Umphrey's McGee: Power to the People

Umphrey's McGee by Kevin Browning
The current state of the music industry is leaving many artists seeking new ways to get their music into your hands. TV show and commercial licensing or signing 360-degree deals, wherein artists exchange part of their touring revenue and merchandise sales for exclusive deals with the world's biggest concert promoters, is becoming commonplace. At the same time iTunes has stopped selling music with digital rights protection and the RIAA has virtually given up prosecuting music fans and P2P sites. Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead have experimented with giving downloading fans the upper hand in transactions, which has proven successful for consumers and purveyors alike. Looking to harness fan-power, many artists post their MP3s for free hoping that word-of-mouth and file trading will ultimately result in greater sales and more people at live shows. Umphrey's McGee, too, is trying something creative with their new disc, Mantis (released January 20 on SCI Fidelity), to engage and reward their fans.

For their eighth album, the Chicago six are using an original, innovative pre-order campaign where the more individual people that order the album in advance, the more unreleased bonus content is "unlocked" for everyone. Conceived of for the benefit of Umphrey's fans by the band's manager Vincent Iwinski, their 'consigliere' Syd Schwartz, and UM soundman Kevin Browning, those who purchase Mantis will be granted access to an exclusive micro-site, where users will be able to download content throughout 2009. Using PUSHâ„¢ technology by Digital Insert, the Mantis disc will act as a key for unreleased live jams, video, rehearsal material and other previously unreleased content, allowing fans a fly-on-the-wall experience that unfolds as content becomes available over the next 12 months. Browning has recorded a staggering amount of behind the scenes material over the past decade and guitarist/lyricist Brendan Bayliss reveals, "Nothing is sacred." Already six of the nine content tiers have been unlocked, indicating strong pre-order numbers, but guitarist Jake Cinninger points out, "The more people jump on, the more we're willing to let go."

Umphrey's McGee by Chad Smith
In an even less traditional strategy for a touring band, all the music on Mantis is unreleased and has never been played live - all fresh stuff for eager fan ears. "We wanted to create something that was a statement before anyone - our fans or our friends - could give us input," says Cinninger. Adds Bayliss, "For the first time we didn't owe anyone money, had no contract and no time schedule." Tracks were free to marinate and develop at a slower pace, and they were also aware that they wanted to try to recreate something like "a '70s release from your favorite band" notes Cinninger, Mantis is like when you went to the record store wild with anticipation for something you hadn't yet heard. It's a foreign experience in this day of closing brick 'n' mortar stores and leaked Internet tracks, but Bayliss confirms it was important to "sit on stuff" to make Mantis' release that much more special and effective.

In January 2006, UM's members brought their individual song ideas to Chicago's I.V. Lab Studios only as riffs, musical ideas or choruses. In all, they had three discs (four hours) worth of ideas and the trick was to let them fall into place, to "let them manifest themselves," like putting a puzzle together when you don't know the final image. Given the near-constant touring and demands of life, according to Bayliss, it wasn't until a year later that they knew what material would be on the album, and then it took another year of fine-tuning. Cinninger explains that time was the "architecture" needed to create something from almost nothing, and that they really strived to use the studio as a tool to create something wholly pleasing to the band's "ears and hearts." The result is an album with depth and balance that demands and holds the listener's interest.

Mantis was originally a working title, but it grew on the band. They wanted a name that was unique and "Google-able," yet not an overused word, explains Cinninger. Additionally, they wanted to create an album that reflected where they are as individuals and a band. They strived to find their studio voice, a nuanced version of their onstage improvisational fortitude, something upon which they "can hang their hat[s] on at the end of the day," as Cinninger puts it.

With a greater attention to songcraft and space, I think they did it. Mantis feels more cohesive than past efforts, like their vision has been achieved. Opening track "Made to Measure" is a poppy, lofty cut prominently featuring Bayliss' vocals and consonant string arrangement. It's followed by "Preamble," a short, sweet music box melody; the sound of metal combs plinking across pins arranged on a rotating cylinder. But it isn't until the third and title track that Mantis really hits its stride. From there on, the album is clearly Umphrey's McGee - the chunky, riff driven guitars, shored up by a killer rhythm section. Seven of the ten tracks on Mantis have lyrics, and as Bayliss tells it, there was a greater effort to deliver a song-oriented album. "More lyrics make [a piece] easier to hold onto," he says.

