At the risk of damning this with faint praise, Moody Motorcyle (Suicide Squeeze) is a very nice album - breezy and touched by the sunny nonchalance of the Lovin' Spoonful and Happy Mondays, where light drum machines move acoustic guitars and sweet harmonies along. This ditty driven air kiss is the creation of singer-songwriter Jim Guthrie and Nick Thorburn of Islands, and while a small scale effort in many respects, it's slightness that charms. A lot. Song for song, Human Highway hold their own against the over-heralded New Pornographers, whose last release didn't manage anything as cool and catchy as Moody Motorcycle's "What World," "Sleep Talking" or bottled bubbly opener "The Sound," which is simplicity itself and all the better for it. And they manage to steal the silliness of a title like "Duties of a Lighthouse Keeper" by giving it genuine coastal melancholy. Like I said, nice album.
