The Dead to Tour in 2009

From dead.net:

The Dead will be touring for the first time in more than four years, with nearly twenty shows spread across a month from mid-April through mid-May.

The lineup for this edition of The Dead will be the same one that rocked the house at Penn State last fall at the Obama benefit: The Core Four of Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, joined by guitar monster Warren Haynes and RatDog keyboard ace Jeff Chimenti (both veterans of the 2004 Dead "Wave That Flag" tour). The mood of the band for this Spring Fling is way up, so it’s sure to be a great tour!

You know it’s gonna get stranger, so let’s get on with the show...

April 12 Greensboro NC Greensboro Coliseum
April 14 Washington DC Verizon Center
April 15 Charlottesville VA John Paul Jones Arena
April 17 Albany NY Times Union Center
April 18 Worcester MA DCU Center
April 19 Worcester MA DCU Center
April 21 Buffalo NY HSBC Arena
April 22 Wilkes-Barre PA Wachovia Arena @ Casey Plaza
April 24 Uniondale NY Nassau Coliseum
April 25 New York NY Madison Square Garden
April 26 Hartford CT XL Center
April 28 E. Rutherford NJ IZOD Center
April 29 E. Rutherford NJ IZOD Center
May 1 Philadelphia PA Wachovia Spectrum
May 2 Philadelphia PA Wachovia Spectrum

Now I'll first say I'm stoked they are touring and that I'll be able to see them...

BUT HOLY GODDAMN EAST OF THE ROCKIES. 2 west coast dates, with everything else on the east coast? Weak...

But at least I'll be able to catch a show.

They handed out cool looking flyers announcing the tour at the New Years show tonight, a few of the flyers were signed by bobby and phil and randomly handed out to unsuspecting heads. What a sweet way to end a sweet night, 8 hours and 5 sets.

the way I am thinking is that with all these east coast dates for the spring... there is bound to be a summer tour with mid-west and/or west coast dates... this big of an event and only 1 colorado and 2 california shows... no way! but hey I am on the east coast anyway! this is friggin sweet!

Tourfan The Dead played the Hartford Civic Center in 2002 under the name The Other Ones. I was there it was great Susan Tedeschi was dishing out backround vocals. The played Knockin on Heavens Door for the first time since Jerry passed. I can't believe there playing the DCU center in Worcester, MA for 2 nights. I've been to over 50 concerts there's not a bad seat (12,144) in the house. Unfortunetly I'm on the west coast now and have to wait until Shoreline.

I would have been way more interested in seeing this if Steve Kimock was on guitar. Warren Haynes is a great guitarist but he just doesn't do it for me. I'd still be tempted to catch a show at Red Rocks if they play this summer, but I'll definitely be skipping the Pepsi Center. I feel they may be over ambitious with all these arena shows especially since they aren't the only touring game in town these days.

i've never made a negative comment on here before.... but, i'm compelled to ask : WHO THE FUCK ARE THESE JERKYS BAGGING ON THE DEAD? i'm shocked that so many musically challenged & ingnorant people would take the time to write their bullshit negative opinions about a band that pretty much is THE cornerstone in the Jamband community. BUBBA666- Keep your skewed & and infantile views off of OUR Jambase. If you don't want to see 'em, just read the article and let it be. Its pretty antagonistic to write short simple-minded & pointless negative comments about THE Band that has most likely influenced many (if not all, in one way or another) of the Bands on this website. Personally, i think its great to see them out again, and though every experience is circumstantial, - i know this band has it within them to throw it down, more. i just hope i'm there (on most levels) to catch it. PEACE.

My guess is that those upset don't have a few sets in their state. I'm speaking for 100% of the fans when I say I'm thrilled that the Dead is revived and correlating in their best functioning capacity, even though they are avoiding Ohio, as I would too. The best venue for you in Ohio would be Blossom Music Center for the most people to get the experience. So, if you can find room in your hearts, try to wedge in here. Or, a small venue would be fine, too.

This is a mistake. Why would they do a spring tour in some of the crappiest indoor arena across the nation? Be prepared to be hassled in Rosemont. Pass

crazyleggedelbow starstarstarstarstar Thu 1/1/2009 09:01PM
0 Votes Thumbs down! Thumbs up!

Some of these arenas might suck...

The acoustics might blow...

Warren might not be the best replacement for Jerry... Hell there is no replacement for Jerry. I for one would go with Kimock any day of the week when you put him up against Warren. Kimock has skills that are un-fucking-believeable... Warren is great... But Kimock is capable of taking it to that level that Jerry brought us to. The Ratdog shows with Kimock last summer, when they opened for the Allmans, when Mark Karan was in cancer treatment... No offense to Mark, and I'm glad he recovered, but those two shows I saw were so fucking incredible that I will always hail Kimock as the only contender for replacement lead-guitarist of The Dead. However on this tour... Kimock won't be there... But I will be. Maybe not at every single show... I might be outside every show trying to get in... Who knows? ...but I won't be pissed that the guitarist I WANT isn't there... It's not about what I want. It's not about what the crowd wants, It's It's about what the world needs right now. And the world needs love, and The Dead, in any form we can get it.