-Brendan Bayliss on the making of Mantis

Many of the tracks are shorter than Umphrey's fans may be used to, and Mantis doesn't feature any "Jimmy Stewart" extended jams. The title track is the longest, clocking in at just under 12 minutes with soaring, layered choruses. Cinninger's wicked solo is perfectly nestled among the strings, keys and percussive elements. "I wanted [solos] to have a special feel, like making a statement," he says of the limited jamming throughout. Not that there aren't some serious jams; the next track, "Cemetery Walk," flows seamlessly out of "Mantis" with a keyboard intro that slides into a funk driven, backbeat and Beatles harmonies during the chorus.

Umphrey's McGee by Brett Saul
From that section flows the short, livetronica "Cemetery Walk II." Cinninger says, "We wanted simple song construction with great melodies with rippin' guitar solos." Mark my words, "Cemetery Walk" unleashed in a live setting will become a serious sensory force, a monster jam. With increased attention to production quality, both the new album and their live shows are a complete package, with lights and backdrops adding further dimensions in concert. Talking about the album and the live experience, Cinninger sums up the band's modus operandi: "Big. Simple. Epic."

Overall, Mantis' sound is warmer with rounder edges than previous efforts. With its huge solo and unmistakable phrasing, "Turn & Run" is unmistakably Umphrey's. With the following "Spires," all nitrousy keys and riff-drum lock, tracks six and seven are a one-two punch. Rounding out the disc is the technical yet soulful "Red Tape" and "1348." Stylistically diverse and balancing sweetness with the requisite proggyness, the closer feels like it is a teaser for more to come, but at 54 minutes the disc is done. With this "less is more" approach, it's easier to digest the sounds and lyrics, and this less dense, less hurried approach works well. As the band has matured so has their sound, delivery and overriding sensibilities.

Lyrically, two themes loom large on Mantis, with some tracks featuring a religious or spiritual bent and others working political overtones. Though Cinninger insists somber names like "Cemetery Walk" were simply working titles, a tongue-in-cheek nod to Norwegian black metal, when looked at in the context of others Mantis tracks like "Spires" or the tonally angular "Prophecy Now," one concludes the album is more than a little introspective. Though he's hesitant to conduct a lyrical play-by-play or come off as "preachy," when asked about the spiritual imagery, Bayliss confirms the subject matter is partially a reflection of his personal growth. "I wanted to dip my feet in, not dive in," Bayliss offers. Similarly, when asked about the subject matter Cinninger stops short, but agrees that the power of myths, the nature of the unknown and not necessarily intended, are lures that can be harnessed and become something greater and more meaningful than an idea's original intent.

Umphrey's McGee by Kevin Browning
With the second thematic angle being political, I couldn't help but wonder if there was something to this pairing of concepts. On the promotional one-sheet for Mantis, the second line informs us that "mantis" is the Greek word for "prophet." The band hails from Chicago, and Mantis' release date is Inauguration Day. But, when I ask lyricist Bayliss about this he denies any significance and won't take my bait. After two evolutionary years in the making, most likely it is coincidence, but is it even a stretch to read the collective nature of the pre-order, individual investment for the greater good, as not at all dissimilar to the Obama campaign's spirit of community and "Yes We Can" attitude? Collective consciousness movements are born from ideas and dialogue, whether musical, spiritual or political, and as Cinninger suggested, are open to interpretation by all. And anyone's interpretation is just as valid as the next person's take.

The immediate future sees Umphrey's McGee appearing on the PBS series Soundstage on February 5, 2009. Following that, the band embarks on nearly four solid months of touring though the Midwest, South, and East Coast, which will then find them in the middle of summer festival season. Longtime Umph plans are to continue working on their songwriting and thinking of new ways to engage their fans. Rest assured, though, with a copy of Mantis in your disc drive, you are set with new material for at least another year.

Umphrey's McGee is on tour now; dates available here.

Still waiting on my mantis deluxe so I can give it a first listen on vinyl. Its kinda crazy they named a song 1348 as it was the house number of where I lived my whole life, so it is pretty significant to me in that respect. Good Article, Good band. Keep the good times comin!

Umphrey's is great. I did the preorder and am glad that I did. The article has great insight into the bands thoughts, opinions and motivations... until of course the second to last paragraph where our author decided to impart her transparent political views. It's a great day for America no doubt, but I came to jambase for a refuge after 24 hours of nonstop inauguration coverage... can we please focus on the music?

Seriously though... if you have listened to Umphrey's for at least the last 5 or 6 years - it is without question that they have changed muscially and the crowds at their shows have changed - and both are not good changes. And it is really too bad - one of my fav's a couple yrs. back.

