Swingin' wildly like a man who's hoovered a few lines of bathroom cleanser in his time, Grampall Jookabox (aka Indianapolis native David "Moose" Adamson) has the hardtack bite of poor folk blues, drunken garage punk, primitive early Prince and other ramshackle yet brilliant flotsam. Close your eyes and you can see the duct tape and spit holding together whatever contraption is making that noise. Grampall belts 'em out with a mixture of Subtle's Doseone, Grace Jones and Jello Biafra, holding a dark mirror up to his own face and crying, "Every year I get older, I get a little more dumb." There's gut-punch veracity to what Jookabox is pouring that gets ya high but can leave you crying behind the shed, too.
Only Adamson's second long player, Ropechain (released November 4 on Asthmatic Kitty) comes on dirty like early Wu-Tang or Aphex Twin, the residue of peculiar, nostril flaring lubricants all over the mess of wires and plastic making such intoxicatingly unwholesome sounds. It's a splendid disorientation that often dumps one on the dance floor wondering how in the hell they got there. The more you dig in, the more Ropechain gives you. Over time, one begins to wonder if Adamson will stumble onto some great ontological breakthrough or at the very least some boffo new expression to infect the lexicon. For sure, one senses his waters run deep, even as he flings mental poo and baldly funny rocks. But, this is turpentine strong moonshine, and those used to regular bar fare will be rightly taken aback. If, however, you suckle at strange teats with newborn enthusiasm, well, Grampall Jookabox gonna fill you up and good. Grampall points out on the succinctly titled "We Know We Might Be Fucked" (a title rivaled by closer "I'm Absolutely Freaked Out"), but we can choose our soundtrack while we're reamed out. If you like it freaky and lil' rough, Ropechain will suit you to a tee.
Download a free EP with remixes and out-takes to whet yo' appetite over here. This goodie also includes "The Girl Ain't Preggers" from Ropechain, which has its own perverse, baby leaping video game. It's harder than it looks!
Please to enjoy the minimalist video for "Let's Go Mad Together." This is your daily dose of uncut strange, kids.
