House Of Blues Boston by Bruss
Boston's House of Blues is barely one week old, but it is already one of the best concert venues in Beantown. The city hosts a handful of smaller nightclubs such as the Paradise Rock Club and Middle East Downstairs, while TD BankNorth Garden and BU's Agganis Arena provide large-scale venues for acts that can reach the masses. But, mid-level venues are what Boston lacks most, so enter the House of Blues.

Built across the street from Fenway Park's Green Monster, the House of Blues takes up the space on Lansdowne Street that was once filled by the semi-posh Avalon Ballroom, as well as Axis, a smaller venue that catered to local acts as well as national artists. When the Lyons Group, owner of the previous venues and current House of Blues landlord, closed those clubs' doors, all that was known was that something new was going to take their place. Eventually, Live Nation decided to fill the space with a new addition to their House of Blues chain, and from that point on, the venue practically rose out of thin air.

Lansdowne Street has long been the unofficial nightclub strip for the college town, and with two of the bigger venues out of action, the past two years have seen the strip much drearier than usual. Acts that used to play at the Avalon found themselves booking The Paradise, and more recently the Wilbur Theatre, but among the city's concertgoers, the absence of a mid-level venue was felt. Fortunately, the House of Blues is filling the Avalon's void, and then some.

By employing roughly 350 people, and potentially entertaining 2425 concert goers, the House of Blues has already made its presence known, and if you live in Boston but haven't caught wind of the opening, odds are you'll find yourself checking out a show in the near future. For the jam-oriented, the Boston branch of the chain will be hosting moe., Umphrey's McGee and The Disco Biscuits in the near future. Indie acts like TV On The Radio and Animal Collective will be performing this spring, and veterans like Tom Jones and Morrissey are already on board to provide some balance to the lineup. But more significantly, Boston's own Dropkick Murphys will be doing their annual St. Paddy's Day run of seven already nearly sold out shows this March. Few venues, if any in the cities history, have had the logistical capacity to cater to such diverse artists, so for the Boston concertgoer, this opening really is exciting.

Thievery Corp :: 02.24 :: HoB by Klise
The Dropkicks used to do their St. Paddy's Day run at the Avalon, and given the venue's primary focus on the clubbing crowd, the interior design always felt a bit off for the occasion, and the overhead disco ball was nothing but a buzzkill. But the House of Blues is all about live music, and the folks behind the construction project paid attention to all of the details that make a venue appeal to both attendees and artists. Multiple dressing rooms provide the talent with a bit more legroom than the backstage area Avalon and Axis once shared. The venue is decorated from top to bottom with an extensive collection of what has been described as "outsider/folk art" that gives the place its own flavor, and the acoustics are on the money.

JamBase gave the House of Blues a spin during a recent Thievery Corporation concert (02.24.09) that was optimal for testing out the venue's capabilities. Between two DJ's, two percussionists, a horn section, a bassist, a sitar/guitar player and about five different singers, Thievery Corporation was sure to push the sound system to the limits. Low and behold, the show was feedback-free, and thanks to a detailed acoustic design (and a damn good sound tech) every instrument was audible, independent of the rest of the band and from every corner of the house.

From the front of the stage to the back of the balcony, the open feel of the room enhances the concert experience by keeping a rather large facility on the intimate side, and this sweetens the deal for folks on both sides of the photo pit. From the crowd, seeing multiple levels of moving bodies added to the experience of an already-killer dance party by making the attendee feel like he was just one wave in an ocean of movers and groovers. And Thievery Corporation seemed to appreciate their unobstructed view of their multi-leveled dance-horde enough to come back to the stage for an unplanned encore following a set that they specifically said knocked Chicago off the "best gig of the tour" spot.

This is not to say the venue is without its problems. Coat check was insufficient, which caused long lines and clogged hallways, and there was a general sense of confusion on the part of the new staff as to who was in charge of what. However, with time, and the opportunity to learn from mistakes, these glitches can work themselves out. The biggest issue the venue faces is their ability to keep costs down. Live Nation is permitting ticket sales through Ticketmaster, avoiding a supposed monopoly on sales (had they sold exclusively through the newly developed Live Nation ticketing service), but with the Department of Justice looking into potential anti-trust concerns over the recently announced Live Nation/Ticketmaster merger, non-competitive, unchecked service charges atop excessive admission fees could be part of the venue's future. Issues of mergers, monopoly and excessive service charges are significant and deserving of attention in their own right, but the venue itself is a concertgoer's dream and that seems to be the product of a company that, in this case, listen to their customers. It may be a rocky road ahead, but the spectacular feat that is the House of Blues rightfully earns some good will on the part of ticketholders, and hopefully the promoters will return that kind favor.

the orpheum has been the main boston venue for mid sized acts for years. not sure why this article completely ignores it. anyway the HOB is probably going to make the orpheum lose most of its acts.

this venue looks sterile and minimal.

not at all comfortable.

been to many venues. and I have never liked any house of blues.

thievery is cool and I would bite the bullet and see them in a HOB, if I had a chance.. for sure.

