Phish :: 03.08.09 :: Hampton Coliseum :: Hampton, VA

Phish :: 03.08 :: Hampton, VA
For as long as I can remember, I've always felt that Phish thrived in three-night runs more so than any other two or four-nighter they could muster. Worcester, MSG, Deer Creek — you name it — three nights always led to epic results. With three shows there's enough time to let ideas and themes evolve with no need to stuff something into a single night or two, while also not allowing the inevitable jetlag and obscene exhaustion of four consecutive nights of fireball rock & roll to take hold.

Hampton '09 proved, yet again, that this band can deliver the goods in every way possible in a short (yet "my god it can seem long") 72-hour time span. After Night Two's second set (read the review here), in which the band seemed to finally get their bearings and loosen up for REAL, Night Three — the sleeper on everyone's radar — stole the show. Sunday night at Hampton will be the most talked about show of this run.

Keeping up with the "anything goes" theme of the weekend, the band busted out the rare "Sanity," with Trey placing a huge emphasis on the line, "I lost my mind just a couple of times," adding, "Yes, I did!" in a demonic voice - clearly referencing his hiatus run-ins with the law. "Wilson" pumped the crowd up and asked for its best call and response, while "Foam" showed that the band really had practiced over the past months, nailing some very tough composed parts.

Trey :: 03.08 :: Hampton, VA
A roaring "Bathtub Gin" again showcased McConnell sprinkling his ivory and blasting out into orbit before the band debuted "Undermind," which featured such lines as, "Relocated, not retired." A very welcome "My Friend, My Friend" had people flipping and swinging from the rafters, while the band continued playing towards their third straight, two-hour first set.

A blistering "Maze" saw a razor-sharp Trey deliver big time, and led to the first moment all weekend I felt the rust had been shaken off. With two-plus shows under their belt, they just needed a little time to warm up before hitting their full, collective stride. George Jones' "She Thinks I Still Care" scratched Gordon's bluegrass itch, while "Army of One" was beautiful and really showed McConnell is as confident as ever in his voice.

The first set closed with a huge combo of the dankalicious "Tube," "Cars Trucks Buses," the almighty, triumphant return of "Free" that saw the entire arena fist-pumping and exclaiming, "I feel the feeling I forgot!" and "Frankenstein," which found McConnell on the Keytar (half piano, half guitar), instead of his normal Moog/synths. Another monstrous first set that was well received, well played and drew from the band's entire catalog.

Set Two bubbled up with "Down With Disease" and gave us the most exploratory jam of the run - winding, snaking and moving with reckless abandon, it was impressive to say he least. A mid set "Horse > Silent in the Morning" was a nice treat that allowed us to catch our breath, while the meat of the night followed with a funky "Twist" that got bodies gyrating.

It wasn't long until the band finally played what we were waiting for - "2001." A tune that blasted me off in this very room ten years ago, this version was awesome and featured some great work by Chris Kuroda on lights — who was stellar all weekend. "Moma Dance" followed and was so funky and gooey that I felt like those people in the library when they get smothered by Slimer from Ghostbusters.

Phish :: 03.08 :: Hampton, VA
A nice treat of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was better conceived than executed, but hey, it didn't matter — this night was a CELEBRATION, much more than the funeral of Coventry (read the Coventry review here). Phish was — no, *IS* — back and over the course of three nights in The Mothership they reclaimed their rightful place as Kings in our world of jam. The playing was very, very good; there were some flubs, but the overall effort and obvious preparation the four horsemen put forth was the most positive sign of all.

However, my musical highlight was the set closing "Slave to the Traffic Light." Admittedly, my favorite Phish tune, this version was soaring, climactic and full of raw, delicate energy that almost had me in tears due to the fact that I couldn't believe how much I've missed this band. Judging by the looks of those around me, I am sure most everyone agreed.

