Everest Picked by Neil Young

It's not every day a young band gets invited to join a legend on stage, for what's shaping up to be a most anticipated tour. Los Angeles-based quintet Everest had that very experience when Neil Young asked them to support his national tour, joining Wilco and Death Cab for Cutie, East Coast and West Coast, respectively.

This collective of talented musicians is no stranger to touring, having just returned from a European jaunt with My Morning Jacket, in addition to each individual's resume, ranging from stints in The Watson Twins to Sebadoh. As the Los Angeles Times pointed out, the band members "sport resumes longer than the intro to 'Cortez The Killer.'"

Everest's debut album, Ghost Notes (Vapor Records), is sonically reminiscent of the classic vintage equipment used to capture it. Recorded at Elliott Smith's former studio, New Monkey Studio, one can't help wonder if the album title reflects more than just a name.

Their California sun-soaked pop songs mesh into rocking proggy jams or spacey ballads, propelled by the unmistakable Hammond, slide guitars and Russell Pollard's gentle vocals. The beautifully produced (Mike Terry) tracks emit a certain sense of vinyl-era aesthetic, yet balance with a modern-day vibe, drawing from their influences yet never veering from their own unique pedigree.

Check out the song Trees. It has me hooked. PI listened to it at least four times yesterday alone. Really haven't heard much more than that song so now I will go forward and get the album given the Neil stamp of approval.

I was pretty certain Wilco was playing New Years shows in Chitown, but maybe not since that would conflict with Umphrey's. That is puzzling to see them not in Chicago.

Would love to see Wilco and Neil on the same stage - but they won't be anywhere near Oregon. Fleet Foxes would have been a better choice over Death Cab or Everest IMHO - but it'll be good regardless.

I have been a long time fan of Neil from Nobody Know this is Nowhere to Prairie Wind. I enjoy his music almost everyday. I looked to pick up some tickets for the Philly show and was extremely disappointed to fine tickets were $250 a piece. WTF? Can someone make sense of this for me? This has soured his tunes music to my ears. Is it really al about the loot today?

i think vapor records is neil's record label, so that explains why everest is opening. also disappointed that wilco isn't playing in chicago. and about the ticket prices, yeah its disappointing that they're high but there are GA Floor tickets for $75, i think the $250 are the closest to the stage on the side, so thats kind of a ripoff. either way its going to be a good time.

Neil is worth the money. I wish I could see him again, but this tour is out of the question.

It's "EVERBODY KNOWS This is Nowhere". I can understand the high prices on his last tour, which was in beautiful theaters with 3,000 Max capacity, but paying this much for arena shows with other mediocre bands has disappointment written all over it.

This is rediculous. A Chicago date with no Wilco? What is the Allstage Arena?? It's the Allstate Arena and it's not even in Chicago, it's in Rosemont, which is a suburb. I agree with Grateful Ed that Fleet Foxes would be a much better choice than deathcab. Deathcab is boring and redundant and nobody can touch Fleet Foxes vocal harmonies.

Wilco just recently played Chicago and they are doing their 5 show run winter residency again next year there. An opening date would be a little overkill. Basically even though its Neil Young, I think Wilco headlines in Chicago. I don't think Wilco are playing NYE in Chicago but if they were I don't think they would give two Sh$#ts if Umphey's McGee were playing there on the same night. No offense.

i got my tickets for the fourth, wouldnt have paid 100 bucks a pop if Neil Young didnt have wilco opening, no disprect to neil cause i love him with all my heart ( my HEart of gold), but arena shows have no appeal to me. But fucking wilco and neil young in one night, god damn. Never really heard of everest but i second the notion that if neil thinks there alrite, then indeed theyre alrite by me.

Neil has often toured with younger bands that aren't exactly like him. I once saw him with Sonic Youth and Social Distortion. Also ga floor tickets are about 75 to 80 bucks which is somewhat reasonable these days. Looks like some people will whine about anything.
