Some nice pictures on display here. Loki was an absolutely magical weekend. Lots of awesome music, great people, very warm atmosphere. The write-up does not really do justice to the quality of sets we experienced imo. Toubab raised their music to a whole new level. The Roots brought the house down. The biggest surprises for me were Suenalo and DJ Equal and Friends (featuring a couple of Toubab Krewe members). I just hope this cool little festival is going to be around again next year with an equally strong line-up!
Wow! Great review! Excellent pics! Very well done!
this looks like a blast. beautiful location, and plenty of funky tunes to keep one's arss a shakin'. I do hope they are doing this again, with a similar line up, so I can start planning for it well in advance, being the broke joke that I am.
Nice costumes! That pigeon is the whip!
that look like some good ol fun
Looks amazing....that guy Vann gets around
too bad that many of the band's (including ours) that played loki had their checks bounce for their performance. that will stop your 'good vibes' real fast! what a rip off!!!
no mention of LEE BOYS or Roosevelt Collier on pedal steel w Peruvian Pedicurist???
looks like fun!
i should have jumped in larry's van saturday night when i had the chance!
Here are some links for some of the weekends FREE music for Downloading!!

The best photos Ive seen from Loki so far are by Rich Cox, absolutely out of this world, have a look:
i'm sure i will get a thumbs down for this one but i am not really sure that we were at the same festival. the george clinton thing was one of the worst performances i have ever seen. i know he is old, and smokes rock and all that stuff, but this was embarassing. he could barely walk, much less put much into the music. alot of the bands at this fest were just a colaboration of artist who never play together. jam sessions are cool, sometimes, but not for a whole weekend. the roots change their shows due to the crowd which is cool, but i don't want to hear them do a bunch of covers. i mean, they have tons of material, just because the crowd was mostly white doesnt mean we want to hear bob dylan songs. papa mali kept coming on stage for just about every show. and what ever happened to the big surprise guest? first it was cake, then it was not. was it karl denson? ok, like he has never played in asheville before. we were supposed to get some band who would sell out an entire fest by himself. the checks probably bounced because i don't think there was more than 2K people there. sorry to rant. we had a good time but the overall quality of the music was subpar at best. i would be surprised to see another loki music festival.
I partly agree with you, udsh. The B.O.N.G was one of the most horrible performances I have ever seen. They went on about 2 hours late because of techincal issues in the microphones of all the damn people in that band. It would have been cool to see Clinton with a talented band, like P-funk, but the BONG consisted of Amateur musicians. between every song they were like, "now weve got a special treat for yall tonight," or, "we wrote this track, this is our track" I had to leave it was so bad. I thought the artist collaborations, however, were amazing! The Peruvian Pedicurists was one of the coolest things I've ever seen, with 5 guitarists plus roosevelt on the steel pedal. SICK! the denson thing was a disappointment, but as BAD and CHAOTIC the festival was on friday, I thought the festival was well run and amazing on saturday. they couldnt have picked a better band for the costume ball than antibalas. PBS ROCKED THE HOUSE! TR3 was amazing, Project Percolator was amazing, and the Roots were OFF THE HOOK! It sucks what happened to Papa Mali's actual set being cut short due to amplification laws on sunday, but overall, despite a HORRIBLE friday, the festival was amazing, and I would go back next year if they had it (i'd probably work it though).
I can't get enough fest pics.
:)
Hands down the worst festival i have ever been to. all the bands went on way late or way Early. When do bands go on EARLY. The BONG shit was the worst thing i have ever seen, Clinton looked dead on stage and his band was even worse. Just an all around nightmare of a festival weekend. I mean, we had fun, but i got sick and hated the music.
Also i heard everyone's checks bounced and bands and peopel who worked their ass off are getting f'ed
this looks like a pretty cool place to have a festival. oh and has anybody else noticed how pretty much every festival decorates with the same kind of canvas art stuff these days? i mean it's cool but come on... we don't want all our festivals looking the same.