I CAN NOT understand why so many people give these guys grief. I myself have been a late bloomer on this band and since have fallen in love with there live performance. In my opinion they have been the best thing going since the Phish breakup in the jam band world. My tastes may be a little different as far as jamming goes. I love "prog rock"- Zappa, Rush, early Yes etc. and maybe thats the difference. Lets face it- The "jam" scene has taken a nose dive in popularity since the Phish explosion of the nineties. When I was younger going to all the Phish shows before they were a household name were my best experiences in this community and its been reviving to see another smaller band blow my mind in an intimate setting. I don't think we will ever see the neo-hippie explosion of the nineties again where jam bands "aside from what's left of The Dead and Phish" will be playing 18,000 plus venues but Umph is very talented and I hope they continue doing what they do, although I don't see them taking it to the "next level." There are plenty of us out here that enjoy your music. Good album and looking forward to this weeks Colorado run.

One more thing as far as the new album. It's Good. I'm not a Phish basher by any means and will be attending at least one of the reunion shows, but the studio albums put out in the later years were nothing to write home about. There was some truth that Phish was making a living off playing YEM a thousand times over. Lets be honest. How many people excited about the Phish reunion are pumping Round Room on the Ipod. These guys just put out a solid new album so I'm hoping they are still in the peak of creating good music. Who knows? Maybe I'm wrong about making it to the "next level." I can remember the early nineties when I was a walking billboard for Phish and my non-jam band friends were clueless as to who they were. Now look. They are a monster! One of the biggest American touring bands ever! Sometimes you have to watch what you wish for cuz it ruined it!

this is not something that only occurs with jambands, most bands that we know of write good material early in their career. nothing suprising. most bands don't write better as they get on in years, because they've already explored their creative juices, only thing that happens over time is that they get more introspective and corny. mantis has some corniness but still some good music that will be killer live.

^^ I have been to plenty of Umphreys shows and have yet to see a fight or "rowdy prick kids," in attendance. Even if this were true I would still take my chances in order to see one of the best live bands touring right now. It would also be a good idea if everyone stops comparing Umphrey's and any other jam band for that matter to Phish or the Dead. There's a reason Mantis wont ever live up to Junta, there two different bands playing two different styles of music. Thankyou, that is all.

Finkle- Are you kidding me? First Dead show in 90, fight breaks out in parking lot over drugs. Stray away from that scene because I realize its not all about peace and love. Start diving hard into Phish shortly after. Phish by 2ooo- Wake up to a girl who was raped in the campground at Deer Creek-Coke and Heroin readily available in lot. Alpine- Guy runs off with bong he didn't pay for and gets pounded to the ground for doing so. Watch someone get beat to a pulp for bunk acid and then sprayed in face with "I'm guessing good acid." Hauled off in ambulance lifeless. These are just some of my fond memories of Dead and Phish shows. This is what happens when these bands are larger than life and you have a bunch of losers following them around that don't give a shit about the music Dude. It's unfortunate but true. I'll take an intimate Umphrey's setting any day over witnessing some of these things with the big traveling bands. Truthfully, the most respective fan base I've witnessed on a large scale are the Spreadheads- Probably because its an older crowd but not my cup of tea.

I like the new album overall. I've never been huge on UM studio albums, though. They've always had to grow on me. I got hooked on UM by seeing them live. They are insane live and in my opinion one of the most talented bands touring today. They've always been dead on when I've seen them and destroy the "poppy" label that they often get stuck with. I understand they're not for everybody, but I can't wait to see 'em again in Asheville in Feb. and hope to hear some of the new album live.

First of all I have not heard Mantis yet...but as others on here have stated, UMPH does their best work live. You cannot listen to Anchor Drops and tell me that the potential of those songs had been reached. I fully expect that to be the case with this album.

I did catch the 30th and 31st of the New Years Stand. These guys are doing extraordinary things right now, least of which was seamlessly incorporating musical LEGENDS Stanley Jordan and Joshua Redman into their sets. My biggest bitch about UMPH is that they had a full choir on the 31st, and after they blew the entire crowd away with Amazing Grace>Glory>With a little help from my friends (Joe Cocker Version)...they come back with Kris singing U2's (yes, that U2) "I still haven't found what I'm looking for." Talk about a sick effing sense of humor. At least I hope that they were joking. Because I definitely I threw up in my mouth.

And all of these people that say, "I liked Umphreys BEFORE the band changes"...I really do not know what to say. I guess that it truly does take all kinds because this band is NOWHERE without Jake and Kris. Period.

