Phish Talks Ticketing Issues

In a statement on their website, Phish responded today to this weekend's ticketing problems that have been the talk of Jam Nation. The statement reads:

We have heard from many fans regarding this past weekend's onsales, particularly the shows that went on sale via Live Nation's website. Many of you experienced extremely long wait times, error messages, and quite simply, an inability to get through and purchase tickets. Clearly, the system was unable to handle the extraordinary demand. We're very sensitive to making the process of getting Phish tickets as straightforward as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your continued support and patience.

Here's a little "Bathtub Gin" from the upcoming Clifford Ball DVD to soothe the nerves of frustrated, ticketless fans. "Here comes the joker/ We all must laugh/ Because we're all in this together/ And we love to take a bath." Indeed.

Making soup for the ambassadors.... I am glad they know whats up. Too bad for all of you phans who got fucked over. I surely thought I wasn't going to get any but I got a decent amount. Don't pay over face for any of these tickets this tour. Trust me its not worth it.

thanks for realizing it! phish just needs to sell all of the tickets to the shows. live nation started selling tickets Jan 1 2009, clearly they are not prepared for the high demand. It also is real nice to see the tickets on ebay before anyone you know can even get thru to the ticketing section on livenation.com

anyone who buys lawn seats for over face is a fucking tool. I am sorry but we shouldn't pheed the phrenzy and give into those fuckers and especially if you bought tickets from one of those sites before there even on sale.

from craigslist:

SUPPLY AND DEMAND. IF WE REFUSE TO PAY OUTRAGEOUS PRICES FOR TICKETS THEY WILL HAVE TO SELL THEM FOR LESS. PHISH IS NOT TOURING AGAIN SO YOU CAN MAKE MONEY. BUYING MORE TICKETS THAN YOU NEED SO THAT YOU CAN RIP OFF FELLOW PHANS IS DISAPPOINTING. WHAT HAPPENED TO COMMUNITY, RESPECT, LOVE?

Whenever theres a good thing, someone has to ruin it, and this time it just happened to be a bunch of outsiders who decided they could get rich off of our love of phish. No true phan would ever buy tickets for profit, its not the community that is getting fucked, its outsiders fucking our community

DOWN WITH LIVENATION!!!! Livenation not money hungry bastards is to blame for the anger among Phish fans. I do agree that non fans bought up too many tix but patient fans could get tickets to most of the shows they needed. It's sad to say but i actually miss ticketmaster. I did end up getting the tix to the few shows i needed but the whole process was horrible. It is unacceptable for a so called ticket agency to be so poorly run. I would rather pay the extra few dollars in surcharge than waste 2 hours being kicked back the start time and time again. Livenation is not going anywhere but I hope bands like phish will decide to boycott venues that are exclusive to them.

Mrknowitall, don't try to tell me and many others we weren't persistent enough. I had multiple laptops going on both Friday and Saturday, with several friends helping out by calling and refreshing pages for hours, and I didn't get a single ticket. People pulled tickets purely by luck this weekend, so don't act like you think you're better than other people just because you got lucky.

Ok, phish recognizes there's a problem with getting tickets to their shows, and with all due respect to phish, they're the sickess bad going, live. However they need to consider their fans and play bigger venues. Jones Beach, that's smaller than pepsi- albany. Why not SPAC? the fox theatre? 11 shows! I'm not saying tour stadiums, but they can play venues 25,000+, and add some nights, 1 deer creek?

I got shut out completely and it sucks. I feel ya dropacidrain I was tryin all of Saturday to get tix to alpine, calling and online, and by the time I finally got through with someone on the phone they were sold out. I think I've come to grips with the situation but seriously livenation was not prepared at all for this kind of demand for tickets.

Oh and deathtonoobs you should probably not post here anymore you bring the whole community down. Just my 2 cents.

I've seen phish plenty, but it don't matter whether you seen them 100x or 0x, as long as you're there for the music. It helps, but you don't have to see a band to appreciate them. Phish is a very talented band, hence very popular- deal with it.

I understand the frustration with tickets...but you can't blame phish for the tour. There were certain things that had to happen for them to come back. I don't care what these things are if it means they're coming back. The planned this tour on purpose so LEECHes could not be on this tour grimin the place up with their filth. one night of deer creek is because it would be full of them if there was multiple camping. alpine for two days (even though DC is better) is because there is no camping there. The fox theatre is for the band to enjoy an intimate setting again...sucks for most of us but the people who are there will be treated to an EXCELLENT experience. They are taking it slow this first time and feeling things out. Don't worry there will be more tours after this. They are not gonna come out the first tour and run in to the exact same problems that caused two hiatus'. If this is what it takes for the bad....SO BE IT....just happy to have them back. Besides the shows aren't for almost six months...plenty of tickets will appear before then...especially right before the show when all the people who bought them to sell aren't gonna want to eat the price and try to get rid of them...have patience and dedication and you will see them.

Hey,

Wanna explain why phish is playing tiny ass venues? Why are they only playing 1 night in Great Woods (Comcast). That is a disaster waiting to happen.

They should play larger stadiums and be done with it.

