i live in new orleans and jazz fest is a holiday to me...however, superfly has been mediocre (at best) for the past 2 years...this initial lineup could mark am increase in the quality of music brought to jazz fest by superfly...i cant wait to find out who else they bring..........EXCITEMENT IS PENETRATING!!!!!!!!

I can't wait to see what The Revivalists are gona be up to during Jazz Fest. I was hoping that Superfly would have picked up on them and put them on this year...anyone who hasn't heard of them should check them out at myspace.com/revivalists

don't be scared by the name.

Death Cab For Cutie have terrific intense songs that are perfect for the live setting. Everybody loves to bash on this band and I'll admit, when I heard the name, it was weird to say the least. But upon listening to these guys I can see that Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla write really good tunes and lay down some beautiful sonic textures to go with them.

No Karl D? Robert Walters? Dirty Dozen? Rebirth Brass? Greyboy? John Cleary? Throw in a more big funky names with horn sections and I may change my view, as of right now this really doesn't have a standard JazzFest lineup.

No offense to death cab fans out there, but when i go to a festival, about the last thing that really gets me in the mood to have a good time is ben gibbards sappy voice. jason mcgerr is about the only good thing in that band. i just would rather death cab play somehwhere other than festivals. i just dont get it.

Galactic's Jamcruise show with Shorty, Big Sam, and Wolfman was one of their best (and one of the best on the boat), so it's great to see them continuing to do shows together.

"This marks the first time Death Cab For Cutie has been a part of the Superfly during Jazzfest Concert Series." maybe that's because their music has nothing to do with jazz... don't get me wrong, i am not bashing this band - i have their music on my ipod. I'm just saying that them playing a jazzfest show makes no sense.

deadpig79

thank you fishbone1. they have nothing to do with jazz at all. they should never be allowed in a place like new orleans.ive seen galactic hundreds of times, but i will not shell out 45 bucks to get the dickhead jazz tourist vibe when the money goes to superfly! i'd rather be at le bon temp or chickie's. take that superfly, douches!

it's bad when bonnaroo has more big name jazz artists than a supposed "jazz festival." don't get me wrong, i have nothing against a diverse jazz lineup and galactic is pretty awesome but c'mon. at least get dr. john, marco benevento, or MMW, or even better, how bout sonny rollins or herbie hancock. I just cant help thinking what louis armstrong would say about a band like death can playing at a jazz festival at the place where it all started.

i hear you laxd1314, it really doesn't have a jazz vibe from the lineup here. I would rather pop in some Monk, Miles, or Train at home than see indie tunes at a Jazz fest

It's funny to read remarks and laugh at those who've never been here like laxd14. Also, to respond to this guy "No Karl D? Robert Walters? Dirty Dozen? Rebirth Brass? Greyboy? John Cleary? Throw in a more big funky names with horn sections and I may change my view, as of right now this really doesn't have a standard JazzFest lineup.:...GO TO THE JAZZ FEST lineup or check out the Howlin Wolf show on May 2 and then write something that makes sense. Don't bash until you know the facts, fool.

Most of you haven't been to jazzfest. If u have been you would realize-

1- Its not all Jazz

2- It is not a "traditional hippy festival" (DCfC isn't "headlining" anything)

3- there will be 10 other shows happening that night and u will like at least a couple of them

4- And are we still that immature that we have to talk trash about a band because they are not your type ? time to grow up a little

See you in NOLA !!!

superfly sux because.....

they boycotted Robert Walters 20th Congress from bonnaroo, because Robert wanted to play the Maple leaf during jazz fest and not superfly's venue.

the music business can be just as any other business.

Since it is clear that many of your are speaking from a place of complete and utter ignorance, let me put it to you plainly: these shows are not part of JazzFest. They are evening gigs put on by Superfly, an independant production company who, depending on your position, eiher blows or rules. That is not really the point. The point is that this kind of reactionary crap is absurd and becoming far too commonplace on this site.

If you would like to untwist your panties, breathe, and take a look at the bigger picture, consider visiting Swag for constantly evolving night show grids here: http://www.jazzfestgrids.com/?www.petdekat.com/. If you would like to know what happening with JazzFest itself, they actually have their own website (can you believe that?): http://www.nojazzfest.com/.

I suppose that if you can't even figure out how to find the info you need to shape rational thought, you really can't be expected to navigate a weekend of the best music on the planet in one of its funkiest cities. Which, now that I think about it, explains why most of you have never been.

Speak from experience people, or don't speak.

Honestly the Superfly Jazzfest series has gone so downhill since they pulled out of New Orleans after Katrina. They still make a feeble attempt to come here once a year and exploit New Orleans.

The local clubs have done a stellar job at booking AMAZING night shows at GREAT, LOCAL VENUES that are actually music clubs- not converted tourist attractions.

Jazzfest is in fact an amazing 2 weeks of the most incredible music and experiences, ever, and if you have not been you should check it out immediately!

hey, phi1481...i couldnt agree with you more...there is a MAJOR difference between superfly and jazz fest...those who think that death cab for cutie or this galactic show are a part of jazz fest are wrong...the two things that are in common with the shows are the time and place (end of april/beginning of may, and new orleans)...but they are two different entities moving in two different directions...i participate in the jazz fest weekends as much as i can for both weekends each year...and due to my experience with both superfly and jazz fest, i know the following facts:

1) jazz fest is really called the New Orleans Jazz and HERITAGE festival

(food, art, parades, and of course a WIDE VARIETY of music, which means not just jazz)

2) all concerts at the jazz fest are decided on by the jazz and heritage foundation

3) due to the heritage aspect of the festival, there are many things to do at the festival other than seeing live music

4) there are MANY MANY concerts at night that are, in no way, sponsored or attached to the jazz and heritage foundation

5) superfly decides on and sponsors a few concerts to be played at various venues around the city of new orleans during this time of the year

6) these concerts sponsored by superfly are not necessarily related to jazz fest in any way

7) there are concerts in the city at night during the time of jazz fest which superfly has no control over

8) you will not go without music during this time of the year

THEREFORE, if you do not like what superfly is doing or who is playing for them, then check out the websites that phi1481 has posted, and you might find something that interests you, and if you are specifically curious about the actual JAZZ AND HERITAGE FESTIVAL, then focus on www.nojazzfest.com, but do not think for a second that death cab for cutie is headlining anything that is sponsored by jazz fest.

once you experience the weekends and all aspects of the weekends you will understand, but until you do, dont say things that you know nothing about

I too have similar lamentations about the Saenger. My first Festivus was JF '02 and caught both MMW & Galactic w/ the Girls of the Shim Sham Review at the Saenger. The Galactic show ellicted the following out of my group of fellow first tiimers "it's the funktificaiton of a nation!"...which is why we're headed back for our 6th JF. Also, there's a big difference between 1st & 2nd wknd; my preference has always been 2nd wknd.
