Joe Russo Can't Be Stopped

Joey is definitely part robot. That dude can play things that no normal human would even think of. But for all of his technical ability, he always breaks it down and plays the song. That's the highest compliment I can give a drummer. He's not playing some pre-rehearsed beat with hot, flashy fills. He's playing a song, and we can all tell the difference.

Joe Russo by Sam Friedman
Benevento added, "[Working on other projects is] really good for inspiration. Joe has been inspired by playing with Tommy and Scott Metzger in American Babies and he's learning about music in a different way, doing other stuff and interacting with other folks. And it's the same thing with me. I'm playing with different drummers and bass players, writing different music, going on tour and experimenting. The other day we went to rehearsal and talked about what we wanted to do with all of the song ideas that have been brewing. Anything Joe picked up from American Babies, he's going to take that into our rehearsal space, just like I'm bringing in more experimental stuff, like the toys and samples and loops. We're combining our inspirations [and] it definitely shows."

As Russo sipped on his coffee, talking about the negative repercussions that came from being affiliated with Phish, Marc Friedman, bassist for The Slip and Mr. Davis, knocked on the glass window to let Joe know it was time for his sound check. Before he left, a post-performance interview was arranged. "I don't want to end this on such a sour note," he said.

From backstage, while Davis rocked a sold out house, Russo's narrative took a strikingly more positive tone than our previous conversation.

"The vibe with me and Marco now is so on-the-same-page," he says. "It took a while to get back there, but we're so happy to be back there, [to where] it's effortless and fun. We had a four-man crew for a band with two guys and so much bullshit. Now, it's just me and Marco in the van, loading our own shit and enjoying it. No tour manager. We got rid of everything. We're in control of what we want to do. We've got a booking agent who helps us out, but other than that we deal with all the dumb, day-to-day shit. But, we know it's getting done. We are fully involved and happy to do it."

The more Russo talked about where The Duo is today, the more apparent it became that their time off will effect where they take things in the future.

Russo & Benevento by Sam Friedman
"American Babies was like my away time," Russo says. "It was a cleansing of the palette. I learned a lot from that gig. I'd always played a certain type of music a certain type of way. I would say years ago [my playing was] extremely bombastic, a little naive, and a little overwhelming at times. [What I discovered] playing with guys like Chris Hartford, Tommy and Aaron [Freeman] [aka Gene Ween] is that the ego gets removed from the drumming. You're there to support the singer and the song, and I've found such a wonderful bliss through that. I feel whole now. I can go out with Marco and do this crazy thing, or I can play with Aaron or Tommy and I can sit there and play something so simple it makes a song beautiful."

Scott Metzger (guitar) of American Babies, as well as RANA fame, spoke of Russo's newfound sense of instrumental modesty.

"Besides that weird carnival freak, arms behind the back stretch that he does, what sets him apart from other drummers I've played with is the taste factor," says Metzger. "Joey is definitely part robot. That dude can play things that no normal human would even think of. But for all of his technical ability, he always breaks it down and plays the song. That's the highest compliment I can give a drummer. He's not playing some pre-rehearsed beat with hot, flashy fills. He's playing a song, and we can all tell the difference."

The lessons learned by Russo range well beyond the stage, too.

Joe Russo by Josh Miller
"If I'm bitching that I have a bill to pay, I try to be thankful [about the fact] that I have a place to live. Just bringing it down to the simplest thing, and on top, I have this gravy of being able to play music for a living. It's like I'm a complete asshole if I'm bitching about anything," Russo says.

Looking forward, Russo says 2009 will see the return of the Benevento/Russo Duo in a big way. Both halves of The Duo have been working on material for a third album, and Russo said they're hoping not to do any outside gigs in March and "just write for the whole month, and come back to this Duo thing with a new attitude."

As for the change in attitude, the adjustments couldn't be clearer.

"The last four years, I feel like I've grown up a lot in every way - personally, emotionally, spiritually and musically. I've tried to be more positive, which is something I need to credit Marco with. That guy always has a smile on his face, and it's infectious if you want it to be. And for a long time I fought it, and now I'm in a place where it can be that easy. Everything is simple," offers Russo reflectively. "As long as you've got your family, your health and the gift to play music - which I took very much for granted - I realize I'm the luckiest guy in the world, and I try to acknowledge that every day and not let any of the bullshit get in the way."

Joe Russo will perform with his Quartet on 2/13 at NYC's Sullivan Hall and with A Big Yes... and a small no on 2/20 at Union Hall. Also look for him on tour with Gene Ween Band starting this week. Complete Russo tour dates available here.

Great article, well written. Big fan of the Duo, however I have never seen Marco and Russo together. Individually I saw Russo with Electron and I caught Marco with Mathis and Barr. I am really ready to catch some straight up Duo. Also looking for some Slip shows in '09.

wouldn't they be working on a fifth album? The self-titled album and Darts do exist and are sick.

I agree, great article on a great drummer and a great duo. Have to admit, I have more respect for Joe Russo with the American Babies after reading this article. Saw them last year in Philly before Umphrey's and they weren't doing it for me. It seemed too simple for him, but now that I have this perspective it makes total sense.

I really cannot wait for the new album and the corresponding tour!