I asked a guy on craigslist if he wanted to trade an Alpine or a Knoxville for one of his 5 extra Burgettstown tickets, and he responded with "no need. i have my tix for PA and extras to sell." i have a mansfield pavillion level ticket to trade for an asheville. Long story short is that i had 2 tickets for mansfield in my cart at livenation. I ended up losing those two tickets because no "purchase" button loaded. I tried to update the tickets and lost them. Had one more shot at livenation and it only would let me get one ticket. So i needed 2 for mansfield and only have one. If anyone has an extra mansfield for face or would like to trade an asheville for one mansfiled pavillion please drop me a line. If the Phish organization really cared about scalped tickets then they would put an end to it. Obviously they have the ability to, and yet they let this ridiculousness go on.

As long as they sell all the tix then they don't give a hoot...if they did then maybe you'd be able to see them.

finkle-LEECHes and people, alike, need to camp. I doubt there playing 1 deer creek, so no one can camp, thus weening out the "LEECHes"- there will be people at any concert, there for the wrong reasons no matter the venue, no matter how many shows, no matter the band. (PHISH) + Few shows and small venues is a scalpers' paradise- increase demand-increase profit...Economics 101. At many venues the seats are preowned by stockholders, and they love when phish comes to town. Yeah, I would kill to see phish in a small intimate theatre, but between the few fortunate ones and the stress of the many unfortunate ones...

to those that are saying Phish should sell the tickets themselves... do you realize that they wouldn't be able to play these venues like DC and Alpine, etc... if they sold the tix themselves? Live Nation OWNS THE VENUES AND ALL RIGHTS TO DISTRIBUTE TICKETS HOWEVER THEY WISH. Sure it's called "Verizon Wireless Music Center" because they SPONSOR the venue. So, in order for everyone to be happy, it sounds like Phish should own all these venues they play so they can do ticketing their own way. I was persistent friday and got me 4 DC tix for me and my peeps. ANYWAYS... here's something that might brighten your day: just found this... http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c225/brovich/BROO09.jpg

I'm sorry, but as a longtime Phish fan, someone whose been to many shows and someone whose went to Coventry w/ tix, but still got shut out b/c I wanted nothing to do with hiking 12+ miles with all my gear to see the "last" Phish show ever, these apologies are getting a little tired. Based on the presale demand, and the demand for the Hampton shows, Live Nation and Phish both should have been plenty prepared for this. Am I bitter? Of course, and that doesn't necessarily make my rant appropriate, but I feel like these are issues that Phish and their preferred ticket outlets have had ample time to address, and yet they have not. I mean, this is the long awaited reunion of one of the most successful live musical acts. How is one of the two most successful concert promoters not prepared for this?

The bottom line is, as stated, supply & demand. If these tickets are worth so much to us, then Phish should simply charge more. If anyone should be making money off of our insanity, it's the band, not ticket brokers. So if after five years of desperately waiting you can't shell together a couple hundred bucks to see your favorite band, maybe it's time to get a job hippies ;)

I'm excited to see my 50th show, but all ya'll negative cats can stay at home. The process sucks: Phish wants to play Camden. Camden has contract with LiveNation. LiveNation is the devil. Robert Johnson made deal with the devil. Said fan (Robert Johnson?) wants to see Phish. Fan must buy said ticket from LiveNation. And so on...

If someone wants to see Phish at a great venue for a reasonable price, someone better go Bill Graham on this piece and open up a corporate free venue... but for now, that's the reality.

If the guys really are sorry about what happened, lets see some action on the side of scalpers being caught and having their tickets pulled. The scalping going on is unbelievable, and down right obvious. If they don't try to enforce it now that the fans have been affected, then that clause is a joke. How about a little justice?

Anyone who walked into Conventry should have been guarenteed the right to buy a pair to a show, I beleive. How about the people who didnt get in and had to live with the refund and the autographed book? Didn't they disearve a chance at a ticket more than anyone?

Congrats to all of those who got tickets, but its obvious something shaddy went down here.

^ Sorry, any lineup that has Aphex Twin is fake. I always see them and they are always fake. He hasn't been to the US in years, except for a surprise unannounced visit to Coachella last year. He certainly wouldn't be on a lineup and he certainly wouldn't go to Bonnaroo.

it's amazing that Phish is aware of this and cares enough to post about it themselves. still, the next step is a SOLUTION! Phish Lottery hooked me up, but, even though I'm a southern NY'er, I got shut out of Jones Beach. I thought I could happily try for just one or two shows on the public on-sale, woke up like a good little head at a quarter to ten, and spent over 2 and a half hours hammering with my browser and cordless. not only is there no phone-call queue, but I actually HAD tickets on SEVEN separate occasions, only to run into the "500 Internal Server Error" and lose them each and every time! not cool, livenation.

Dionysis, good shit man. I like what I see so far. Also, buying tickets solely for the purpose of reselling them is ridiculously undude. My buddy did that for The Dead tour and I let him know in no unplain terms how disappointed I was in him.