The encore featured some goofy Phish with Trey leading the entire crowd through "Happy Birthday" to Leonard Fishman, Jon's dad, before a funky "Contact," which gave Page one more chance to funk things out on his Clavinet, Moogs and all those other keys he's surrounded by. "Bug" was welcomed and had me feeling like it was '99 all over again. The final portion of the tension and release I mentioned in Friday's review (read it here) came full circle with a RAGING "Tweezer Reprise" that literally had the place about to explode, and capped off an insane set that put an exclamation point on the show of the weekend.

Phish :: 03.08 :: Hampton, VA
In conclusion, it is safe to say the band delivered. The shows were solid, well thought out and full of surprises. Phish looked — and more importantly, sounded — great and was genuinely happy to be back, something that I'm not sure was the case during the post-hiatus years. McConnell was the MVPage of the weekend, absolutely stealing almost every tune he touched. Gordon was as solid as ever and along with Fish, held down the low end, while Trey gained confidence with each passing night, saving some fierce playing for Sunday. I, for one, "feel the pheeling I forgot," and have the burning in my calves I have only ever felt at a Phish Show, where I have danced my butt off like there's no emails, work to do or a care in the world. Summer tour is going to be nuts, and it will give all of those who couldn't make this trek the chance to swallow the magic pill for themselves and travel to the wonderful world of Phish, where anything is possible. Huge kudos to the band for being more ready than most of the fans were and absolutely delivering the goods — in a big way. Move over everybody else, The Boys are back and Hampton was the first statement in the next chapter of one of the greatest careers in rock history.

Sunday show was on a whole new level. Very well written reviews.

My favorite audience moment on Sunday night happened when the giant balloons were falling from the ceiling. One of the balloons that was right above all the recording equipment and tapers started to fall, and you could see 20 tapers/soundmen just looking up with "oh shit" expressions on their faces at this giant balloon that was about to hit all their microphones. At which point, they all flew into the crowd behind them to reach up and tear the balloon to shreds. Nice team work guys! thanks for saving the recordings and thanks to the crew for the incredible sound!

From the Associated Press:

Police seize more than $1 million from Phish fans

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) -- Some Phish fans are leaving Hampton a little lighter than when they arrived for the band's weekend reunion.

Police said Monday they confiscated about $1.2 million in illegal drugs and more than $68,000 in cash from concertgoers. Authorities also arrested 194 Phish fans during the three-night celebration of the band's return to the stage after a nearly five-year absence.

Most of the arrests were for drug possession, use and distribution, police said.

Tourism officials had estimated 75,000 fans would be coming to the coastal Virginia city. Nearly 200 law enforcement officers worked the weekend event, with the Vermont-based band picking up the tab.

keenan41... Your comment as to less posts I think has to do with satisfaction and satiation. The mounds of posts to anything phish came out of ravenous desire for the music. So the beast is fed a bit and knows there is more food on the horizon. Those who were not at the show really were at the show in a way with technology and tuning in. For Phish fans I'm sure all is right in the world... I was at Saturday night and the energy was moving. I'm a music fan not so much a Phish fan and thought they played great and that from a perspective of only knowing a few melodies and a couple of songs. Major Skills and momentum from both crowd and band. I felt fortunate to the experience . Hampton Coll is an amazing venue; there is just something about the place

Umm, that Sanity was actually played for me. I lost my mind a couple of time Saturday night, Trey and Page saw/felt me do it too-huge eye contact with them both, my ear to ear grin said it all and was passed around by the 3 of us. Perfect double opener Sunday. That Velvet Sea pretty much closed the book on Coventry, Page just large and in charge all 3 nights. Frankly true democracy this weekend, 3.0 is all about doing the right things right, I see this lasting a long time unless the fans shady behavior kills it. Way to many arrests and the quantity of money/drugs siezed is an absolute embarassment. Will they play Hampton next as "Space Antelope" or "Fishman and Friends", I fear a ban coming from city hall (hey, at least no deaths reported!). Nonetheless, the hotels and cabbie's freaking loved us all-nothing but good vibes from the service industry. Man the Hampton economy needed this bad.