So Umphrey's...might I for all Arkansans and Wakarusans say...GET BACK TO MULBERRY MOUNTAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You guys know that you want to play on that big, beautiful stage under those Ozark skies.

The big beef I have with half of you people is you are analyzing the people that follow these bands instead of the bands themselves. I've met jerks at Panic shows, Umphrey's shows, Bisco shows, Cheese shows...but I'm not going to see a crowd, I'm going to see a band. If you people honestly think Umphrey's suck because some dude tried to hit on your girlfriend, you should just drink another beer, take another toke, listen to Umphrey's blow the roof off and chill the hell out. Hey mudbuddy11,

I'm going to go ahead and make the assumption that you are considering UM a third tier jam band. In all seriousness, what bands take up the first two tiers? Who do you listen to? I'm just curious as to your tastes.

I've heard a few of the songs and liked them, I plan on downloading the album soon, hopefully the rest is good. these are great guys that always try to put on a great show. i personally like them a lot, and they are just as talented as anyone out there. if you don't like them fine, but some of these posts are garbage. you sound like an awesome music fan mudbuddy11, i mean you must know more about jambands than anyone out there. honsetly, your post might be the dumbest piece of crap i've ever read on this site, and that's saying a lot because there is a lot of dumb shit written on here. you go to your REAL shows and keep your dumbass comments away from articles like this one.

You know what really gets me. There are tons of reviews and articles on jambase and generally the bands you are not interested in you would pass up. For instance, I'm not the biggest Panic fan out there but certainly don't take the time to post a negative comment about them. Input about a show or album from someone that actually LIKES the band means more than the guy who just says they suck. Maybe you don't like the album and you are a casual Umph fan. That is better criticism than the "they suck" guy. People truly don't have anything better to do for sure.

Why so much hate on this website? Time and time again I have read an article only to see so many people bashing each other. Music is meant to bring people together, not tear them apart. So what if someone doesn't like UM or any other band for that matter. We should all respect each other's opinions and just enjoy life and music. The world's going to shit right now and for many of us music is the only hope left, bad or good, so everyone just groove on and enjoy life.

i think NittyGritty said it best that we all on jambase agree that phish is the greatest band of all time. i dont know why that keeps cracking me up. but seriously, after reading this article it does kinda make me want to go out and buy the new UM and that to me is good writing. anyone who has taken a close listen to the band live or studio knows they are talented musicians who probably deserve to not have to get real jobs. i gave them a live chance once at a latenite vegoose show and came away a bit let down, not because of their lack of the jams, but because i was expecting more of a halloween themed late nite spectacle (1am-4am in Vegas Halloween weekend which was 10/28/07). I was even more disappointed when i read a review of their true Halloween show that following tuesday which described a huge Halloween spectacle. So 10/31 fell on a tuesday. but why couldnt the Halloween spectacle have at least begun Saturday late night in Vegas when i showed up in a effin costume?? my impression was UM is a bunch of Halloween bah-humbuggers but clearly they had it in them a few days later on the technical Halloween night. all right, ill quit my bitching and go buy this album.

Before anyone makes a superficial judgement on the soundscape of this album, please do some homework. This album was not an excercise in writing an album that can be played as background music while a bunch of flower children puff or survive the later hours of an acid trip. This album is made for intimate, personal, headphone listening.

While many of these songs do have enormous potential for live experimentation, they are meant to be part of an album(an art form that can and has been easily lost in the jam community). This album is NOT Hoist. It is not meant for easy listening. This album is much more in the vein of artists like Yes and King Crimson. This is an excercise in precise composing, voicing, producing, and arranging. This is not an album boasting the talent of six separate musicians, but rather it is a collaboration of six grown, mature, and masterful minds to create a work of art.

Lastly, to the ever-growing number of people on this site who take it upon themselves to assail this band. Please, give it a rest. If progressive rock is not your cup of tea, don't listen to it. I have yet to hear an intelligent argument mounted against the rise and talent of this band. In fact, an intelligent and informed musical ear would ascertain that, at the very least, this band is extremely talented and continues to showcase this talent and mature gracefully. Arguments like "Their music is nothing but choppy riffs and 80's metal" are so misinformed. Their affinity for precise changes and abrupt redirections is about their desire to explore different genres, tones, and soundscapes. They make it their M.O. to not noodle, not over-indulge. Just because this band tours within the jamband circuit does not mean that you should judge them by the same criterion that you judge Phish or Widespread Panic. They are completely different bands with entirely different approaches to both studio and live performance.