I'm sorry, but i was at Rothbury and the Chicago shows and I thought the Chi town show was horrible. On the other hand Rothbury went down as one of my alltime favorite shows. I am shocked to hear that thievery themselves thought it was a good show, in my opinion the vocals where off they lacked some serious energy. They even commented about it looking like the place was all dressed up to go to dinner. Also i dont take molly so dont even go there, but i dont think i saw one glow thing the hole night. I would have to say it was one of the crappiest shows i have seen to date. Sorry...

I was there and this show was incredible. The shots they have of the HOB don't really do it justice. They went to show much work with this venue and it really did pay off. That being said this isn't a very good review of the show it's mostly just talking about the venue. This was my first Thievery show and after that I guarantee it won't be my last.

I'm with drbell...no mention of the Orpheum seems absurd as it's truly the most comparable venue to the new HOB. Actually, it's likely the only true comparable venue as the defunct venues didn't have that sort of capacity. Weird. I'm sure the $11 beers will ensue if they haven't already since it's a franchise affair that is in bed with LiveNation / T'master. Ugh. I quite sure I'll trudge there begrudingly like the rest, though, as we have no choice.

Thievery is sickening, I hope to see them at Roth. Also, I agree with stuckinabeat I don't want to read articles that seem to praise the very corporations that rape my wallet when I want to go have a decent musical experience,

Thievery Corp is where it's at! Regarding the whole ticketmaster thing, every show I see I try to avoid ticketmaster but there a MONOPOLY! It's difficult. HOB is cool but it starting to seem like they might be popping up like mcdonalds around the USA.

Nice pics. Venue sounds great... but where's the show review?! Of the best show of tour?! Are you a paid PR rep for House of Blues? That's what it sounded like. More about Thievery & less about HOB.

This venue is horrible. A total disgrace. Really no different then what was there before. 2,500 people for a GA venue. They pack you into every available piece of real estate. The line to get into this place went all the way to the Cask and around Brookline Ave. Not to mention, atleast a half hour to get to a urinal, no room to move and poor sight lines if you're not a tree topper.

this is a mediocre review, if you can consider it a review. yeah you sure told us a bunch about this new HOB but everything you said about thievery corp was related to how they played the venue. and i don't believe that any single venue--especially what is i guess a 'mid-sized' venue like this--would employ 350 people; what, are there like 100 bartenders? i'd like to see some comfirmation on that. plus, that venue looks really boring. and i didn't know that all HOB's had that religious 'all is one' design above the stage, so there's points off for lack of originality.

also i'm calling thievery corp hypocrites for dealing with ticketmaster/livenation. i've been a fan of their music for years, and have never seen them live, so i was heartbroken when tickets for the chicago show cost $50+; $40 face + bullshit fees. i thought this band labeled themselves as socially/politically conscious, but i won't believe that coming from anyone who deals directly with scum like ticketbastard.

plus, only three pictures--and bad pictures--of the two guys who are the foundation of this band? and not a single picture of the complete stage setup (because this is such a big and unique live band)? that's weak. i'm trying not to be negative, especially because this 'review' looks pretty well thought-out and well-written, but this is one of the worse articles i've seen on here recently.

I am baffled just as few of the other posters are...Chicago was the best show of their tour up til then? Must not have been much of a tour...

They started late and ended early in Chicago, there were sound problems, and it was over 50 bucks...

I went to the public opening where J Geils Band played for the first time in some years. I will say that the writer hit the nail on the head, it is a nicer room than the avalon with the updated decor and opened up space. But it feels commercial and the people working there really had no idea what they were doing. I can only imagine what Bisco was like on saturday. Either way its a nice second best venue to the orpheum. With our only other options being the paradise(security and venue kind of suck in my opinion. Some people like the room which isnt to bad sounding but its awkward to move around the place), fleet pavilion (it has its issues) and smaller venues like bills bar and ish, House of Blues is nothing but a plus. Either way i am going to see derek trucks, two nights of moe and umphreys there in april. At this point the tickets are managable, at 32$ after charges.

stuckinabeat - I dont know what show you were at seeing them at Rothbury - but one of the ten dudes on stage (sleepy) I think said to the crowd "you guys are fucking nuts" I remember it like yesterday - and have the livedownload to prove it...All I know if the first 15 or so rows were absolutely on fire and I was left a puddle. That being said - Eric, Rob, and Co. please come west coast, maybe a little SD!!!
