HELL YEAH! what an epic show to ring in the new years. Afterwards, my friends and I left to goto the B.B.King lounge to check out the Duo and the Slip (as surprise me mr. davis) play from 1:30 - 5 in the morning. Just a quality night of music in the NYC

8apeach....although I respect what you have to say. I disagree. I was there at MSG for New Years and had never heard the band before (My GF dragged me there). I gotta say I was impressed. They put on a good show and was really suprised how full MSG was. I didn't know how much of a fan base MMJ had.

Very nice shots Dave! What else can be said..the sickest band of the year tore MSG down for new years! I've been listening to the killer recording from archive all what a show. the covers were off the map. the energy and the playing were spot on. kudos to America's (current) greatest rock band!

The show ripped so hard, but another thing I was really impressed with was the crowd. I'd never been to an MMJ show and I had no idea what their fanbase was like. The Garden was packed and everyone I met was different and equally chill. From preppy kids to hippies, from NYC banker types to sweet ass dudes like me. Very diverse, very devoted, very rockin' crowd. What a night!

I said gawd damn! That was the best MMJ concert I've ever been too, they played everything I wanted to hear including all those old soul songs from the 70s. When they opened with Move On Up by Curtis Mayfield I think I jumped like 6 feet in the air, I love Curtis Mayfield. They played 2 of 3 my favorite live songs Cobra and Touch Me Pt. 2 (Steam Engine being the one they didn't play) but they made up for it by playing material from most of they're albums.

This show was definitely my favorite MMJ show, including all the Roo shows, including last year's awesome Roo in the rain...and really guys...I might just put this show in my top 5 ever! I didn't stop dancing for about 5 hours I think, and I know I couldn't even leave to pee during the first 3 hour set! My husband wasn't convinced until this one, but I think I could start a MMJ touring club and follow them all around the world! Extremely talented musicians w/ a great appreciation for the old stuff, and yes, they attract a very diverse, yet very genuine and cohesive crowd. Best time in New York ever!

Thanks for the photos!

Looks like it was an awesome party! I like the outfit change. I don't care what others think, but it's wonderful to see this band evolve into something this grand without the help of MTV. Sure they've had exposure with late night television and only a few major magazines, but to be able to rise to the top as much as they have in as just a few years, they deserve a bit of credit in my book. I'm proud of them. I just wish that Jambase could've had a journalist cover this show to describe the whole scene along with these fantastic pics. It looks like it was one hell of a party!

This show blew me a way. What really amazed me was how far people came for the show. The folks in front of me were from GA, the folks behind me OH, and next to me NE. James didn't even address the crowd as New York, but rather thanked everyone for traveling so far. MMJ fans went all out... As did MMJ

NYE can be more about spectacle and less about music but still looks like everyone had a wonderful time. Why people have to harsh on it just makes me wonder how much spare time they must have on their hands... no time to hate people, it's 2009 already

You know...w/o a crowd that cool, something like "Islands in the Stream" might not have worked, but the crowd was just that cool. None of these bitchy bisco kids! Just fun lovin' dancin' machines! Corey of corse I'm not saying that a MMJ show is better than Phish in 95 from MSG....Those are two totally different things. SCI and Moe. still suck. MMJ would chew up and spit out both of those lame ass bands I've become more open minded since middle school..I guess your still wishing you were 25 in 1995...plenty of good music out there now days, and its safe to say that most of it is not in the "Jamband realm" Maybe you should put away the tapes and listen to some different music, I have and its not all that bad.

Corey, glad to see the apology. Good to see the conversations as opposed to the bashing from everyone. We're all welcome to our own tastes. As another one whose seen Phish, the Dead(both with and W/O JG) SCI, Umps, and MOE (i'll be in NYC 2/14-2/15) and on and on and on, .... For many, many, many years, I think you should be more open to MMJ. There show at RCH in NYC this past summer was among the best performances I've ever, ever, ever .... seen/heard!

