PHISH RETURNS TO THE CLIFFORD BALL ON MARCH 3
7-DVD BOXED SET FEATURES THE BAND'S ENTIRE TWO DAY PERFORMANCE
INCLUDING A DVD FILLED WITH BONUS FOOTAGE

Last fall, when members of Phish — guitarist Trey Anastasio, drummer Jon Fishman, bassist Mike Gordon, and keyboardist Page McConnell — announced the band would take the stage again for the first time in four years, tickets for the three-night stand at Hampton Coliseum in Virginia sold out immediately. This month, the band announced additional dates, marking a return to the road for one of the most successful touring bands of all time.

Rhino starts the celebration a few days before Phish's highly anticipated shows with a 7-DVD collection documenting The Clifford Ball, a landmark concert event that drew more than 70,000 fans to upstate New York in August 1996. It was the largest concert event of 1996 in North America and set the tone for festivals including Bonnaroo and Coachella. Ray Waddell summed it up in Billboard: "Bonnaroo is a direct descendant of Phish's one-band festival extravaganzas like Clifford Ball... Bonnaroo launched with — and maintains — the same self-contained, immersive experience as the Phish events, as well as its laissez-faire treatment of fans and spirit of community."

The Clifford Ball will be available from Rhino Records March 3 for a suggested list price of $99.99. The Clifford Ball was the first of six two-day spectacles the band staged, which included The Great Went a year later, followed by Lemonwheel in 1998 and culminating in Big Cypress — the largest ticketed event in the world for the millennium celebrations, drawing over 90,000. The Clifford Ball was held in Plattsburgh, New York, at a decommissioned air force base, during which Phish played two marathon concerts including multiple guests.

The DVDs contain all three sets and encores the band played each night, along with bonus footage—more than 9 hours of live improvisation. The bonus DVD presents choice rarities including a soundcheck from August 15, their "Flatbed Jam" performed in the wee hours of the morning on the back of a truck, an interview with longtime Phish artist Jim Pollock, interviews with Phish and more.

The first night provided fans with a preview of several tracks that would appear a few months later on Billy Breathes, the band's eighth studio album. During the show, the foursome convened on a small stage, where they performed acoustic versions of then-unreleased tracks: "Waste," "Talk" and "Train Song." On the second night, nearly half of the songs featured have never appeared on a studio album, including "Runaway Jim," "Wilson," "Punch You In The Eye" and "Harpua." Between the first and second set, an orchestra played selections by Debussy, Ravel and Stravinsky as a glider plane flew over in synch with the music as the sun set.

You can pre-order The Clifford Ball here.

Damn, i woke up the other day and realized that its prolly a bad idea for me to go to Hampton... but every day since then stuff keeps happening that makes me re-think it (i.e. playin phish songs on my guitar, phish comes up on my ipod, seeing articles like this). All these things conjure up that old feeling that only phish brings, which makes it all the harder. That said, i really think its a dumb idea for me to go at this time (not gonna explain the situation, but if u must know ill tell u offline). I have 1 friday and 2 sundays, best offer gets it

To me...the Clifford ball was when Phish fully arrived as a band that could rule arenas and kick major @ss doing it. It is arguable that it all started to got downhill after 1996. There was definitaly great music being made by the boys in 1997 and 1998...but they didn't really have to prove themselves at that point. As we all know....when Phish and Trey in particular doesn't feel like he needs to prove himself and work hard, the music suffers. If you wanna see Phish at their best....check out this festie.

I have a VHS from the CB that I acquired years ago that appeared to be professionally done. I wonder if any of that footage will appear on disc 7? Regardless, I am so psyched to relive those fond....blurred memories of the greatest festival I'll ever experience.

I wonder if they are just going to start selling the videos that they play on the big screens at shows. I've been saying they should do this for years. It seems like that's what Walnut Creek is. They hyped it as this great show with a fantastic natural light show but you never even see it on the DVD. It's just a feed from a few fixed cameras. It's a good show musically but not a great DVD. It seems like they may just be slowly releasing all of this stored footage, so as not to saturate the market.

Rhino? I didn't know they were with them. It looks like they really are handing lots of responsibilities over to outside parties, which I think is good. These guys are getting old, no need to add more things to their plate.

When I signed up f/ the summer lottery, this was offered at the end. I bought it, it was offered for $79.99 glad I got it then... I graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh 1993 and I had a fried who had been in the AF at that base when it was opened. So I knew my way around the layout, the city and the college. Mt. biked every morning to the college gym showers, then to the store and back on site. That was probably the best time I ever had a a Phish show!! Lost one of my friends on the way in, traffic was sick, about 10 cars wide worth of lines. He got out cause the car was closing in on him (he dropped too soon) and he started wandering. He walked about 6 cars ahead of us, turned around and saw 100s of headlights beaming at him. He couldn't find us, ended up sleeping under a 4x4 for the night (sandals, shorts and t-shirt, w/ temps down in the mid-60s) brrrr. Found him wandering the next morning... memories!!!! Can't wait to start more on 3/6!!! Peace...

I too have been on Phish overload. This is cool, psyched to see it.

And I'd just like to take this time to vent for a second...Rolling Stone called Phish the most important band of the nineties. Yet a couple of months ago when Phish announced the Hampton shows (a.k.a. the reunion) Rolling Stone gave them a PARAGRAPH in their latest news page. I was sort of outraged to be honest. How can that be?

Also, why the hell is Fishman so underrated?

I've been listening to this for a while off of ETree. Actually, it's been living in my cd player for a while now. Best Lizards I've ever heard, and the Mike's - Simple - Contact - Weekapaug is as good as it gets. And Ben and Jerry come out on Brother. If I didn't own this already, I'd pay for it. It's that good.

I can't wait to see the Antelope on DVD. If I remember correctly, I think that's when they brought that lady out and she hung from the rope and Trey was just staring at her...the faster she spun the faster he played the guitar. Am I remembering this correctly? Oh man, sweet stuff!

Death to "deathtonoobs422". Well said beadiamondsomday... everyone on Earth was at one point a "noob", just like we were all children at one point. Some of us haven't done much maturing. And I'm sure Trey, your "GOD", would want to kill people who haven't heard his music, instead of introducing phish's AMAZING sound to a new audience, therein createing an even larger fanbase. A fanbase that includes more than 90s snobbish PhishHEADS that think they are the only ones who "deserve" to hear Phish because they saw them in the 90s? Sorry you blew all your money or tour and grilled cheese and only have "94-96" (Cuz it all fell apart after that) to hold onto. You guys are beat and the band would be ashamed of you Beatsters.