I understand it was frustrating...It surely was for me...Took me over 2 1/2 hrs to score 2 lawns for Star Lake and Deer Creek, then another 2-3 hrs to score 4 for both nights @Alpine. Persistance paid off, got kicked off multiple times with tix in my basket and may Pavillion tix for alpine are not together but hey, I'm in like flynn...To all those who got shut out, you will be able to get some tix dont worry just bring something to trade and don't fuel the fire by giving in to scalpers I have been seeing these guys since 98 and have NEVER,EVER not gotten into a show I wanted to be in and have absolutely NEVER, EVER, EVER paid over face. No different than The Dead------And again not the band's fault as the promoters and venues set the tone--Not like the good ole days when the bands could give the promoters the finger as it will cost them way too much $$$$$ to settle.

Grass roots bands had the right idea but the industry has now taken the "grass roots" approach as they saw yet another way to soak the fan's for every noickel they can get.

Phish and The Dead are worth every penny if it went to them but most of it will not and it is of no fault of the bands------Other alternative is they don't play and who the hell wants that.

So Fuck StubHub, LiveNation, clear channel, etc. (Who also took the whole live tape and trade world into another $$$$$$$$$$ venture for themselves.

don';t blame the bands but do blame the industry suits that have no idea how to be proactive and creative on their own. It's all $$$$$ in their eyes not a way of being.

Groove On,

I feel that if Phish would indicate that they plan to do a few tours, at a minimum, it would ease this feeding frenzy. Of course, that would totally backfire against managements crafty announcement scheduling. I did not get in on the ticket action. Frankly, it would go against everything Phish means to me to pay some of the prices people are asking for tickets. I would hope for those well-intentioned pholks attending, that the overall vibe does not "pay the price" of this disheartening trend.

I faced problems myself. I was trying to get sunday tickets while my friend in Memphis was getting the Saturday tickets (for Alpine). I was just persistant and after he gave up, I just kept trying and finally got tickets for both Saturday and Sunday. The weird thing about the Satruday tickets is that I got a "sold out" message, but kept trying anyway and eventually I got them. I know a lot of people don't like Ticketmaster, but I never had a problem with them. Live Nation however is horrible. It it too bad for the people who couldn't get tickets. Alpine is gonna rock!

I know some people who "scalp" high demand tickets (concerts, sporting events, Broadway, etc...) and I asked them one time how they get these tickets. Their explaination made tons of sense. First, the band themselves (including stage hands, roadies, sound guys, band management, etc...) all get an allotted amount of tickets for each show. Most of these people affliated with the band then sell their tickets to these professional scalpers for "extra money" (as it was told to me). Same goes with the venue "corporate sponsors" (all those advertisements hanging in each venue...Coca-Cola, Budweiser, AllState Insurance, etc...). Those people, too, receive an allotted amounnt of tickets per show and they sell their tickets to these scalpers (they know who the scalpers are and how much each ticket is worth). Put all of these "allotted" tickets together, and you could be talking hundreds of tickets. On top of that, most of these "scalped" tickets are appearing on more than one website (they are owned by pretty much the same people or group of companies).

I'm sure these scalper guys have other means of getting tickets (I've heard stories of employees working at these venues having "arrangements" with scalpers to get them tickets).

It's like drugs people...when there's money to be made, corruption and greed take over (it's who you know, not necessarily what you know). It happens in our government, it happens in our big cities and small hometowns. Look at the people who set up "scams" after disasters looking to "take advantage" of others. It happened after 9/11 and Katrina. It's human nature.

Phish can't stop this...their management, their people are part of it. They know it. And as much as you think Phish can control their own destiny, they can't. Anyone familiar with the music industry knows the musicians have very little control over themselves and their "business".

I've been to over 50 phish shows since 1994. I'm not happy about this. I have my two nights in Hampton and then I'm done. It's sad to see something so good go this way. I understand how the Deadheads of the 60's and 70's felt when they experienced the clusterf*#@ of the 80's and 90's.

Young or old, experienced or new, it will never be the same.

The ticketing system/ lottery system needs to be reviewed. I have tried countless times to get tickets. I was on live nation for an hour and a half. Something is seriously messed up. This whole system of people scalping is fucked up too. I guess we will have to wait for another tour when everything is not so overly hyped up. It would be sweet that if you held old Phish ticket stubs, you could be processed first in the lottery. New fans are clogging up the system, but who gives its what happens when a band like this takes such a long hiatus.

I did not get tickets... I was only trying for the STL show at the Fox. The show is in my home town, at a great venue, I am too busy and my work is too important to do any road trips, and I have seen Phish over 20 times since '95... yet despite my persistance the lottery system (which opened up 4/5 of the tickets) essentially sold out the show (to out of towners and ticket scalpers) which left folks like me (who live and work in StL) to grapple for 1000 tickets on Friday (the actual day tickets went on sale)... needless to say I will not be seeing Phish this go around (I refuse to pay 700-4000$ for a ticket)... and while I miss the days when you actually had to work for your tickets (remember camping out to get a good place in line... or the old mail order system), and I am bummed about missing the kick off tour I am sure they will be out this way again... When they do come back to StL hopefully they will change the lottery system... instead of offering 80% of the tickets through a lottery why not only open up 20% so that folks have a better chance of seeing the band in their own home town?

I cant believe people expected it to be easy to get tickets. Some people get tickets, some dont. Expect it, deal with it. I am actually on the side of paying a little more for a ticket than whining and bitching and being upset for days at a time over this. Most of you could have already earned enough money to buy a scalped ticket in the amount of time u have spent bitching. I know that wont help stop scalpers, but what will, its been going on forever.

