Al Di Meola 2009 Tour/Album

PIONEERING JAZZ AND FUSION GUITARIST
HITS ROAD IN EARLY '09 WITH WORLDLY NEW BAND

Al Di Meola by Francesco Cabras
Virtuoso guitarist Al Di Meola will be launching a national tour and releasing a new album in early 2009 with his new project, Al Di Meola and World Sinfonia. Joining a handpicked group of master musicians for both the tour and album, Di Meola makes a turn into the romantic, producing a collection of moving, tango-flavored melodies on La Melodia Live In Milano, available in America for the first time on January 8, 2009, just days before the start of the tour. The album features two songs by tango master Astor Piazzolla, for whom Di Meola admits he has been "carrying a torch" his entire career, as well as one each from Ennio Morricone and Andrea Parodi, and four by Di Meola himself.

"Although the tango developed in Argentina, it was born in the region of Italy where my parents are from, Napoli," Di Meola explains. "This music connects to my roots. As long as I'm playing music, it will be part of my repertoire."

Starting in the 1970s as a member of groundbreaking jazz-fusion group Return To Forever and in his subsequent solo work since, Di Meola has earned a reputation for being technically brilliant with unbelievable chops. For the past several years he has been spent time composing for chamber orchestras in Europe as well as creating blazing guitar solos. With World Sinfonia, Di Meola exhibits a fresh range of emotions in his music in a way that goes beyond pure technique.

How unfortunate that one of the greatest guitar players of all time is also one of the most egotistical jackasses of all time. How come the miserable bastards can always shred so hard?

I saw Di Meola with RTF in 1976 (in Raleigh, NC). With Stanley Clarke, Chic Corea, and Lenny White these guys were way ahead of my ability to comprehend jazz. My head almost caught fire.....I remember smoke. Something was smoking.

Di Meola blows. His lines are cheesy and BORING. Things went downhill for RTF after he joined. Of course, most would say otherwise.

This isn't a new band....DiMeola's been playing with World Sinfonia for at least 9 years and I doubt it's any better now than it was the last time they toured. His albums have been nothing short of shit since Kiss My Axe. And yes, he is a dick. I met him outside a show once and he could not have been more pompous and arrogant. Even after I fed his ego by drooling all over him.

On a lighter note, Land of the Midnight Sun is BAD ASS!!
