Smashing PumpkinsJimmy Chamberlin Leaves

A Lonely Gourd
Smashing Pumpkins guitarist, singer, songwriter and founding member Billy Corgan has announced that drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has left the group. Chamberlin joined the band Corgan founded in Chicago in 1988 and played on all their albums except Adore (1998). Corgan, the sole remaining original member, will continue to write and record as Smashing Pumpkins with plans to head into the studio this spring.

A stray snippet from happier times in the Pumpkin patch.

And he's still touring under the Smashing Pumpkins!

At least show some respect and make it singular, since there is only ONE of you!

There's some sort of Guns N Roses joke here, I just can't seem to find it right now. Hopefully Chameberlin will put out another solo disc. I was never a pumpkins fan, but the James Iha & the Jimmy Chamberlin "solo" albums were great. Way better than anything the pumpkins ever released.

Billy must be some tight-ass perfectionist, cause Chamberlin was a fastastic drummer. Now I'm glad I didn't waste money and time on this last reunion tour. The original members were just as important as Corgan's songwriting and singing. Whatever...Just add them to the list of Sublime and Blind Melon...granted they're not horrible, but change the fuckin name at least...

"FANTASTIC DRUMMER" is what I meant, not Fastastic, which is still an interesting combination of a word...

to all the haters, no matter what you say, it doesn't change what a prolific songwriter/musician billy corgan is. whether he is considered a dick or not, he is a genius.

burntownballer and jet19rule, you're both wrong.

this would be like if trey went on to call his next band phish... Trey, like Billy Boredom here is the main driving force behind (what used to be) smashing pumpkins.

trey has written the most material for phish of all four members... god i feel like a douche, i just corrected people on whats the best possible analogy comparing phish to smashing pumpkins...

how about this...

phish > smashing pumpkins ...

thats what i meant to say...

Nice. Now Billy Corgan can hook up with Axl Rose and form a new band ....

GUNS 'N PUMPKINS ..... Comprised of 2 pathetic egotists who live like leeches on the names of once great groups .....

If you like old school acoustic Smashing Pumpkins try this gem from from Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit...

Mayonaise, Drown, Today, Cherub Rock, 1979, Tonight, Zero are all great effing songs.

All you people hating on SP must not have heard their first four albums. They are fantastic. Yes, Corgan is a notorious prick. But, you don't know the circumstances surrounding Chamberlain leaving either. He was/is a hard core junkie and I don't know any way that could function properly with the demands of a band. I don't personally like any of their post Mellon Collie music, but they were a great band, and Corgan is a phenominal, original songwriter.

From what I've heard Corgan was the only one to write and play any guitars on all of their albums...

Is that true? If it's the case it was certainly appropriate to keep the name while it was just him and Jimmy and not too much of a stretch now. He IS the Smashing Pumpkins.

did anyone watch the video of the acoustic Cherub Rock? Its really awesome. But ya I agree with everything on here, Corgan is an assclown. Stephen Lynch does a pretty good impression, check it out.

WharfRat, differing sets from the Pumpkins?... WHAT!?? That's what you get for going on a three-night Pumpkins tour. One show would've been the sweet shit.

wharf rat, here is where you are wrong. the last pumpkins tour was the 20th anniversary tour with 2 dates in each city, each two nights featuring 2 different setlists. so if you saw three, it would mean 2 of the same and one entirely different. i saw both nights in DC and it was incredible, one of the best rock shows i have seen in a long long time. chamberlain was off the walls, bummer that he and corgan can't get along.

oceanside, it is true that corgan wrote and played the music. i read somewhere that it would take d'arcy 4-5 takes what he could put down in 1. chamberlain still did the drums though. corgan is an unreal guitar player.

also, the band he has now is great. ginger reyes is a solid bass player and his other guitarist jeff schroder is just as good as iha is/was. the most recent tour even saw ravi shankar's niece on a violin of which there are only 2 types in the world (some odd, double necked violin).

all of this praise withstanding, corgan is a sellout hypocrite when it comes to band politics, but that doesnt mean the music is any less rockin.

agree with skatanic, it was announced that there would be too different setlists for the tour, white cross and black something or other were supposed to be the names i guess...

i saw one of the chicago theater shows and while i would have loved to see their apparently very psych'd out, noisy version of 'set the controls for the heart of the sun,' i missed that, but my favorite parts of that concert were the more mellow orchestrated parts when they had the extra musicians with horns and (as said) that weird double violin...rrreally cool.

i've never been a huge smashing pumpkins fan and last fall was my only time seeing 'them,' but i know billy always puts out interesting music even if he is pretty....weird.

Billy is one of the best lyricist and guitar players of the "Grunge Era"

But he did "date" Courtney Love and you know what you get when you combine those two elements.

I always thought when Billy Corgan got older his voice would change and he might change his name to Bill or even William.