Here is a possible solution for of us who couldn't get the tickets yet... MORE SHOWS!!! Phish, you are apologizing, so, do somthing about it. Play more than 12 shows this summer. COME OUT WEST, play more 2/3 day runs at each play. we know you guys are making a killing of these few dates. How about being like a real tour act and dont stop for 4-5 months, play a 60 show tour like you did in the 90s. Your fans deserve that!

My issue isn't as much with the ticketing system being slow or crashing...that always happens and is some what almost impossible to avoid. The cost to put the computer infrastructure in place to handle 3 hours worth of excessive traffic every now and then is very high, but I digress.

The biggest issue I have is the additional costs Live Nation (Clear Channel) adds onto the tickets.

The ticket price is $42 + $12.85 (ticket fee) + $3 (parking fee) and $4.50 (facility fee)...that's $20.35 on each ticket!!! 49% of the cost of the ticket is additional BS fees...

The monopolistic practices of Live Nation are killing live music in this country.

I contend that for all high-demand shows, the band should make all tickets will-call only with no name changes. Sucks for the few people whose plans change, but the only way to ensure only fans want to see the shows and not just brokers who want to jack up ticket costs.

Bonnaroo lineup leak... i think. enjoy. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c225/brovich/BROO09.jpg"

That would be one sick line up, but who would headline? Paul, Phish, Daft Punk, or the Dead? Maybe they will have a headliner Thursday now also one for each big name.

But if you look through some bands websites one can find many conflicting tour dates. I saw Jamiroquia on there and they are in Germany & Russia during this time. Hard to make it to the US and back. I would go just to see them. Good job on photobucket. Someone has to much time.

Taken for their offical website.

Jamiroquai are pleased to announce the following tour dates for the coming months:

* 26 May, Portugal, Lisbon, Rock in Rio

* 02 June, Germany, Rock am Ring

* 04 June, Germany, Rock im Park

* 15 June, Russia, Saint Petersburg, Ice Palace

* 18 June, Russia, Moscow, Olympiski

* 20 June, Ukraine, Kiev, Palace Of Sports

* 22 June, Georgia, Tbilisi, Philharmonic Concert Hall, Tbilisi Jazz Festival

* 14 July, Netherlands, Rotterdam, Ahoy, North Sea Jazz Festival

* 23 July, England, London, Victoria Park, Lovebox Weekender festival

We hope to announce additional dates soon.

DMB41, i think that would be more of a clusterfuck than you imagine, but at least somebody's being constructive rather than just bitching. imagine 50,000 people cramming will-call lines at alpine: you'd have to get in line the night before and camp in your seat. we can all agree the system's fucked. i hope some day enough good-hearted people in the industry get together to destroy the scalping system. until then, have faith in the real phishheads who care! go to the venue early with a positive attitude, don't let the assholes get you down, there will be miracles and there will be lots of cool people selling extras at face value. not enough to satisfy everyone, but this won't be the last tour.

This is a completely inexcusable breakdown on behalf of LiveNation. Their infrastructure team most certainly did not do their homework. And as a result, what you have all witnessed may very well be a lasting impression of what the LiveNation ticket-purchasing experience is all about. When you run a ticketing site, sudden and extreme traffic bursts are indicative of your bread and butter. If you're not prepared for it, then you might as well hang up your hat and sell lemonade and Girl Scout Cookies on a street corner somewhere.

What a fucking blunder. I assume someone will lose their job over this.

What we all should do, if at a show, is if you find a scalper(the true scalpers, not just fans trying to get rid of an extra ticket or 2) and sick the police on them. They are the ones who are buying many extras for just profit. If we keep doing this then they may think twice about scalping at shows. just a thought

In person box offices only - 2 tickets per customer. Or a lottery for all of the tickets where duplicate names, shipping or billing addresses would be taken out of consideration. And if tickets are in that high demand... give as many fans as possible 2 tickets to one show. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see multiple shows, but would understand trying to spread the luck around so more people can experience.

Not to mention they would easily sellout a 50k stadium in one day, no doubt. 3 night runs at RFK and other major cities for example.

It ain't like they can't afford to put on shows on a bigger scale, guess I'll be listening to the recordings.

Phish dosen't owe you jack shit, and if you choose to hold such a grudge then its all your loss. I'm sorry dude, but you saying that you went on panic tour tells a lot oabout you. Different stokes for different folks, but to say panic tour is/will be better than phish tour is a joke right?

for a bunch of peaceful, happy hippies, you are all really angry...iit doesnt matter to me anyway...those of us who got tickets are happy and are looking forward to the shows...no system is perfect, so be realistic with the fact that an overload on a website selling tickets for a band in such high demand is inevitable...those of us who couldnt go to the box offices and were persistent with our OCD about getting tickets through the livenation website were successful...and i laugh at the rest of you who complain...HOW COULD YOU NOT PREDICT THIS??? and if you couldnt predict it, HOW ARE YOU SURPRISED THAT IT HAPPENED THIS WAY???...anyway, all of my friends and i got tickets to all of the shows that we want to go see, and we are all happy...see you on tour

Livenation charged me $250 TWICE for Deer Creek, ended up with no tickets... After holding on the phone to bitch like crazy, they finally said they would return the $500 to me... And I was able to buy 4 tickets on the phone..for an additional $250. Totally drained my account, and left me no choice but to buy my Alpine tickets from scalpers.

