to include loner, under full sail, mississippi steam boat, slipjig, vipers drag.... sorry for all the posts but i really do love this band.

funkyMOFO. You are absolutely right. The Beatles are the biggest and most revered band in the history of rock-n-roll. Not to mention that they probably contributed more to modern day music than any other single artist or band (some could argue against that). But, out of perhaps billions of music fans in the world, I guarantee you that more people don't care for them than do. You need to look at a bigger picture than just the jamband scene. There's a lot more music out there, and believe it or not, not everyone is a fan of rock music, including the Beatles. Sorry if you feel you have to refer to my post as retarded. You are obviously more mature and better informed person than I. Will you please not revoke my posting privileges? I humbly ask for your forgiveness and acceptance, and I will do my best to graduate into your "senior league" of posting.
