AFROBEAT LEGEND FEMI KUTI ANNOUNCES U.S. TOUR DATES IN 2009
First studio album in seven years, Day By Day, to be released on November 18

Femi Kuti
On the brink of releasing his first studio album in seven years, Femi Kuti has announced a U.S. tour that will see the Afrobeat legend play venues from coast to coast in January 2009.

Femi's forthcoming album, Day By Day, is set for release on November 18 and will be the first release from the new Downtown Records imprint Mercer Street Records. Femi launched back onto the public stage this fall when he was featured on emerging artist, and label mate, Brett Dennen's runaway hit, "Make You Crazy" (watch the video here).

Not content to merely follow in the footsteps of his famous father, Fela Kuti, Femi continues to expand his musical palette with his latest studio release, Day By Day, a hybrid of Afro-pop, jazz and urban influences. Femi is world renowned as a gifted songwriter and performer who continues to push the boundaries of Afrobeat rather than resting on his legacy. He has toured America with alt-rock band Jane's Addiction, sang on Rachid Taha's Made In Medina album and reached out to the American hip-hop community, connecting with artists such as Mos Def, D'Angelo, Nile Rodgers, Erykah Badu and the Roots. There is no doubt that this respite has Femi ready to get back on the road and eager to bring his outstanding new work on Day By Day to the live arena.

Femi is great...don't get me worng, but his sound is more a fusion of hip-hop, jazz and afro-pop. If you want to get as close as possible to Fela's afrobeat thing, check out Seun Kuti and the Egypt 80. Seun is Fela's youngest son and he tours with members of Fela's original band. It's the real deal. That being said, Femi also puts on a great show.

YES! Saw Femi when he opened for Jane's Addiction at Madison Square Garden and was blown away. If you dig Fela, you will really like Femi. Also, check out his younger brother Seun Kuti.

My heart just sank a little when I saw the NYC date of January 8th because I will still be on Jam Cruise ... Then I looked down and saw he would be back in the City on the 11th!

PRAISE JEEBUS!!!!

flat5 - Femi plays primarily afrobeat, a genre that Fela originated along with drummer Tony Allen and the Afrika 70. However, aside from genre similarities, Femi and Fela both offer lyrics speaking out against injustice and working for the betterment of society. And Femi is Fela's eldest son, carrying the afrobeat torch so to speak in the 21st century along with Seun Kuti (Fela's youngest son) who currently leads Fela's band the Egypt 80. (also an incredible show to go see if you can)

So yeah, they are similiar. Picture Femi as the urband hip/hop version of Fela.

Anyway you cut it, GO SEE FEMI KUTI! I saw his show summer of 2007 in Burlington VT, I will never miss another opportunity to watch Femi and his band in action. Also, that specific show had local VT band Japhy Ryder opening. I'd recommend not missing them as well.

thanks for putting this up. i have missed Femi a number of times but i've been listening to Fela since mid 70s and his is some of the best stuff. ever. i did manage to get out for Seun and Egypt 80 at the (free! sometimes that free music is the best, you just gotta keep your ears and eyes open) Stern Grove concert series this year. So happy I made the effort, phenomenal show. I agree w/ matthau, all of this is great (Femi and Seun) but if you are looking for the experience (music) closest to Fela then get out to see Seun if you can. Wonderful wonderful music.

If you all enjoy Fela and/or Femi then you have to check out Aphrodesia. They are an American Afrobeat group out of S.F. and are still the only Americans to ever play the coveted Shrine in Nigeria, Felas' original club. Although it was recunstructed since Fela's day it was still quite something for them to have the chance to preform live in Nigeria with Femi. YOu can learn more about them at Aphrodesia.org! They should not be missed!