I have a couple problems. First, livenation's site was a joke. I just wish that Bonnaroo would have announced their lineup last week. I they always used to announce it in late January, and with the likely rumors of Phish, it could have possible diverted some of the traffic away from the site as many people may have just gone to Bonnaroo to see them for their lone show of the tour. Oh well, I'll just try to catch them next time around, but they need to play large venues. It may be time for this band to realize that summer stadiums may be in order. It's not like these 20,000+ amphitheaters are intimate venues. Don't add dates for this tour, just play bigger shows. Congrats to all that got tickets. (if anyone has camden extras...)

Heres a solution to all the ticketless fans: ENTIRE TOUR PAY PER VIEW PHISH CHANNELS. problem solved. A great way to make sure that the demand is made less is to let people watch the shows in their home on HDTV pay per view for a slight subscription fee. I know i'd order every show!

after reading broseau's hateful comment towards younger fans, i'd sincerely hope that EVERY 18 year old in this country gets a shot at broseau's seat before he does. With that attitude nobody wants someone like you at the shows. Learn to accept people for who they are no matter what age they are. I'm glad for the influx of 18 year old fans...pretty soon they will outnumber people like brosaeu and deathtonoobs. The scene will be much better once haters like bro have gone back to panic tour.

I saw Tom Waits last year for the first time. I could never get a ticket before. Tom is a genius. He made you pay with a credit card. You could only buy two tix. Upon entering the venue you had to show ID and credit card used to purchase and only then did you get your tix. The show was awesome.

I'm sorry, but please don't bitch about "noobs", new phish fans, or anyone that wasn't there in '93. I'm 26, I'v been into Phish since I was about 12, and I'll say to anyone that has become a fan of Phish's music in the last 5 years, WELCOME. Glad to have you, and i hope your first show is GREAT, I'll never forget my first show, and I don't think I'v seen a Phish show since my first that matched up to it, it's truely a once in a life-time experience. How can anyone that loves this band bitch at someone else for being a fan as well? I don't care if a 14 year old bought lawnboy last week, and now he's going to his first show this summer, GOOD FOR HIM! I'd rather more Phish fans in the world than that same kid turning into a corporate rock or american idol style asshole. Blaming fans for other fans not getting tickets, that's just iggnorant. EVEN PHISH POINTED THE FINGURE AT LIVENATION THIS MORNING, IT WAS LIVENATION'S FAULT, not the highschool kids that were blessed with discovering great music, and then, god forbid, actully want to go see Phish live! Man, people say I make some asshole comments on here, but I think the "Phish-Elitists" have me beat. Why so much hate towards younger fans? Maybe, just maybe, they were to young to see phish a few years ago, or maybe they just recently had a friend turn them onto phish...Ive been listening to phish for 15 years, but ive only been to 5 shows. Everyone is new at some point. I enjoy seeing younger kids at the shows. I see younger kids at most jamband and bluegrass shows, and I think its great! I can safely say that no kids in my school where into phish, or bluegrass for that matter. Its good to see the kids shuffling their feet in the right direction=) Welcome newcomers, we're not all wankers, just some of the older, bitter, jaded phans are wankers. Not all, but some. I hope the vibe is better out on the road, good company has always been an important ingredient for phish shows.

I spent a total of 4 hours trying for tickets, and I got my alpine shows and deer creek, but i consider myself lucky.

AND, to some of the more dumb comments posted, not everyone lives near deer creek, so many of us HAVE to use the internet/phone for tickets.

Anyways, lighten up folks, this is gonna be the greatest year ever, and I for one, am excited as hell! =)

life is hard. roll with the punches or hit the mat and go down for the count. You think i wasn't straight up denied for hampton lottery/onsale? You think i wasn't denied in the lottery for summer and wasn't shut out of several summer shows? I got lucky and scored tickets to 2 shows, but i'm not blaming phish for being too popular. Thats a joke statement right? Phish isn't gonna EVER get any less popular. Get used to it...shit changes.

If you want to blame someone for your troubles then you can only blame yourself. Your not the only one who was shut out of several shows. Get over it. Or you can hold a grudge like the dude above and stay home mad at the world this summer. You say younger fans are the problem, but i say its older fans like you who are quick to chastize a younger fan that are the problem. Maybe its other "SEASONED veterans" like yourself that make it impossible for ANYONE (young or old) to get tickets. "revole and cycle through, don't keep coming back for more" - frankie sez

Its not Phish or the demand for tickets(which is high in this case)causing this. Its the goddamn legalized scalping that is happening online for all shows. It happened at WSP on New Years and by the time of the show there were hundreds of extras. It happened with the Dead just recently for Shoreline too. Ticketbastard and Livenation are selling thousands of seats to the huge online scalping companies. Its BS!! Phish or someone should sue them!

Same deal for the Dead, they are claiming the lawn seats at Shoreline sold out on the first day, but yet you can easily get them for above face value at an internet link sponsored by live nation and ticketmaster. Why is that?

