Bear Creek was great. The size was perfect, but the weather wasn't.

Some noticeable omissions from the review....Dirty Dozen (rock solid) and Kyle with the Motet (loud as shit but nice and spacey, with lots of guests) set the tone for the weekend on friday. Kang seemed subdued with EO, but Fishman was steady and even got a vacuum solo.

Huge downpour Friday night at P Groove. How about the music hall? Top notch lights (thanks Paul) and some great shows friday (McTuff, Lettuce) and Sat (New Mastersounds!) that went until 2:30 at least. I never even made it to the campground stage.

Sat was cold as shit but the musicians were hot! Krasno, Skerik and Kofi literally played with every act I saw, and once DTrucks showed up, he was everywhere too. Not to mention that the artists were all over the fest, watching shows, hanging out, eating jerry rolls, etc. A sycophant's cream dream.

Great time, great vibe, great venue. FWIW I have been to the SOS 4-5 times now and never seen anything too gestapo, but I wasn't trying to find it either. Be good or be good at it!

I'm almost done with my review for this year it will be on glide magazines site, maybe jambands.com too if they allow me the time to finish them another one next week. not jambase this years as i think they were reluctant to send me down to BC again this year after my review last year spawned calls from angry people on both sides of the controversy i wrote about last year. talk about getting things right though, seems like everything worked out because this year was one of the most enjoyable and smoothest fetivals i've seen.

Be good or be good at it! genius. I have seen twice officers in tie dies emptying pockets in the campground from 4 festivals over 6 years. other then that i have never had a problem myself with civil liberties there and heard little of it.

some missed points, I will point out :)

Jim Weider, for those that don't know, was the lead guitarist, that replaced robbie robertson in The Band, from 1989-1999. His rhythm guitarist was Mitch Stein, who I know best from his many years in the Steve Kimock Band, was a NICE surprise!!! Also, the closing tune, The Weight, was done in a reggae style, very nice :) Too bad this was a set at 1pm on saturday, because Jim Weider should be playing late night. His music was funky, jazzy, and full of rock, if you never heard Project Percolator, do yourself a favor and check them out, its very easy to like for anyone that loves rock.

Back to thursday, Brother Bean, a three piece power rock trio, who's music was a mix of phishy, bisco, was a good band with much potential, but they need more work. They may have a future, but they need more polishing, mostly the guitarist.

Dubconcious was up next. All we had to do was turn around :)

They brought their brand of dub-reggae-funk. It was dark, sultry, groovy

and funky. I totally preferred this set over the one they played the next day. The tribute set.

Telepath did their normal dub set, it was pretty good.

The motet followed, they played some of their regular tunes and they are TIGHT, funky, and still carry that latin groove!! I will always love this band, but they did repeat some of the songs the next day!!! I suppose you rehearse what you have time for and bring your best and thats what they did. Kyle had his moments, but overall they all shared equally in the solos.

Zach Deputy, a big surprise for being "canned music", He played everything, rock, reggae, folk, and even dance music and I found him to be very infectious with the grooves he programmed. To top it off, he was SUPER NICE!! it was fun to stand next to the big guy and get down to some Pgroove :) Zach is someone I would hire for a party!!! Mostly I would say its his SOULFUL voice and playing. acoustic guitar and programming, but seriously it was better than Keller solo, due to Zach's voice dripping with soul and feeling. you cannot help but like him :)

That brings up the last act of thursday night, P Groove played a short song set, about 3-4 songs, but most of them were about 20 minutes long. I remember most the Teakwood Betz, about halfway thru I forgot what song it was!! Brock and Hruby had some wonderful improv moments with this set, and I would suggest it over the the day time set the next day. Archive.org has this set up already :)

Friday>>

Inca Maya, I wish I had seen more than two songs, but I can say they were playing a very high level of rock and the guitar player was someone to pay attention to. I will have to get some of their music in the future.

Sam Kininger Band, was FUNKY!!! and fun!! I did not know about him until this day and all I can say, is just like any new orleans funk band, it WAS GREAT! Dumpstaphunk kick ass as usual. This first set was better than the dumstajam, I thought, my preference I guess.

The motet again, but as I said mostly a repeat set of the day before.

everyone orchestra was tight, but it seemed directionless to me, not that, thats a bad thing, but they never really sucked me in.

Lettuce first set of Bearcreek was outstanding, I went outside for air during a slow soul number, only to find out, they were beyond capacity and I could not get back in!!! Lucky for me, they played saturday too :)

they bring the FUNK, just like dumpsta, sam K, and the motet. great band.

Pgrooves friday set was nothing compared to thursdays madness.

YMSB was great as usual, I cannot place my finger on what makes them sound so different from other new grass groups, but they have some quality of dancy/jam/ drinking music thats hard to ignore. I loved them much more than I thought I would. The crowd left a record amount of beer cups on the ground after their set. Mostly, people used garbage cans, and it was not the "dirty south" I am so used to. I was proud of peoples behaviour in general.

