Friday Nov 9th, 2001
BB King's, NYC

On Friday night, Melvin Sparks and Band rolled in to BB's Kings in Times Square to open up the show for The Radiators. This version of Melvin's band is one of my all time favorites featuring organ legend Reuben Wilson, bass extordinaire (from George Benson's Band) Stanley Banks, Joe Hrbek on sax and Tony Mason on drums. With no offense meant to a certain New Orleans band, this was the band that I came to see.

Through the one hour set the band worked their way through such groove classic as "Orange Peel," "Firecracker," and "Funky Good Time." The dance floor got more crowded with every number. I don't think that most in attendance knew what they were in for. The band was especially tight on this night considering that they don't always play together. Then again, these men are not just seasoned veterans, they are Jazz legends. The show ended with an extended cover of the Temptations classic "My Girl" that started with the familiar groove but quickly transformed itself into much more. Then before we knew it, it was set break time.

We here in New York City are no doubt spoiled by the frequency that we get to see such musicians perform. On any given night you might just come upon one of our local treasures.