Warren Haynes is gonna be great with the Dead this tour. A few years have passed since 04 and he is much more connected to Bobby than he was then, so there is trust between them and that will let the music dictate things instead of people. I think this tour will bring back some of the old magic as well as start some new magic. I can't wait.

April is already looking great , not only the Dead tour also Some Kind of Jam, Blossom Blast , Hookah in the Hills and many other festivals in the making. Also , the Dead would be a grate fit at High Sierra festival, since the West Coast is lacking.

best news i have ever heard, i am not fortunate enough to have seen the grateful dead, but i have seen tribute bands and bob and phil many times, i am so excited. i will probably make about 4 or 5 shows hopefully, although i dont not know if i am too thrilled about warren, i would much rather jimmy herring or MK

Warren haters... Better Warren than any other bullshit jerry copy cat. Warren brings great flavor to a band, and is by far better and more diverse than Kimock or Herring. kevin98890. Jimmy Herring can rip it up, but he doesn't know how to shut the fuck up. his solo's have little diversity. Why Warren? He is a great guitar player for a blues band but he ruins the Dead. He plays every lead exactly the same and makes every song he plays a blues song. I would rather see them lacking a second guitar than with Warren. He is talented but lacks diversity. And what would be wrong with a "jerry copy cat" since this is, in fact, the Dead. I'm not knockin on Warren as a musician, but the Dead would sound better with me or any other of the thousands of other no-name jam players on guitar than him. This is still going to be awesome but Warren belongs in Mule and the Allmans, not with the Dead.

I agree Hydrogen. I was hoping JIMMY HERRING or STEVE KIMOCK would get the spot. In my OPINION, I think the decision was more of a business move than a "musical-chemistry" move. More people recognize Warren's name and I think that might generate more ticket sales. Also, the fact that Warren will take on some frontman duties which Jimmy and Steve would not be able to fulfill. But when it comes down to it, this announcement is great news. Unfortunately, we won't have a guitarist to take us "there." Happy and Healthy New Year Everyone...

Ok Porno, you're right, I'm an idiot for talking about music on a music site I should be talking about "Big Titties Whoop Whoop Holla" Maybe you should start your own gangsta-base or whatever poser image you're going for. Warren is a badass he just isn't the best choice for the Dead in my opinion but thanks for proving that you're opinion is irrelevant.

hydrogen i agree with you, why wouldnt you want a jerry copy cat on the dead tour ? i am not saying i have anything against warren, i think he is a great mjusician, but i personally think jimmy or mark karan would be better. i like the solos they both do, and if warren was on tour he might sing some somgs which i am not crazy about him singing.

i think warren haynes is an excellent choice. i mean, when i saw them in 04' Saratoga Springs, he did a reubin and cherise, comes a time, death don't have no mercy, and a shine on you crazy diamond all in one show. give the man a break, he shreads. and that unbroken with phil at mountain jam, sick!!! there are other great guitarists around, but warren can sing and sing great, something that herring, kimock, and trucks doesn't do. he does beef up the vocals. Buffalo will be fun. it's been a long time since the dead/Grateful Dead played indoors in Buffalo (not talking about side bands). Hampton with Phish will be great too!!!!!

So, w/ Warren "playin' in the band" starting in Greensboro on 4/12 does that mean :

a. The Dead will be in live oak, fl for wanee fest on 4/10,11 then haynes hits the road..or

2. dickey will be in F-L-A for the 40th anniversary tour w/o warren?

either way, i'm at both, my second easter w/ the dead in greensboro (other was 3/31/91)

I'd like to hit the MSG & the two at Meadowlands and maybe Hartford. The thing is, I'll be flying up from FL and will need a place to crash. My wife doesn't like the Dead and doesn't want to make a vacation out of it. So, I'm looking to take a few days off from work and take a quick flight up and catch a few shows. Can anybody help a brother out?

Memo to all you losers....stop your whining. Who cares if it's warren or kimock or jimmy, It's gonna be a great tour. I for one am excited. It's been five years since the four remaining members were on stage together, that's twice as long as it has been for phish. Also, dont worry. I'm sure there are more shows (west coast) to be announced. There is no way that they play Worcester Mass. twice and San Francisco once. As for tix being over $100. Thats crazy. I just paid $65 for New Years and that money had to pay Ratdog, Phil and Friends, and Jackie Greene's band.

Wow, The Dead are back, I can't believe it another washed up line-up of artists who's best days were thirty years ago. Now the go and put Warren Haynes up there with them wow, guess the couldn't find someone out there that is less inspiring. Well maybe we will get lucky and this will finally be there last go around. They were great when I saw them 20 years ago, but like all good things they just need to let it go.

I just got lawn tix for Shoreline through Live Nation. $35 face; $53 after the fees. After all the crap of trying to deal with "Tickets Now" - the corporatized and legalized scalping arm of Ticket Master - I found that Live Nation was actually selling face value. This option was not promoted by the band through Dead.net, which is really disappointing. The ticket info area on their site wasn't working this morning so there was no way of knowing about the Live Nation option unless you went through the event area on Jambase. Man, I don't know - it was total crap to deal with this situation, but I feel lucky to have relatively cheap tickets even though the lawn at Shoreline sometimes can suck in terms of views.