Legal scalping plain and simple and it is not bieng done by Phish fans.

I'm glad and really envious of you that you've already gotten to see them live, and you should feel that same that newer fans are getting the same chance you've already had many times before.

Reading most of these comments made me pretty depressed. Such a short time ago people were overjoyed by the news of the reunion, and now just a bunch of vitriolic comments. First of all, it's great for the people who were actually able to get tickets, but imagine how it feels for the people who didn't get any to have to read about your success. Second of all, I am really happy for younger folks who will get a chance to see one of their favorite bands. If people want to vent, take it on livenation. My lawn ticket for Comcast Center was $42.50, plus $12.85 facility fee, plus $7 ticket fee, for a total of $62! That's outrageous! And what about the band?

I am sure they knew in advance about livenation's outrageous fees, so shouldn't they have known better? Let's be happy for the folks who got tix, and for those who didn't, here's to a Fall or Winter tour.

Broesau--your argument is flawed based on the inverse assertion that there are noobs out there who didn't get tickets because of people like you who have already seen phish 10's of times. You are right in saying that the noobs make it more difficult to get tickets but thats not such a remarkable statement, obviously with more people comes higher demand. The point is that everyone is entitled to try and get tickets regardless of age. Having never seen Phish myself, I am glad that you feel in some sensational mindset that I have your ticket.

Sure, you might have to pay out the a$$ for it, but there are ways to get into the shows you want to see. No one is "shut out", even from hampton if you got the money to throw down. Like i said i hate the scalpers more than anyone, but if you buy tickets from ticketsnow you are 100% guarenteed to get tickets. played their asses off on 11/02/1996 and released the tweezer from gainesville 1996 as a track on "road to vegas,

Unfortunatley, Phish is involved in a business. This business makes lots of people happy. No matter what your age is, or how long you've been listening to them is irrelevant. The supply of their tickets is less than the demand for them. Live with it. There is much worse going on in the world, than one not being able to get Phish tickets for whatever reason. I might never understand the innerworkings of the Phish orginazation, but I am trusting that they as a band will now be touring seasonaly FROM NOW ON, and I/we should be patient and we will ALL get to be a part of the magic of a PHISH show again. But it did take me a long time and I'm sure a ton of people got screwed out of tix, I definitely was surprised that I wasn't one of them. At any rate, the people saying "dont buy from scalpers" are right on point. Think of it like this...if this tour goes well and Phish kicks ass like I think they will, then they will likely tour again and you will have another chance to see them anyway...And if they come out and play like hell and the tour is a failure, then you can rest easy knowing you didn't waste your money going to the shows. This is there first tour in 4 years and the first tour with a management company not there own. With the economy in shambles and Bands and companies losing money for the past couple years including festivals, why would a new management company want to risk a ton of money in hopes that people will buy tickets and sell out every night. I admit the Fox and Asheville are very small venues, but 15,000 is not that small.

The Fox is beautiful and most bands would love to play that room, Phish decided they would.

There will be tickets available for every show except Hampton, Asheville, and St Louis, people just need to chill out. Blame the fans that bought extra tickets to every night and shows they do not plan on attending just so they have trade bait for the shows they want along with the scalpers.

Sorry if this has been said already, but I like how they understand how screwed up the whole process was, but they didn't offer any solutions. They should have realized there was a problem when the Hampton MO lottery was announced, and they should have come up with a better system. AC/DC has a system in place where your name is printed on the ticket (you have to show ID & the names have to match). They knew there was going to be ticket issues when they decided to come back and they should have planned for it. I have been on the bus since Walnut Creek '94 and I've never been so disappointed by this band. I tried the lottery and ticket agencies for Hampton and summer tour....and no tickets for me. I guess I can rest easy in the fact that the music will probably suck....and at least I've got my Umphrey's.

Bad news on the horizon with LIVE NATION & TICKETMASTER in merger talks according to the Wall Street journal... http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTRE5130LN20090204

This paragraph irks me the most... Live Nation has been trying to boost its thin concert- promoter margins by diversifying into adjacent businesses such as ticketing, which has margins as high as 25 percent versus an average 4 percent from concert promotion.

Yeah, boycott the free market!

In all seriousness, the amount of whining in here is laughable. I love my tunes as much as the next guy, but missing a show (or a few) for whatever reason(s) is simply a part of life. I missed a Motley Crue show when I was 7 because my grandma died and I think everything turned out to be alright. The ticketing system is the way it is, and no one cares how many wook tears are cried about missing the ______ leg of the Phish tour. The reality of the situation is that most of the people who want to see Phish this tour will not get to. If the shows go alright, there will be more opportunities for everyone. In the meantime, go out and catch a show or two by a different act; there are more than a few bands out there right now that are ripping it up, so find something else to hold you over.

