I'm glad that Jambase finally got this out, this festival was one of the best this year. I went to Lolla and Outside Lands festival and after Lolla, I didn't think anything could beat that. This one sure came close if not just as good. Wyclef brought the house down and was definitely a wild show. STP was a suprise rocking show with a huge crazy psychedelic screen to go with it, they played very well together and Scotts voice is just as good as it was in the 90s, even after all the cigarettes and drugs. I have to say even Lil Wayne was good, being his hometown, he'd better be good. Mars Volta was another stellar performance and they played a very tight set. NIN was the show of the weekend, i was in the front and got heavily squished, but it was totally worth it being that close to the stage to see the even more psyched out screens and Trent doing his thing. Sharon Jones was amazing and got the crowd extra groovin on the last day. I have to say that the Butthole Surfers were the best show under NIN, they came on 1/2hr late and most of the people that camped out in the tent left to go see REM, I was about to, but i was glad i didn't since the Surfers delivered the most psychedelic show i've ever seen. They had six video screens that played some of the trippiest video collages and the band, even though the singer was drunk as fuck, was definitely putting on one of the best shows i've ever seen. At one point the Tent was almost empty and then they started playing "Fire" by REM in a drunken matter. They were something out of some Andy Warhol creation and delivered a real rocking show. I ran over at the end to REM and got to see them, but i was more impressed with Butthole Surfers. Overall even though every band started 15-20min late, they were all great performances and well worth the $115 ticket, i don't think you can't beat that deal with the amount of great bands that were there and especially being in NOLA! It's been a wonderful year of music and festivals and now that the Dead and Phish are coming back next year, i'm sure that next year will be yet another great year for Music...

One more thing, the article did not do this festival justice, no NIN or Mars Volta talk and the fact that the writer put down a lot of the performances is ridiculous. There was a shitload of music and she only saw a small portion, maybe she should take some music journalism classes.

Kind of a weak article, but the photography is great!

I found another nice and detailed article that didn't leave out NIN, STP, Man Man, Mars Volta, etc. Here's a link: http://breakfastontour.com/drupal/voodoo+experience+2008+day+1+friday+october+24

i'm so glad somebody finally said what i have always thought about lil wayne. also you can't expect one reporter to make it to every show, kids, especially not at one of these big clusterfuck festies. still looks like a pretty good time though, but damn the dudes in REM are looking rough!! i didn't know they had Jerry Garcia in the band now, that's tight!

great read,thanks for your insight.

excellent pics!

as far as others making mention of the writer missing the likes of nin, etc. 1 person can only see so much music. as with any fest, you pick and choose your acts.

Charlie Tuna = the 1 who put the snapple in your cooler

i don't know why people still can't understand that one writer can't cover an entire festival on their own? anyways & whatever, the review was decent, but not great. i'd say the best part about it was that there was no mention of panic at the disco, thank you for that! i really can't even believe those guys were there... they make me want to hurl.

Ian Neville a disgrace to the neville legacy.... Could you please explain in what way? I think he is a very good rhythm guitarist. Listen closely to what he is doing, and you will hear some funk guitar that you hardly hear today. People say that John Mayer is a fine guitarist. Heard him play Cissy Strut, and he does not reach the knees of Ian there at least.

But, Ian lacks a signature sound and solo chops. Also, by now he should have eased up on stage. I agree that he is the weakest part in Dumpstaphunk. But, then again, Dumpstaphunk may be the tightest band around these days.

"Unfunky UFO" is a Parliament song, not a Dumpstaphunk original.

"Let the Good Times Roll"? I think you mean "Magnolia Soul." It's from Ozo's 2007 release, Don't Mess with the Dragon.

Sure, it's true that one person can't cover every act at a festival, but it's a little ridiculous that this reviewer didn't bother seeing two of the three headliners. I'm left feeling unimpressed by the writing, but the photography is excellent.

I enjoyed the review Saira... it was a fun read, nice job!

Zach very nice shots as usual. I'm so sorry I had to cancel my trip to NOLA. I know I misses a funky good time.

On Ian Neville... he does what he does very very well. He plays a funk style guitar that is no longer played today. There are no new major bands out today that plays straight up phunk like Dumpstaphunk. What he does takes major talent, you may not necessarily always hear it unless you listen for it. But that doesn't mean it's not great or essential for the entire body of music to get the sound they get. It's completely essential, he's mastered it, and he's one of the best at it.

On Not seeing / reviewing every band: It's imposable for one person to do which is obvious, but moreover Jambase is a free publication that for the most part doesn't pay writers to cover or travel to cover shows and festivals. JamBase provides a great forum for writers to submit their work on shows they want to cover, the way they want to cover them. You have a voice to comment on every article as well, so it is what it is. In the current state of our economy, be thankful there are publications like Jambase that are still available and are free and that there are people that will to donate their time and passion to contribute writing and photos.

Let me just say from a Deadhead to a douchebag Zach, suck a nut, NIN were covered at both Virgin Fest and Lollapalooza by Jambase, so don't be such a friggin mamaluke and piss on NIN because you weren't on some list. Both you and the writer suck for not even attending NIN, whom was the best show of the whole festival! The fact you left early just shows your commitment to music, because isn't that what it is essentially about, and not being such a pissant and leaving cause you were so tired, fuck off, i was tired too, but i stayed and had a blast. Jambase should fire your ass and the writer too and the fact you have any supporters suprises me.