BONG was not a bunch of amateur musicians...I was there almost at day 1 when writing began in NOLA dec 07...everyone from Galactic, Lee Boys, P Funk, DDBB, Roddenberry, and many many others...
i was at Loki for just Thurs and FRI, pretty much to see B.O.N.G., which is comprised of all professional musician's, many of which have been w/Clinton for years. Though I didn't like all of it, I dug some of it...especially the stuff w/Laura Reed and Debrissa :), but I'm biased.
I'd been to two other festies at Deerfields this summer and Loki seemed to be the most done up w/decorations, the site just looked better...of course Deerfields had also made some improvements themselves as well which helped.
But the entire printed schedule was off. Nothing seemed to start on time, no one knew who was going on where and when and subsequently I missed some music. I missed most of the ONE band besides B.O.N.G. I really wanted to see and that pissed me off.
I hadn't heard about artists/workers not getting paid, but that really sucks.
Loki coulda been way better overall. Maybe they'll do better next year.
Deerfields was hands down, one of the most beautiful places to have a festival!!!! Other than scheduled times being delayed, the music spoke for itself, AMAZING (Save being prompt for business meetings...If the acts not being on time kept you from enjoying the festival experience, you have serious issues. You could practically here who was playing from anywhere anyway....WOOWW, cant believe that 'Lettuce' wasnt even mentioned, they def brought the FUNK!!! Great Fest, but next year have someone other than MOFRO close it out, my only request! thanks Loki
If you had ever seen George Clinton in the past 5 years or so you would have known that he doesn't put on a great show, His band brings the funk, not George.
The Schedule changes were made because some bands couldn't make it there on time so they changed sets around to make sure we DID have some music during those would be (no-show) times. At least we HAD music all the time!
Deerfields is the most Amazing place to have a Fest on the East coast hands down. If you walked away from LOKI not having a fun time then you have some deeper soul searching to do for yourself.
Bonnaroo is that a way >>> Go there !!
I thought Loki was AWESOME! Sure, the schedule may have been off a bit, but none of the acts were cancelled. I loved the collaborative theme of the festival and seeing people from different bands getting together and jamming out. It was raw, and for many of these collaborations it was a first time performance. I enjoyed everything I saw from The Roots, DJ Equal, The BIG OL Nasty GetDOWN to SCI FI whose starship landed at 4 am and took us into outer-space with their electronic funky jazz rhythms.
I don't know if there will be another Loki, but I had an amazing weekend and just wanted to give a shout out and thank all the performers, artists, stage crew, and everyone who helped put the festival together at the beautiful "Garden of Eden" Deerfields.
Tim Reynolds' comment is HILARIOUS
I love Deerfields!
I enjoyed myself the whole weekend. My volunteer job for the free ticket was Backstage Security. I spent Saturday afternoon jamming my butt off with PBS and TR3 just off on the left side of the stage. What a cake job.
Karl Denson was awesome, the Roots were dank as well. Toubab was solid as usual. The Toots set was a great way to end the weekend, had to leave early to get home. Thought it was crazy that they had bands playing late Sunday.
B.O.N.G. was more of a Big Ole Nasty Letdown to me. Clinton sounded really bad. I was cool to groove with the band when his mic was turned down. Was a big disappointment for me, I had never gotten a chance to see him live until Loki.
Turbo Pro Project caught me by surprise, I had never heard of them. Hope to see more out of them.
I wonder how the festival did money-wise? Seemed to me that half the people there were working it or guests of artists.
Oh Yah, It was a good festival. Rich and Andy Cox rock! Best father and son photo team in the SouthEast, maybe the USA.
"Rich and Andy Cox rock!"
Totally agree! got the chance to talk with these guys over the weekend at Loki and was truly impressed with them as photographers and people.
I've also heard from many people about the bands all getting bad checks...how can anyone say it was an "awesome" festival when you have the people who really put it on not getting paid for their hard work? Jack Ballard is a lier, cheater, and all-over dishonest person, and isn't his name as Loki fitting?

Cricketee, you are way off the mark. Jack's not at all the person you describe. Conclusions can certainly be jumped all over but really... do you know or have even met Jack And NO this is his mom sticking up for him, I was also one of those "people who really put it on" and took a pay cut for him.