In an idealistic manner, I agree about shutting out the scalpers; but realistically, we live in a capitalist society (thank God). That very well may change soon, and my thought is it won't be for the best. The only way to control free trade (scalping, drug sales, and having fun in general) is through government intervention (prison, etc), and, unless I'm mistaken, us "free loving, screw the man hippies" don't want too much government. A commune is fun in the U.S, when it pertains to free thinkers living on a farm all butt naked, but the word itself expands into communism (which practiced in government equates to poverty and sadness for the masses). Stop bitching about the scalpers (although I fucking hate them, personally). They are working in a free society. Adopt the opportunity to thrive in the most opportunistic society in the world. Either that, or be a non-productive welfare receiver all your life. You have the choice.

they spit in the face of all of us phish fans with their crooked stealing of hampton and summer tour tickets. But they cower in the shadow of bruce springsteen:

Tickemaster responds to Bruce:

Irving Azoff, CEO of Ticketmaster Entertainment, responds.

An Open Letter of Apology to Bruce Springsteen, Jon Landau and the entire Springsteen Tour Team:

While we were genuinely trying to do the right thing for fans in providing more choices when the tickets they requested from the primary on-sale were not available, we clearly missed the mark. Fans are confused and angry, which is the opposite of what we hoped to accomplish. We sincerely apologize to Bruce, his organization and, above all, his fans.

We recognize that we need to change our course. We have committed to Bruce and state publicly here that we have taken down all links for Bruce’s shows directing fans from Ticketmaster to TicketsNow. This redirection only occurred as a choice when we could not satisfy fans’ specific search request for primary ticket inventory, but to make sure there is no misunderstanding in the future, we also publicly state that we will never again link to TicketsNow in a manner that can possibly create any confusion during a high-demand on-sale. Specifically, we will not present an option to go to TicketsNow from Ticketmaster without the consent of the artist and the venue, both of whom work together to bring the joy of live entertainment to millions of fans.

If any fans inadvertently purchased tickets in the resale marketplace believing in error they were purchasing from the initial on-sale, we will refund the difference between the actual purchase price and the face price of the ticket. (Please don’t abuse this good faith gesture - we did not give brokers any preferential access to tickets.)

We are committed to helping deliver the most transparent and best live entertainment experience to fans. We will do better going forward.

Sincerely,

Irving Azoff, CEO, Ticketmaster Entertainment

It seems like these ticket companies (livenation/ticketmaster) would have their shit together by now. Phish isn't the only band to sell out like this... Radiohead also was hell to get tickets for. THEY NEED TO FIX THE FING SITE SOMEHOW SO IT CAN SUPPORT THIS KIND OF TRAFFIC. Either that or have a few sites selling tix so that way all the traffic won't crash it. I'm not sure about livenation and ticketmaster, but back in the day I worked at a Karma and they were partnered with scalpers. Those dirty f's would come in and print off stacks of tickets before anyone from the line was let in, either that or they would pay people to stand in line do a drawing for the line and set it up so they would have extra time to print plenty off for them. It was BS! I quit that job after a few months of working there and seeing this a few times.

Can't wait for Deer Creek. Still wish I could have got Hampton tix, but still just happy to get to go. Rothbury made my last summer, what a pleasant surprise, with not so much surprise.

Oh and as far as to the people that say "if you didn't see Phish back in the day, you aren't a fan." F-U That is completely ridiculous. You should be happy that you are cool enough to like a band that has such a following of diverse ages. It just proves how awesome Phish is, that they were gone for 5 years but still their fan base continued to grow. I do get annoyed at some shows with a younger crowd, but as long as they are respectful to other phans and the band and are not there to get all f-d up and act like a jackass...I welcome them, which that goes for anybody no matter the age, if you come acting like an a5s and not being respectful you do not belong there.

PHISH is partly to blame. If anyone they know more than just about anyone in the music business the demand for tickets they draw especially when they have been away for a few years and know they are eagerly anticipated. I feel that the Band/record company should have invested money into making their own ticketing website, the money PHISH loses to ticketing companies would have easily be saved and only a small portion would be lost in the initial investment of a new website dedicated to be able to deal with such HUGE server demands that are demonstrated everytime their tickets go on sale. It is a crime for Ticketmaster to have a sister company STUBHUB which sells tickets for scalpers. For Hampton tickets to go from $60 to $350 is outrageous. I feel the band need to make an effort to protect their phans, since phish phans are a bit more dedicated than most musical group's.

I understand their are hurdles and BS red tape with dealing with venues but honestly these guys are super wealthy and could easily find a few stoner geniuses to make the super bad ass phish ticket website where the band would make more money due to not losing it to ticketing companies, the band would have more control how the tickets are sold and be able to support the internet server demand it needs.

I tried and tried and was lusky to get 3 Burgettstown tickets, being from the Philly/West Chester area that not bad but this was the first time using Live Nation and was very poor first impression. I work in IT and server space is actually quite cheap for the money they are making for selling other people's goods/services. They are just another greedy evil corp trying to eek out every nickel. I only hope Trey/John Phish find a solution, its a bummer to see scum bags selling tickets for %700 over regular price and dedicated fans and new fans not being able to see the show. Why not require having the tickets sold only at the in person ticketmaster locations? Wouldn't that slow down the internet scalper jockeys sitting at home swiping tickets for resale a bit?

Springsteen fans are feeling the scam this morning. Sold out in less than five minutes, with thousands of tickets on ebay, stubhub, ticketsnow...etc.

This has got to be organised crime. Why is this not illegal? I remember people getting arrested in the 90's at dead shows who were scalping tickets. Now because they have a website, it's ok to do it?