Every time I see Russo play it puts a great big smile on my face, seeing his arms flailing around in that monkey-like fashion, all the while achieving stunning musical coherence. Met the guy a few years ago at a gig in Hoboken and chatted with him about music and such, really nice guy and totally down to earth. Its rare that a guy like that will take the time to just chill out and converse with fans like they're on the same level

Great Article. Always had a lot of respect for Russo's talent since I first saw the Duo a couple years ago (loved them from the start). One of my fav. drummers out there playing right now. Looking forward to a 2009 show or two.

Easily one of the best drummers on the planet. Seen the duo a bunch of times along with GRAB and Bustle shows, this guy is unstoppable. He plays the piano with one hand and keeps insane beats going with the other.

You're right, SkiBum, Russo is a down to earth, friendly guy who is willing to chat with fans, which is refreshing. I'm not one to casually throw out "Best ever" of anything but he is one of my favorite drummers of our generation. The Duo material is great and he really shines in Bustle. Seldom, if ever, do you see someone be able to cover Bonham as well as Joe does. He nails it every damn time. Well written article, Andrew, thank you very much for this.

PS> I just saw Bustle in Denver a few weeks ago, Joe's hand was definitely hurting him. Not sure how he hurt it, I assumed it was during a "Moby Dick" solo w/o sticks since he's not one to hold back. His second set effort was so impressive I'm still riding the high from witnessing it.

I remember a free show the Dou did in Philly at Ritenhouse Square circa 2004. Joe was gettin' down so hard he smashed his lefthand crash cymbal right off the stand. I was standing at the tiny rented soundboard helping the hired soundman get the mix right as he was unfamiliar with them (it was a free show so The Dou gave their regular crew the night off) and he saw that I was familiar with their sound so he asked me to help, when I see one of Joe's cymbals go flying up in the air and then crash to the stage in front of his set. At first waiting for a crew member to run onstage and fix it ( I was unaware they had no crew at this point), I eventually ran up there myself and fixed it. After the show we were all laughing about it, he asked me how I knew what to do and I told him not only am I a drummer myself but I was semi-working for moe. at that point and informed them that I would see them a month late at moe.down which they played that year with Mike Gordon, which was their first official show with him other than the Headcount Benefit. Great show and great guys for sure!

GOOD ARTICLE! I can kind of understand where they are coming from. Saw the Duo at the Soapbox in Wilmington. Someone in the crowd said, " Play something cool" Marco said Yeah, Go fuck yourself!.......I could not stop laughing........I bet their dream in life was to play with phish, but they never knew that the fans would only associate them with phish after the fact.....its like you want to be rich and famous, but you don't want the media following you around all the time.....you can't have it one way.

How Joe broke his hand -

(at the bar)

Joe is casually sipping on his beer when a dirty-ass dreadlocked wookie walks up and tells Joe he'll buy him an Appletini if he will play a few Phish songs for him.

Joe replies, "Fuck you hippie."

Wookie says "Well how about I buy you a red-headed slut if you play the entire 'Shine' album from beginning to end?"

Joe says "Come on wookie lets go outside, let's go, let's go, let's go outside."

Wookie says "Can I trade you a heady organic vegan carne asada burrito for a killer version of Tweezer Reprise?"

At this point Joe simply had had enough and started pounding on the aformentioned wookie with his drumsticks. However, one drum stick got stuck in the wookie's shitlocks and the wookie fell over. Joe fell over with the wookie and landed on his arm which made a loud "snap."

With his catlike reflexes Joe grabbed his ride cymbal and sliced the dirty wook's head clean off with it.

The End

i love how groups the duo, the slip, and surprise me mr. davis are perfectly content with their small group of completely loyal fans, and how they really don't seem to be too interested with the idea of breaking through to a higher level of popularity like phish or umphrey's

i'll be happy if i can see the duo in small clubs for the rest of my life

Please tell me there's someone on these boards that saw the Re:Generation Duo set as the sun rose. I've never seen a drummer get down like that. He was possesed by the soul of Bonzo, an unholy rythmic devil. That's the day he became my favorite drummer, this guy is unbelieveable. I caught the Duo set at Langerado 08 but the rawness just wasn't there. Just as I was beginning to think it was a one time fluke I saw Younger Brother at Camp Bisco last year and Jeebus he was a madman. The crazy thing is it was a style of drumming 100% opposite of what I saw at Re:Gen, and just as nasty. Russo is the man, whenever I'm putting together dream projects in my head he's on the kit, nobody else will do (save for some zombified drummers of days past). A five for the best Jambase Article I've seen in awhile, not many warrant more than a skim nowadays.

FU RUSSO. SO you broke up your band to get rid of the hippies. WHat did they do to you joe? ASk you to Jam! Wait you don't have a singer, so all you CAN do is jam. All you brooklyn shmucks think your better than everyone else. Indie rock is crap, The fans care more about the clothes and the look then the music. Hipies appreciate musicianship. Go your pathetic. I will never go see you again moron. Go play an empty club and pretend your a starving artist. Your way too fat to make it in Brooklyn anyway.

Oh please, with your defense of the "hippies" and your silly Brooklyn rant. Russo is telling his side of the story. What kind of dickhead goes to a Duo show and yells out for a Phish tune? That kind of crap would bum out the Phish guys as much as it would piss off the Duo. If you appreciate musicianship, then you'd have empathy for the artist's creating it. In which case, you wouldn't get all huff puffy on message boards about Russo's opinion.

skitterbrain, Im right there with you. Regardless of his musical preferences this man has an enthusiasm for music that is intense to say the least. The duo at re:generation was one of the most powerful acts I have seen to the day. I hope they are able to recreate that energy because thats what music is all about.
