Fleet Foxes: SNL Vids

When we first heard that Fleet Foxes were doing Saturday Night Live, we were like, "No shit?" It made sense, but it was still a bit surprising. A year ago no one really knew of these enchanting beardcore folk bards; now they're rocking SNL, magazine covers and serious Best of 2008 props. If nothing else, it's a testament to the power of a great record (self-titled, released June 3, 2008 on Sub Pop) and the buzz it can generate with the Internet. If you missed them over the weekend, here they are doing "Mykonos" and "Blue Ridge Mountain."

Robin Pecknold definitely resembles Jim James' vocals on a few of Fleet Foxes songs. Listen to any MMJ ballad and you will most certainly hear the resemblance.

Absolutely loving this band - their music fills my heart w/ warmth and brings me back to much earlier days discovering magic in my folks record collection. Pecknold sorta resembles Chris Robinson in those SNL vids - sight not sound wise.

the vocal harmonies are off the charts.....for a second these guys conjured thoughts of some classic CSN stuff

Thanks Jambase for putting this together...I was telling everybody to check out SNL this past Saturday, when even I missed it. I work at Barnes and Noble and for the first time, we play something that's actually new and good. I heard these guys and at first, I thought one of their songs had harmonies like the Flaming Lips, then on another song I thought they were The Shins, then on another they sounded like My Morning Jacket...they are great and bring a lot of influences together and take a Crosby, Stills, and Nash to a whole modern level that's warm and fun...check them out

The lead singer looked sooooo nervous at the end of the show. Did anybody else notice that?

i saw this on SNL, and i had never heard of them. kinda one of those "it sounds familia" kinda bands. i went and got the discography and i absolutely love it. i will say that on some tracks i did kinda get the jim james feel but they're nothing alike. hope to see these guys soon. i really dig what they're doing

I'll admit I recognized a similarity between Jim James and Pecknold, I can't get over the fullness of their sound. On just about every song on their LP and EP. Awesome stuff.

why all the negative votes for posting the obvious? This guy sounds like jim james. anyone with ears who has heard my morning jacket would have to be half a tard to not agree.

i love my morning jacket and i'm slowly falling in love with fleet foxes.

It just seems like someone is giving negative votes because they can't come to terms with the fact that thier favorite new band sounds like someone else.

You know what else? they sound like C.S.N & Y., the beach boys and simon and garfunkel.

^hotchkiss ,you are mistaking the overbearing use of reverb on the vocals for voice similarity. Both MMJ and Fleetfoxes wash their vocals in an enormous amount of reverb, almost like they're singing in a tin can. While the effect is at once warm and endearing, over the course of a whole album it starts to wear thin. I myself commented recently (not here) on the similarty to MMJ, but only in the production department. Both voices are indeed unique. And supremely talented.

They sound like a Northwest Sub Pop Beach Boys. I can hear some similarities to Mr. James, but I don't think they are trying to rip sounds.

This was quite a surprise when I turned on SNL and the Fleet Foxes, one of my new favorite bands, was playing. I think this band has got a sick original sound that is completely unique. Can't wait to catch my first show to put it all into perspective.

no, not mistaking the liberal use of reverb on the vocals as the similarity. It's the tone, pitch and vocal technique that are similar. definetly not a rip off. i'm not saying it's a bad thing.

I absolutely love these guys and i am overjoyed that they are getting the recognition they deserve. I do agree that the Robin Pecknold sounds like Jim James but there is nothing wrong with that, the bands are both quite different and both very good. I don't think thats a bad thing. Also I read an interview with Pecknold where he talks about his shyness, he is extremely shy and gets nervous on stage so that's why he looks all disjointed at the end of the show.
