First Album: Harley Prechtel-Cortez of Red Cortez

I first bought two records at the same place: Sam Goody at the Hawthorne Mall in Hawthorne. That place holds memories even though it is now just an abandoned building.

When I was about eight-years-old my older brother and I had both put in money we had collected to get The Joshua Tree by U2 on cassette. It had been out for a year or two by then and I remember we listened to it the day we got it over and over and we would ALWAYS sleep to it. The radio was near the top bunk bed...

I also bought The La's record in 1990 at that same Sam Goody at The Hawthorne Mall. I think I was in sixth grade. Everyone always loved "There She Goes" off that record (which is why I originally bought it), but friends would come over and ask who The La's were, thinking it was a hip-hop record, because that's what most of my friends listened to (well that and Depeche Mode).

Believe it or not I still have that La's cassette tape.

Red Cortez (formerly The Weather Underground) is on tour now with Morrissey, dates available here.

Some would say that is from before U2 sucked. Others might say it sucks retroactively as punishment for everything else they made afterwards. Still others will claim to enjoy actually eating feces. It's a strange world.

Am I just out of the loop, or should I know who Red Cortez is? Joshua Tree was good, but Achtung baby! was the high water mark for U2.