This is the best article I have read about the shows yet, though I wish there was less focus on how "perfect" Trey played or did not play. Just being in that room surrounded by so much awe and wonder, who cares about a flubbed note here and there. I've never heard a perfect Phish performance whether it was 86, 96 or 2009. It's not like the studio where you can punch in and dub over your mistakes. Live, you get one shot, and they phrickin NAILED IT. THANK YOU PHISH for such an amazing weekend. (Went to all three, scored 3-day passes for face value on Ticketmaster).

Kudos to the band and to the phans! Stellar weekend, good job getting covering the shows jambase! I agree that Page deserves the prize - KILLER.

As for the scene and cops shaking people down, tourfan - it's a gamble out there, and I felt like they compromised pretty well with us. Two hundred cops and 194 arrests=1 arrest per cop, and compared with scores of thousands of fans getting phreaky? Besides, these guys haven't toured in 4.5 years - if you've been stockpiling drugs to sell for that long, don't bring them ALL to the first three shows!?!?

Big props to the people of Hampton and the surrounding area for really treating us so well. I was just amazed by how nice everyone acted! Not only do we get to play and THROW DOWN hard at an amazing venue and pretty much self-govern (nobody clearing the aisles, plenty of time to hang out after the show), but we were greeted with smiles at bars and restaurants, and welcome signs at the Best Western hotel - even though I had to drive to Norfolk, we had a blast raging on the beach til sunrise. I've been hitting up shows since May 5, 1990 at Dominguez Hills, and phish in April of 1992 at LA Variety Arts - and this was an epic phamily reunion. . . thanks all!

totally unbelievable show. i cried 30 seconds into wilson, i wasn't the only one, right? page def owned hampton,but the boys sounded great too. 194 arrests? i barely noticed security, escept that the guard 10 feet to my right was wicked cool. oh, and on the way out 5 or 6 "policemen" and one second class petty officer from the coast guard were harrassing and baiting phans, oh and that poor cop struggling mightily to handcuff that bare assed cat in the bushes. seriously,d**k in the dirt, spread eagle naked: hilarious and disgusting all at once. great show, great time, great article.

I am surprized @ that # of arrests. Being there for the Sunday show, I was warned @ how "bad" the cops were. However I thought it to be VERY laxed. Walking around with open beers all over the place, and all through Shakedown. Passed cops with a joint burning in one hand and a beer in another. Looked @ me but said nothing. They seemed more interested in busting peps that wern't using the port o potties. I wonder if the majority of arrests came on days 1 & 2, they got their quota, and chilled out on Sunday? As for the show....COME ON! They are truely back. What a 1st set, 'eh? 16 songs....over 2 hours. Geezus! After that maze, I thought that was it. they were gonna end it there, but nooooo, like what, 6 more songs after that? Really f'n awesome show. I had no expections for what they provided me/us on Sunday. Thank you Phish! Welcome Back!

Danalog....read the article!!!! Does it seem legitimate to you?? Seriously. Do you really think Trey would be quoted saying something like that? It made me laugh. Does any one recognize that there were something like 20,000 extra people in the lot.....that is why there were so many arrests. If you were there, and you had half of a brain, you could do what you want. The Norva, however, were a bunch of assholes.

There were not so many arrests comparatively speaking. The number was far greater in the 90's when they played Hampton prior. The whole issue of so-called bootlegged merchandise was a smoke and mirrors from the management and attorneys. I wrote jambase to see if they would attempt to speak to it. It is actually pretty shrewd . It gave the pretense that the band was going to be more about establishment by cutting the shakedown street but in fact it created safe passage to those who had tickets. To the heads who did not who were dealing they were fair game. I don't like to see anyone get busted but there were no issues inside the venue that I saw. However, Corin Capshaw owns the world of music and its his backyard or the Virginia. Phish is not really responsible for any of it. They have this management so they don't have to deal with anything but the music. The days of the moving city may be gone and that makes me sad because everyone who came could still be a part of the event but the bands reputation is important so that it can play and that is the most important thing PEACE

permit conditions often require the band to hire extra cops...get over it kids...if you can't keep your shit together then you should go to jail and learn a lesson before you kill yourself or someone else.