Skipping to late night with The New Mastersounds, they announced when they got on stage that they got a great nights rest due to arriving a day early. so in return, we got a SUPER HOT FUNKY SET. it was their best of the weekend for sure. if you like funk, and you like a guitar player with some great jazzy skills like Eddie Roberts, then go see them!!!!! It was great to see them well rested and it was by far the best of the three times I have seen them.

Sunday>>>

chicago afrobeat project, funky and fun as usual.

donna hopkins band, this lady can play and sing, her brand of southern rock was infectious.

big sams funky nation. another new orleans classic funk group. hard not to love it.

john browns body, wonderful funky reggae, my first time for them too.

lots of trippy keyboard work with this band.

Tishamingo was decent southern rock, but I am not crazy about them. They had some cool guests come out too.

Mofro, tightly scripted, soulful and dripping with that front porch soul, was great, but don't expect much jamming, JJ pretty much does his songs

"verbatim" but thats why its so tight. I wish in the future they would jam or improv a little bit, just to mix it up. all in all, JJ is full of soul and a super nice guy, I have all his albums. His set was just kinda plain, after seeing Jim Weider and Sam Kininger and the late night set of the New Mastersounds, but really, you either LOVE mofro, or you are indifferent to them. He puts on a great show, but as I said, the songs are done as if listening to an album.

thanks for reading my rambling account of the weekend, I had my best days thursday and friday, then I just got too tired to pay close attention after that :) I will attend next year I am sure of it, it was a wonderful time.

Yes there are COPS there undercover, you have to be stupid not to realize it, and if you want to do illegal things, its best NOT TO DO IT IN THE OPEN. go in your tent dummy :) peace kid'os !!!

Very well written article. This festival was the best Bear Creek/Down on the Farm yet and it's only going to continue to grow and get better as the years go by. It was a magical weekend at the Spirit and a lot of hard work went into making it as bad ass as it was.

A huuuge thanks goes out to Paul Levine. Not only for putting this amazing festival on and not only for his dedication and hard work but for looking out for those of us in Tallahassee when he didn't have to. Paul, THANK YOU for all that you do for us. It's greatly appreciated.

OK. Yes theywere busting people, I got picked up and taken to county! I am so pissed I got my ticket in July. I love Suwannee, but after that I feel so disrespected. I thought I paid over $100 to be left alone. NOT arested just setting around a camp fire. AND no one talked about Dr. Lou's set, If no one has ever heard of them check it out, and ZACH DEPUTY is sick!

I'm sad I missed this. For those complaining about the police force at Suwanee you have either never been or been blatantly stupid and obvious about what you're doing. Its not like its a free-for-all once you're within park grounds. The force is focusing on people who are pushing their goods, not on the guy having a good time. Still I would have to say that their presence is at a minimum. It upsets me to hear people complaining about one of the best musical settings in the U.S.

Just so that we are being accurate, there were over 4000 people at Bear Creek this past weekend and 40 arrests. Way too many to be sure, but not hundreds.

I have been to the SOS 4-5 times now and have yet to see a first hand account of police busting people. I have heard the stories but always wonder about the details. We always camp in the woods a bit so you can hear/see people coming. And at the stages its either walk into the crowd or hunker down into the hammock. Other than that, I have always done everything I ever wanted to do with out problems. Goes without saying its BYOD!

AND they were cutting peoples wrist bands off and trying to charge them with trespassing!! NOW that is F'ed up! BEAR CREEK has some explaining to do!!!! I've been coming to S.O.S. since 2000 and love this amazing venue!! As with any beautiful venue there comes respect to the land and the people it supports(locals).

My 15th visit to the Suwanee and 5-0 there is always the same, do something violent, stupid or just too dang obvious (like openly passing a J) > go to county. A little bit of caution goes a long way in North FL, it's not freaking Miami, they have zero tax base. Live Oak's a quiet little town and the economy and govt. must love the income from bail, fines, etc..If you're sketchy, they notice, fast. Bear Creek 08 was really well done logistically, ZERO hassles for my crewe. It did seem undersold, 4000 sounds high, I'd say 2500. The amphitheater was only half full and no big field this time, pity. But I'll be back in 09 for sure! The promoters should bring more jam next year to balance such deep funk grooves and electronica. (Grear pics btw! My camera fogged up a lot so these will have to do.)

TeqSunrise11 Fri 11/21/2008 04:24PM

Like, oh my Gawwwd, I got arrested for doing something ILLEGAL! SOS is private land and in order to have music there and in order to be able to go late at night without having to obtain permits the owners of the property need to make some concessions and one of those likely includes not pissing off the local force. If they were to shut the cops out then there would NEVER be another festival on that piece of land.

