Sun Spin: The Story of the Ghost

OUR CLASSIC ALBUM SPOTLIGHT WONDERS
CAN IT REALLY BE 10 YEARS?

1998 was a magical year for many Phish fans. Released October 27, 1998, The Story of the Ghost succeeded in freezing many of their live charms into engaging, contained, permanent vessels. The product of extensive improvisations, Ghost finds the quartet exploring notions of groove, rhythm and time, as well as further finding their lyrical footing in a way that crossed over into the mainstream from their already massive cult following. The album hit No. 8 on the Billboard charts, second only to 1996's Billy Breathes. There's only one lengthy cut ("Guyute" at 8:26) surrounded by tracks that average about three minutes – a fraction of the elongated, twisted versions that surfaced live in the wake of the album. Yet, their exploratory spirit remains deliciously intact here. For a band that's put out thirteen studio albums thus far, Phish often gets short shift for being a thoughtful, artful studio animal. Ghost neatly debunks the notion that they were only "good" in concert and we're happy to lift a lighter (or cell phone, as you choose) in celebration of its tenth anniversary.

Track listing:

1. Ghost
2. Birds of a Feather
3. Meat
4. Guyute
5. Fikus
6. Shafty
7. Limb by Limb
8. Frankie Says
9. Brian and Robert
10. Water in the Sky
11. Roggae
12. Wading in the Velvet Sea
13. The Moma Dance
14. End of Session

We jump off with "The Moma Dance" at the '98 Farm Aid benefit concert. The funk's so thick you can do the backstroke in it.

Here's an unaired performance of "Guyute" recorded for PBS' Sessions At West 54th series.

"Wading In The Velvet Sea" is easily one of Phish's most beautiful tunes, and this performance at the '99 Fuji Rock Festival, despite somewhat dodgy audio, is a fine example of the intimacy and grandeur of this piece.

We stay in Fuji for "Brian and Robert" with an extended horn duet from Fishman and a Japanese pal.

Letterman welcomed the band to some of their first late night TV appearances and this saucy "Birds of a Feather" shows why.

It seems like yesterday, when this album was released! It's hard to say it's my favorite, because Billy Breathes, Rift, and Junta are in my top picks as well. i think i saw 7 shows that year, 2 nights in hampton topping it off. can't wait, i got 2 for saturday. first time i was ever turned down for mailorder, but i got lucky through ticketbastard.

I vividly remember the afternoon of the Oct. day that this was released & going to the blockbuster music on capital blvd in Raleigh and scoring this gem of an album. Being a high school senior and knowing phish - knowing that you knew what the true deal was - priceless feelings of 1998.

This album has never been out of rotation for me - makes me wonder how many hundreds of times I have listened to these notes over the past ten years

Can it get any better than this?

I remember hearing this on the radio one night, driving with my father. it felt so good to hear Phish on the radio, which is still rare. I remembered the strange almost empty at times sound during the verses of Birds of a Feather. I will always love the guitar solo on this version, as the horns add many layers that are almost hidden behind the rest of the band and the intensity.

nice and dark. that jam on limb by limb jumps out of the speakers and I remember thinking wow they really captured their live energy on an album. brian and robert was a redefining moment for phish, where they showed they create a solid pop song with great lyrics. it always reminds me of my old apartment in the ghetto.. haha just two of my faves on that disc.

The funk's so thick you can do the backstroke in it = Very Nice!

Guyute was the ugly pig, he walked on me and danced a jig, that he had learned when he was six, he laughed and did some other tricks,

like pulling weapons from his coat, and holding them against my throat

he lectured me in language strange, and scampered quickly out of range,

I'm bouncing like a newborn elf, I can't remain inside myself

Guyute glances in my eyes, and manages to hypnotize, as I sleep the sleep of death,he sucks from me my only breath, that I had breathed since I was ten,I hope this happens once again.

What's strange is I just saw a used copy of Ghost at a local cd store and thought, "Wow, did someone truly not like this, or were they desperate for money or what?" Don't know if it's there best studio album, but definitely some of their best cuts:Birds, Limb by Limb, Roggae, Velvet Sea

Great album! I remember going to a pre release party at a bar/pizza shop in Boulder, CO with a group of friends and listening to the whole album. They gave out prizes including tickets to the McNichols Arena show, which I attended along with 10 others that year. The funk is definitely thick on this album.

it seems everyone likes phish here... I know I will get a bunch of negative votes, but the lyrics are not that well done, and the songs are generally boring. I love grateful dead, wsp and most jam bands, I have even seen trey and gordo live together at rothbury, and it was just boring. But more power to all the fans of phish and I hope you enjoy your ten year reunion. Its been almost twenty years since WSP Spance Wrangler, that is a great album!

They should add the Ghost opener from the Fillmore (10-15-98) to this list... So ripping the show was an instant classic after one tune

jwatson, remember that Guyute was a live staple for years before they put it on Ghost. I would also have to vote for Rift, but its close. Actually had this very debate this weekend, and we settled on any live recording haha!

Thats my most anticipated part of the 09 tour... Undermind stuff is gonna get explored more live. Im really looking forward to that.

you can't really rank phish albums best to worst because each of them has a unique taste and style. brendan got it right, depends on the mood. however I will say that ghost has probably been the most listened to phish, or possibly out of my whole collection, album I own.

This was always my fav although some people argue Billy breathes is the best.... Junta has the song list, but was just not indicative enough of what those songs would become..... The title track of ghost sounds so cool and innovative... dude.. picutre of nectar cmon. This is like: ok everyone knows Rocky 4 is the best but its cool to say rocky 1 but no other one is acceptable

8-9-98....(rip jerry)

First set birds roggea and moma, all great.

My favorite phish set at the moment.

Do have a question tho for a phan more knowligable than myself.

They open with punch eye, and rip this solo that is (sped up but...) a different latin feel instramental track off a differnet album, im forgetting which, but was this the norm, where these two songs always blended live?

...and, idk the roggea off the album doesnt do it for me, find the magnatude of that low chord just isnt there. still solid but...

then again i suppose you could say that for most phish tracks, i feel roggea especially tho.