Please, check your ill-informed, undereducated insults at the door. This band, whether you like what they do or not, is undeniably talented.

See all of you on the road.

cool underwater shot. i love this group (um) so much. they're wicked fun and technically the strongest rock-jam band playing now; 3 hrs of entertainment for under $30, please haters SHUT UP! i also appreciate how um doesn't get political and pretentious like so many other artists.

On Phish: i have many many hours of this band + side projects. if they don't release some NEW material before march shame on them. at least have a new disc this year or an announcement. they keep pushing us phans to buy old material. F that. i don't care if its on the same level as 'undermind'; release a new effing disc, otherwise whats the point?

so anything that doesn't involve a 10 minute jam is now to be considered "poppy" or "commercial"... i don't get it man... a lot of people have extremely different complaints about umph's... either they're too poppy or radio friendly, or their shit is too complex and people can't wrap their head around it... some people say they jam too long and lose their attention, others say they change it up too much when they get into a groove... all we can really do is completely ignore the haters, this website is the only place they have any sort of voice, so just thumbs them down and make their idiocracy disappear.

Mantis is not a great album, but it is solid (a "B" in my book). Sometimes the album sounds too "produced" for my tastes and sometimes I think the studio effects work well. e.g. The strings in Mantis (the song) are awesome. However, I don't like UM for their studio albums and I think that most of the songs on this album will be sick in the live setting.

you people are never going to get another anchor drops because they CANT MAKE IT. there are some bands that can redo that kind of magic maybe once or twice...not umphreys tho. Local band does ok is not a local band anymore. they will always be a good band , amazing musicians. but ull never get the anchor drops vibe back...they just dont have it. Cinninger shouldnt sing or write lyrics...but he does....they shouldnt have put safety in numbers out but they did....it turned fans off...but its what they had in them musically. And as for mantus im sure it will be further and further away as they attempt to make something amazing. Umphreys turned me off when they quit being funky and crisp and I quit being able to relate to the music. They will always be an amazing band and live show though. THings change. end of story

This band keeps it interesting and refreshing everytime I see them. It's ridiculous the amount of talent within the group and the way they shift in and out of every musical style I can think of. Just because a band draws a bigger and diverse crowd and they aren't afraid to try new things DOES NOT mean they sold out. And the best things is...THEIR LIVE SHOW TICKETS ARE ACCESSIBLE AND REASONABLY PRICED, imagine that. (cough cough Dead Tour)

Why is the UM crowd so completely paranoid about someone not liking UM? There are plenty of bands I like that other poeple dont, and you know what? I dont care. And it's not a "screw you" I dont care, it's a "hey, thats cool" I dont care. When someone says they dont like UM, it's not a personal insult, its a comment about the music and the band. This is an open space, where anyone with any kind of opinion can participate in a conversation thread. For those who beleive in censorship, dont forget, your 'advasaries' are merely excercising the same liberties that allow you to enjoy the band in the first place and then get on a chat board and talk about it.

I will never understand most people who post on this site. So much negativity, especially when it comes to Umphrey's. If you don't like them, don't comment on them! It's that simple. I don't like Bisco or STS9 but I don't bash them. They do what they do and I respect that. People seem to hate on these guys for being different. There's no reason to bring up Phish, The Dead, or Panic when talking about Umphrey's. They aren't even in the same vein of music as them. Yes, they have insane jams live but they aren't really jam band. They've always been a Prog-rock band in my eyes, and in my opinion the best since the heyday of prog-rock in the 70's.

Umphrey's will never appeal to everyone. I think their music goes over most peoples heads. Their heaviness and complexity seems to turn a lot of people off. These are the things that pulled me towards this band. 2x2 was the first Umphrey's song I heard and I was immediately hooked. Don't get me wrong, I love the upbeat, funky side of Umphrey's too but its the heavy shit that grabs me.

I know I'll get a lot of shit for saying this but i think Mantis is as good as, if not better than, anything they have done in the past. It took them 2 years to craft this album and it was totally worth the wait. My only gripe is that Wizard Burial Ground didn't make the cut. I love the direction this band is heading and I can't wait to hear what these guys have in store for us over the next few years.

I know it seems cliche to say this, but why cant everyone in this "community" just get along. Im not as big into Tribe and Bisco but I cant say that i havent had some songs by them touch me. Circus is one of my favorite melodies ive ever heard..What im saying is. why bash any band that you dont like? we should all hope the best for the bands that keep improvisational music driving. I love UM and i love Phish...why should i have to pick sides depending on what the crowds are like? its all good music. theres no denying that.