Also, of the 39 arrests 6 were for fraudulent wrist bands and even many of the ones that were busted for that were given the opportunity to buy a ticket. The organizer of the festival realizes that things could have gone a little smoother with the cops and steps are being taken for next year's festival. And there were not over 100 people arrested, in fact you can look at the Sherrif's office website and see who, how many, and why those people were was arrested.

Again, thanks Paul and Lyle for such an amazing weekend. I feel like BCMF is 'our' little festival and it's only going to continue to grow and prosper as the word gets out on 'our' little secret.

01reggae get your facts straight bud. while i will not post the link here for the discretion of those involved, a simple search of the suwannee county inmate database over the dates of the festival will show that not only were there not 100 arrests over the weekend throughout the county, but there was less than 40 that were festival related. look forward to not sharing my space with negative nancies like yourself. don't believe your friends hype. great review!!! some mention of nigel hall's wedding would have been nice as well. the singer from lettuce got engaged and married on saturday and then we all participated in one of the best wedding receptions ever. sorry if the weekend wasn't as magical for you as it was for me!

No mention of Lettuce, huge disappointment, but not really surprising seeing how little credit they are given considering how absolutely filthy and amazing they are. Jldawg, that may be the most unintelligent post yet. Judge the festival by the pictures? I assure you at least some of the folks at Bear Creek were smiling alot. They probably couldn't help smiling when Derek Trucks, Eric Krasno, Kofi Burbridge and others joined Dumpstaphunk on the main stage, or when Nigel Hall from Lettuce got married and then brought his new bride on stage. We understand you don't like the police presence at Suwannee. We get it, don't have a beer in Live Oak and don't come. Your suggestion that great bands shouldn't play music in North Florida because of the police is assinine. Everyone deserves music. We'll enjoy ours here in Florida, you can stay where you are. That seems like a fair deal.

I wanted to go this year and had a free ticket but I couldn't take off from work for all 4 days. I really liked the way the line-up looked and the way they run it there. I love festivals where the artists don't just play their sets and leave. Meeting and chilling with them is half the fun! I've been searching for a new Florida festival since Langerado has been streamlined and touched up for efficiency and $$$. And yeah why not mention of Lettuce? They always bring the funk really hard. The reviewer writes about Dumpstaphunk playin Rolling Stones "Some girls" and FEMA. A bit confused here - they usually play Miss You by Stones, and FEMA is part of the lyrics of Dumpstaphunks orginial Meanwhile. Is the latter a new original from DP and was the Rolling Stones cover "Some Girls"? For those of you that managed to stay unbusted, please fill me out!! BTW - seems to be a really nice festival.

ramon you are right... it wasnt some girls it was miss you, and the fema is from meanwhile. That is just the tip of the iceberg on this article. I am not gonna be a debbie downer, but for such a mechanically well written article, it sure gets it wrong.

NO LETTUCE. they were hands down the highlight of the fest. period. Im still trying to come up with the proper way to inform Deitch of their ommission. First Loki, now BC. Its demoralizing.

however, do not let this article do a disservice to what was an unbelievable fest. It is a shame that the reviewer took such an elementary, blow by blow approach, and then didnt even get all the punches, or even the best ones, any shine. SMH

I will be back with more details after I get over the fact that this is the Bear Creek review. I had very high hopes that it would embody the greatness of the festival, one that ranks up there with HSMF.

cant always get it right,

great photos though, but... where's Lettuce.

It puts a smile on my face to watch how Down On The Farm/Bear Creek has grown by leaps and bounds! First of all, thank you to Paul and Bisi and Co. who worked so hard to make this magical weekend possible! To the uninformed, SOS is a PUBLIC park, which is why Johnny Law has the freedom to roam free and bother people simply enjoying themselves(without harming anyone else)....i was arrested at BC last year for smoking a bowl during Little Feat. Needlees to say, this is "our homegrown little festie" and i wouldn't have missed it for the world(not to mention the increasingly badass lineup)! For anyone who had a run-in w/ the 5-0....its the local pigs, and NOT the festival's, fault.....nice review, but kinda short considering it was 4 days of unbelievable tunes!!! especially w/ NO MENTION of LETTUCE, NEW MASTERSOUNDS, or ZACH DEPUTY!!!! aside from Derek Trucks and Dumpstaphunk(ON FIRE)....those three were the highlights of my weekend!!! everything was amazing, Paul!!! btw, the PURPLE, PURPLE HAT AMPITHEATRE, AND PURPLE HATS, were and extremely well done and deserved tribute to our friend Rachel Hoffman(not a political statement....durr) she was increadibly involved in the N. FLA music community, and her trademark was her purple fuzzy hat she wore at these festivals.....THANK YOU DUBCONCIOUS!!! once more, thank you Paul, Bisi, Lyle, Alicia, Lisa, Sly, Michelle, Ben, Marshall, Karl, and everyone else i can't recall at the moment....for one of the best weekends of my life!!!!!!!

