MMJ's James Injured at Show Chicago Gigs Postponed

From www.gazetteonline.com:

My Morning Jacket Singer Injured During UI Show
The Gazette

Jim James :: 09.19 :: Greek by Vann
IOWA CITY — My Morning Jacket singer and guitarist Jim James was injured during the Southern-rock band's concert Tuesday night at the University of Iowa.

James slipped and fell about 30 minutes into the band's set at the Recreation Building and was taken to a hospital. The remainder of the show was canceled. Officials with SCOPE, the UI's concert organization, would not say where James was taken and declined further comment.

James apparently hit his head in the fall, which happened in the dark between songs. The extent of his injuries were not known.

My Morning Jacket's four other members left the stage seconds after James fell. Drummer Patrick Hallahan returned to the stage several minutes later to say James fell and his injury was being assessed. About ten minutes later, Hallahan and the rest of the band, minus James, took the stage to say the show was canceled.

"Jim was really hurt, he's heading to the hospital," Hallahan said. "We're really sorry, this has never happened before."

At least one fan yelled "refund!" but the majority of the crowd cheered in a show of support for James.

My Morning Jacket in Iowa City 10/07/2008

The official word from MMJ is:

As some of you may have heard we had to cancel our show last evening in Iowa City. We were finishing up the last few bars of "Off The Record," and just like any other night we were all having a great time. Jim went to get closer to the audience on his side of the stage, and as he moved forward to step onto the sub-woofer the lights darkened, and he inadvertently stepped off the stage. Upon falling, he suffered traumatic injuries to his torso, and was immediately taken to the hospital. Per the doctor's orders, Jim will be off the road and recovering from his injuries for the next two to three weeks. Sadly, we must postpone the two shows in Chicago on Thursday and Friday until further notice.

For those who attended the Iowa City show, we would like to extend our gratitude for your understanding and cooperation. We take our fans and performances very seriously, and would never cancel a show unless it was absolutely necessary. Please know that we will be making every effort to return to your fine city.

Thank you so much to our fans for the kind sentiments and well-wishes on Jim's behalf. We hope for Jim's quick recovery and to be back out on the road soon.

With Love,
My Morning Jacket

All the best to Jim. Hope he is OK! Glad to hear that he was released from the hospital already.

Too bad two nights in Chitown unfortunately postponed (which I had tix to both nights), but you know they will make it up to the city in a special way soon. Everyone send your healing vibes Jim's way.

Let's wish Jim a full recovery. He's an amazing singer, and I hope those Chicago shows still have a big turnout even if they get rescheduled.

glad JJ is OK, but shit the band should have just jammed it out for a while... would have been a great opportunity for an experimental jazz oddyssey

I was there last night and damn they were on fire and just getting into there groove. No one these days rocks harder than Jim James these days - NOBODY. If this was gonng happen to anyone, itd be him

That said, I didnt think it looked that bad. I was about 15 feet back and didnt get a clear view of the extent of the fall, but some are saying he just kind of stimbled and got his leg caught between the stage and the speaker. He was able to jog off stage instantly, and hes already out of the hospital, so it cant be that bad

Im still holding out hope for Chicago because of this and they havent officially announced a postponement. If it is postponed, I should hope its in the next month bc Im moving back east mid november....crap

I hope JJ is ok. I must say, though, that I saw them for the first time in Detroit on Saturday and stayed for about 11 or 12 songs before leaving disappointed and confused. I guess I don't get all the hype. People were enjoying it so they must be doing something right.

I think JJ is just maybe a tad bit clumsy. I was standing front row at the Greek in LA, right in front of JJ. At one point the bear tipped over and Jim almost tripped on it like 4 times before the stagehand finally moved the bear altogether. It got to the point where inbetween songs I yelled up for him not to trip. Here's to a quick and speedy recovery!!! JJ and the Jacket are the BEST!!!

I'm still stoked on the Greek Theater show in Berkeley this tour. I can see how that could happen the way Jim rocks toward the ends of the stage and then it goes dark! Sucks for the Iowa ands Chicago fans, but I'm sure MMJ will make it up as they are a truly class act.

It is really hard to put on ANY type of performance on a tour. Things were not right for him that night, and he got hurt. This is terrible for him, and we should all give positive words towards him. He is going to be in bed for a few weeks, and may even read the articles about himself, to see how things look to the world around... So we should say nice things, or nothing at all. Get well soon.

man that really sucks, i hope jim gets better soon! i have tickets to see them in Amsterdam in three weeks and needless to say i will be majorly disappointed if they cancel! this is obviously a once in a lifetime opportunity. and i feel bad for the people at the chicago show too because they didn't really get to experience the magic! but obviously the main priority is recovery so feel better jim!!!

haha. thats really nothing big. James Hetfield was HIT in MN, by a swinging lighting assembly back when they did the Justice for All tour.

when the stage collapsed as planned so does part of the lighting assembly and it swings across the stage and he was supposed to be back far enough to avoid it, but was not :P

I think the Hetfield pyro thing was in Canada somewhere. If I'm not mistaken it was a co-bill with GNR.

its funny how everyone is afraid to say jamband, mtv describes mmj

"My Morning Jacket steadily widened their sound throughout the following decade, embracing everything from neo-psychedelia and Americana to funk, prog, and reggae."

no mention of the word jamband, its like a dirty word, becuase its so ill defined.

^ ha! treeofjazz, that's the funniest comment of seen on here in a while. Jim probably can fly, he just doesn't want to show off. and as for you, mr. seancarney, try falling off the roof of your house and landing awkwardly on your lawnmower. yeah, feels pretty good doesn't it?

i'm pretty sure the hetfield pyro thing was in canada as well. they cut the show short, then gnr came out and played for less than an hour. there was some pissed off metalheads.

that sucks for jim james, hope he's ok. why are there negative comments on here, its amazes me sometimes. it was just a freakin accident, things like that happen sometimes.

in all seriousness, i really hope jim is okay and recovers quickly. i was at the show and i really think asking for a refund is not obnoxious (to yell that at that moment, however, was). everyone knows college students r strapped for cash and then we pay 35 dollars on a tuesday night in the middle of midterms to go see our favorite band and we get sheisted. im aware that jim didnt fall on purpose but i think the band owes us more than just another show that were going to have to pay for.