BEST NEW YEAR'S EVER!! Hate all you want on the covers but there's nothing like some old school dirty funk on NYE to get the dance party going! Mostly everyone dressed up in fancy dresses and suits or tuxes and whatnot, the crowd was awesome, the energy was crazy, everyone was dancing and singing the whole night, they played 35 songs, they had Nicole Atkins, Will Johnson, and an entire horn section... what is there not to love?! My 6th MMJ show and they just keep getting better... wish i could relive it! The archive recording is pretty decent too.

There is no describing what this show was like...unless you were there....I could care less about all the jammy moe phish heads...MMJ flat out ROCK. This is one of the best bands our generation has seen. Period. If you want to go see a band noodle for a half hour and that is your thing great, more power too you but if you just want to see a band tear it up, give 110% on everything they do and make it fun as hell for their dedicated fanbase go see MMJ. This is the show i'll remember above all, and i've been going to shows for about 18 years now and seen every big jamband and any other kind of band out there including the Dead with Jerry. I'm not making comparisons but at some point people are going to realize that MMJ are NOT a jamband. Like someone said above they are a in your face Rock/Soul Band and that is what makes them unique and Awesome.

Ok I don't want to be one of these folks on here just to poo poo someone else's band. Everyone dunks their cookies in their own way and that's cool. I saw MMJ at Edgefield this summer without really knowing their music, they are good musicians and they definitely rock..... but I wasn't blown away. If I had that day back I probably wouldn't have bothered....... They do rock, but blow everyone else out of the water? Cmon......I guess I just weight my opinions on musicianship most heavily on improv and unpredictability.... I guess that's why I'm on this site and I think Phish is the greatest.....

I wish people would stop comparing it to Phish. Its not Phish and they will never be. Nor do they even try to be. MMJ deserves to be written up on here. They are not a jamband but a band that jams. And are damn good at it. Phish '95 was not MMJ at all. MMJ is way deeper and their album reflects our society and generation more than phish ever did. I love phish and have seen almost every Garden show. Phish tried their best to put out an album like MMJ. I wish people would refrain from bashing a band b/c they "are not Phish and never will be". 2008 was a tough year for a lot of people and this was a show that reflected that and brought on a positive message for 2009. song selection and placement was perfect and the best covers imaginable for the moment.

two things: 1. to Kenny g: to think that this music / scene has more than phish did/does .. is past stupid... damn right ignorant. So either your stupid or ignorant.. you're call.

2. i hope all the best that like this stuff. I am critical simply because you all tout this like its the greatest thing since running water. Its not (imo). and i have tried to like it (trust me ... im pretty opened minded when it comes to music. but no good is no good... not deserving all this hype.. is not deserving of all this hype). But you'll have ur opinion (however tilted they may be). And thats great. Just tired of reading about it all over jambase. gets kinda old.

I don't say that I'm not into this band b/c they aren't Phish, I'm not into them b/c I just don't dig it. Maybe I would if Phish had never existed, Then I wouldn't have the same concept of musical ceiling (or lack thereof) and would have a diff opinion of MMJ. I will say that I checked out the NYE show and it's pretty impressive, the energy is great, definitely some nice well played cover selections and I'll pop it in now and again. I don't see myself dl'ing more of their shows though, def no need to have 23 days worth of their music...... Ok I guess I'm a freak but it's only natural to make the comparison.... you can't get all bent about on these boards, maybe if it was an MMJ board..... I'll give em MMJ their due but they def don't "blow everything else out of the water"

real news:

June Phish Date Announced (Briefly)

Earlier today the first show of Phish's rumored summer tour appeared to be confirmed. This morning, the Live Nation site listed a January 30 on sale for a performance by the band on June 18 at the Post-Gazette Pavilion in Burgettstown, PA (the listing was removed a few hours later). This venue is the site of celebrated 7/29/03 show that saw Phish, dip back into its catalog for such songs as "Daniel Saw The Stone," "Camel Walk," "McGrupp" and "Harpua (the show later was released as part of the Live Phish 2003 series). The June 18 performance certainly is compatible with a potential appearance by the band at Bonnaroo over the prior weekend. The full tour may well be announced later this month.
