Trey Goes Symphonic!

EAST COAST PREMIERE OF NEW COMPOSITION

Anastasio by Rod Snyder
Trey Anastasio will join Music Director Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for orchestrations of classic Phish tunes and the East Coast premiere of his composition "Time Turns Elastic" at 8 pm on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Tickets will be available through a real time pre-sale beginning Thursday, February 19th at 5 pm (EST) and ending Friday, February 27th at Noon (EST) at treytickets.rlc.net Tickets go on-sale to the public Saturday, February 28th at noon (EST). Audio taping tickets will not be sold for this event.

The first half of the program features classic Phish songs and solo Trey compositions, while second half of the program features the East Coast premiere of "Time Turns Elastic," co-composed by Anastasio and long-time collaborator Don Hart. "Time Turns Elastic" is a groundbreaking work for vocals, electric guitar and orchestra with long, orchestral passages intertwined with epic guitar lines and vocals in the vein of such classic Anastasio compositions as "The Divided Sky," "Guyute" and "Fluffhead." With Anastasio's electric guitar at the forefront, "Time Turns Elastic" pushes the limits of orchestral music and delivers a complete articulation of the Baltimore Symphony's mission to present new musical collaborations that challenge and inspire audiences.

"Most of the time when people use an electric instrument with an orchestra, they destroy the capability to blend," notes Anastasio. "Our approach is to handle it as any other solo instrument. I play at the volume of say, an oboe, so Don can orchestrate around the guitar."

Time turns elastic was a cool show, I saw the first (?) one in Nashville. Trey really does blend the guitar well; the way they messed with the volume was awesome. I advise anyone who gets a chance to see it to go! Don't expect any jammin' just the trippiest classical music you've ever heard.

Time Turns Elastic was cool, but I like Lee Johnson and the Russian Symphony Orchestra covering the Dead tunes much better, if we're talkin classical music and jambands...

So much to be pumped about here -- the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is phenomenal and the Meyerhoff is one of the best sounding rooms in the country. What a welcome surprise.

First it's playing symphony music. what's next, after school specials on the dangers of drugs starring Trey? I'm not gonna kiss this guy's ass until he brings back the funk. This better not be a sloppy 2002-2004 Phish. This better be a new beast. a better beast. and for fuck's sake... a funky beast.

Many people also don't know that 2001 isn't even the actual name. It's titled Also Sprach Zarathustra composed by Friedrich Nietzsche between 1883 and 1885. About a hundred years before 2001: A Space Oddesy was made. Just a little classical knowledge for you all.

^^^ 2001 composed by the philosopher Nietzsche? lol. Use some common sense before rushing in to save the day with your "classical knowledge" ie misread wiki article. Richard Strauss composed "Also Sprach Zarathustra."

While mpls is so totally wrong, I do think the piece is based on something nietzche wrote..... in any event, a nice piece of knowledge is that the 2001 we all know and love was actually reworkded by eumir deodato *sp sometime i be;lieve in the 70's or early 80's

The Deodato Arrangement of "Thus Sprach Zarathustra" appears in Peter Sellers last movie 'Being There' which is a great movie BTW. Very well done with lots of modern relevance (hopefully less so these days). The arrangement is based on The Richard Stauss song that was inspired by Fredrick Nietchze's writing on the Ubermensch, or superman.

Simply put, Trey Anastasio is a prolific musician. He literally shits ideas. sure he has had a couple of bouts with the hard stuff... but who hasn't, when you LIVE on tour? Incidentally, the Nashville chamber orchestra, at bonnaroo 2004 with trey, was absolutely beautiful... I would go so far as to say that it was the highlight of that whole fest. I really think that TRUE music fans will enjoy the orchestral stuff... As far as the jumping around... I mean, come on, I love to dance... and who doesn't like to feel good at a show... but in this case, "TWEAKERS BEWARE". It's going to be soulful and pretty... not blinging and poppy... so, cool your engines folks... Trey is coming either way!!! peace and LIGHTS- E.T.