Does anyone know how this became ok? There had to a law changed or a loophole or something.

How is it legal for Ticketbastard to own Stubhub. Isn't that a conflict of interest? Wouldn't Ticketmaster make for money if the people who purchased tickets on Ticketmaster resell them on Stubhub? Ebay you suck cock for allowing these items to be on your site. Phish start selling your own tickets, stop allowing other evil corporations to make money off of you and your fans. I feel it is some responsibility of the Band to direct these changes happen ASAP. To work with a company that obviously allows preferential treatment to Ticket Brokers is really shitty. Who can have any respect for themselves who calls themself a Ticket Broker "hey there I buy concert/event tickets and I resell them at %700, yes you are a scalper. How can a scalper outside a show be arrested but if you do it through stubhub its legal? If you bought gas during the 70's oil crisis and tried selling it at %700 you would be arrested asap. This is complete BS. Trey, Jon DO SOMETHING ALREADY. You are very wealthy, invest the $500,000 to start your own ticket vendor company and do it the right way and stop giving greedy evil corps yours/ and our money to them

Frst off, thanks to the band for finally addressing this issue. I feel it was too little, too late perhaps. The actions taken by "the boss" were a little more poignant than an issued statement. I feel that phish fans deserved to have their voices heard along with the Boss's fans. Heres a little story to illustrate how these "ticket brokers" and scalpers have destroyed the concert scene. Back in 99 i was shut out of one of the 4th of july phish shows at Lakewood in atlanta. This was back in the days when a sell out meant that a show sold out due to fans buying tickets, not scalper agencies getting high allotments of tickets thus forcing a show to sell out like today. I went to a ticket broker in atlanta and was able to buy a ticket. The face value on the ticket was like $28.75 and i ended up buying it from the ticket broker for like $50. That wasn't so bad and that's how buying tickets from a broker should be. Compare that to today with a $50 ticket being sold for $200 - $400 each. The methods employed by ticketmaster and their company owned sites such as ticketsnow and stubhub is a form of organized crime. Not to mention the wild west anything goes markets of e-bay and craigslist. The idea of having tickets with a person's name on them like airline tickets is how this process should be done. If you decided you can't go to the show, then you give your ticket back and they issue it to someone else. This would make sure fans actually got thier tickets, and that people with no intent of going to the show couldn't resell it for 500% profit. The recent Bruce Spreenstein events mirrored exactly the same type of racket that ticketbastard used to steal vast quantities of hampton and asheville tickets. Livenation is no better, and IMO is also guilty of fraud after their whack ass onsales over the past weekend. You notice that once again actual fans came away ticketless in massive quanitities, yet all the sleazy ticket broker houses have their stacks of tickets to sell to line their pockets with profit. I hope this whole mess gets worked out because the proposed merger of livenation and ticketbastard is not going to make things any easier for the hard working fans out here who just want to see a show for a reasonable price.

I totally agree with you funky...people who have never seen em don't understand my obsession. I would've gone crazy if I didn't end up getting tix to a few of the summer shows last minute (star lake, creek, and the alpine shows to be exact). Either way, I still didnt get tix to the Hampton shows, and in all honesty, you can blame it on noobs or ticketmaster or livenation or whatever the hell people are blaming it on, but the fact is the tix were hard to get when they came back to MSG for NYE 02, and now 6 years later its going to be even harder. People are getting on here saying "what happened to good ol' mail order tickets?" Well the year is 2009, and even if they were to do mail order tix there is just too much of a demand and not enough supply. Most of the people who were shut out by livenation last week would have still missed out on tix if Phish did all their ticketing by mail order. Unfortunately thats what happens when you come across something as rare and amazing as Phish. Think about the fact that Nobody, I mean NOBODY, does it like Phish...and given the fact that they have been around for over 25 years now, its no surprise that its this hard to get tickets. One thing you can count on, though, is that if they come out and tear it up like I know they will, and they get back in full swing, there will be plenty more shows for all of us to see....and plenty more for some of us to get shut out of so we can get back on here and do this all again!!!!

thanks for the video, but i am still ticketless. :( unfortunately i have a job and couldnt spend 3 hrs trying to fight technology for tickets. but youll have that. phish is a great band. and has a lot of dedicated phans. BUT let me tell you what really grinds my gears..... all the phuckers that got through, got tickets and are selling them for some obnoxious value. phuck them! of course the day tickets went on sale, i checked around and couldnt help but let a couple people know how i felt about their selfishness! so if you arent one of the phuckers and did get tickets to PA, WI or IN pllllllllllllease let me know! much love!

funkymofo you are an idiot, you don't own phish nor is your many years more of being a fan than everyone else makes you more eligible to get tickets before "newbie snivelers go to more than two 'real' shows" You are a jackass to actually think you have a right to complain that younger fans added to the problem of you not able to get tickets. PLEASE get a life and sit and spin. I have been going to Phish shows since 92' and I am happy to see younger people find joy in such a great group of musicians and dedicated fans. It is jerkoffs like funkyMoFo that ruin it for others with their whining about this and that. Wake up and understand that with the internet these tickets for sale are available to anyone on the planet not just people waiting at ticketbastard locations or the actual venue.