We were not being Blatant or stupid or obvious... the crew of about 10 I was with have been to PLENTY of festies... so we know better than that. The cops said that they saw everyone in the circle hit the bowl, but for some reason decided to single out the last 3 guys that hit it and took them to county, after searching every person there, and all of our bags. The entire time we were completely respectful and compliant, only to be treated like scum. One of my friend was wearing one of those Baja hoodie things... and the officer goes, "what are you, some kinda afghani terrorist??? Don't worry kids, now that Barack Obama is president, this shit will be legal soon" Sorry, I can understand busting us for doing something illegal (EVEN THOUGH WE JUST HAD POT) but the way that they went about their procedure was just rude. I politely asked for the number to contact the jail, and the officer gave me the number to an entirely different department.

I have close friends in the law enforcement field, and I have complete respect for those officers that do their job in a RESPECTFUL way. I have been to festivals where the cops have GOOD vibes. YES they still do their job, but their overall attitude about the scene is a good one.. not a "lets find all the little obama supporting druggie kids!!" like the cops present at the suwannee.

I really wish I had seen more shows, but after that ordeal and 600 bucks later after bailin my buds outta jail... I just had a bad taste in my mouth, and drove my ass back to georgia. Glad to see everyone else had a good time though! Much love to Doc Lou! You guys rocked it, we're proud your reppin V-TOWN!!! If you haven't heard of them, you gotta!

Why is that writers here put something down in print and it's a fact? Nick Daniels NEVER worked with the Rolling Stones (Ivan Neville was one of Keith Richards Expensive Wino's) and Papa Mali IS NOT a New Orleans Transplant. He visits NOLA, but lives in Austin.

Facts do make it credible. Fiction, makes it just that.

holy crap, what a fun festival! bear creek has come a LONG way since last year, due in part to less hurdles to overcome. great job, paul and all the rest. definitely the best festival to grace the spirit of the suwanee. it really is a florida family reunion. its always great to see my brothers and sisters in such a happy event.

spirit of the suwanee is an amazing musical venue. its huge, you can camp within the trees unlike so many big festival sites, if you wish or need there are electrical sites, you can swim in the suwanee (if its not too cold.... took a quick dip on friday and it was REAL refreshing), you can rent golf carts and go tooling around. the ONLY downside to the park is the police presence. live oak is a po-dink country town that makes a good bit of income by arrests at the park. the cops wear plain clothes and can be pretty deceptive, sometimes asking if you have a piece they can use to pack a bowl, and once you hand them one, they arrest you. that being said, i personally didnt see anyone get arrested, and they didnt stop me from having a hell of a time. SoS is not a free-for-all festival ground, keep your whits about you, and you'll be just fine. the cops are more of a problem for the people who go to fests more for the drugs than the music.

ramon- you guessed right, it was miss you and meanwhile... both shows are up for download on bt.etree.org and possibly archive.org . check it out for yourself.

bear creek has got to be the funkiest fest in the country! once again i'm gonna be anxious for another year waiting for the next bear creek! lettuce and new mastersounds tore us all a new ass to shake! and derek trucks?! holy shit! where did that come from? never saw that coming! has that guy EVER made a mistake on guitar? what a line-up, what a weekend, what a festival!

i'll be attending every bear creek fest that will ever be held, and i'll do everything to make sure all my friends are there too. so just keep kickin ass, paul. things just keep gettin better!

Could have said a few words about Zach Deputy....The pictures are nice but I think the Deputy needs credit where credit is due! 4 sets 2 of them being late nite campsite jams that the cops had to put a stop to cause all the hippies were having too much fun.He also gave out free CD's of all the sets to anybody who had already blown their loot, what a guy!!The festival all in all has been my best yet.Trucks signed my guitar while strollin through the campground...enough said!....Oh yeah cops in Tie-dyes can suck on my tie stick!

Yeah Toulouse, Nick never played with Stones ( even though I am sure he has hung with Keith through the Nevilles). Ivan has indeed been in Keiths band, and he has also done studio work on some Stones albums. Nevertheless - I am sure the reviewer is right about one thing - Dumpstaphunk is one of the baddest bands out there for the moment. Check out Stand´in on Carlos Sosa´s myspace - www.myspace.com/carlossosasax!

teqsunrise11 could u be more specific with what steps are being taken to make this year go smoother, if paul would chip in thatd be great. find it hard to spend that kind of money on a festy whos organizer cant do anything to protect his customers from going to jail for smoking pot by a fire at night? there are 100's of festivals in other states who dont have hatemongering redneck police like forida.
