Keller Williams w/ Moseley, Droll & Sipe: Live

By: Bill Clifford

If you're a regular JamBase visitor, then it's probable you're familiar with Keller Williams the musician, as opposed to the real estate company. For more than fifteen years Williams has toured the U.S. and internationally as a solo artist, with infrequent "side projects" spotted throughout. His most recent group effort found music's mad scientist working with his "dream band," three musicians and friends, each with connections to the improvisational music scene; bassist Keith Moseley (String Cheese Incident), guitarist Gibb Droll, a scintillating musician who's played with the Pat McGee Band and Kevn Kinney, among several others, and drummer Jeff (Apt Q-258) Sipe of the famed Aquarium Rescue Unit.

Live (released September 16 on Sci Fidelity Records) is a two-disc audio set with a bonus DVD culled from various performances throughout the winter 2007-2008 tour. Williams has never shied away from his influences and from the opening notes on "Same Ole,'" his admiration for the music of the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia, in particular, is apparent. The seventeen tracks span his career and include a song written by Moseley ("Look At Where We Are") and another by Droll ("Reinhardt Rag") written in tribute to jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Highlights of this set are the songs where the quartet stretches out into long, free form improv jams, such as on "Breathe" or the nearly 16-minute "You Are What You Eat." Williams' quirky sense of humor is unmistakable on "Temple Balls," his groovy ode to foreign marijuana laced snacks.

If you're not already a Williams fan, Live isn't the disc to introduce new fans. But for the purest and collector, it's a welcome addition to the evolving Williams cannon.

These discs are great. Ironically, I like them alot more than either performance I saw from this group. It's possible they got better from when I saw them, it was like their 4th and 7th shows together. I remember from the shows that Gib didn't take the time to build into his jams but he does here on the disc and the sound is quite welcomed. The Same Ole, Tribe, You are What you Eat, and Killer Waves are all outstanding. I highly recommend checking this set out.

Great Album, Gibb Droll rips it up live. Now im glad Keller did not join the String Cheese incident after Nershi left. I think one of Kellers only remaining dreams is to play with the remaining members of the Dead on a tour doing lead. i could see that happening..

THE WMD's rip it up! Saw them at NW String Summit and they brought it. I think the addition of the band brings alot out in Keller and I like it better this way... adds a little kick!

Jeff Sipe is the man! Anything he plays on will undoubtedly be the shit.

saw em a year and a half ago at sumemrcamp for the 1st time, they were ok, real dead sound, but a little uncooridinated, saw them again i believe at either rothbury, or 10k, but for the life of me cant remember which, either way it was a year later.....2nd time they were considerably tighter then before. So im really looking forward to future shows!

Bill, you should have proofread and spell-checked your piece.

Miles, I wouldnt say its the best thing Keller ever did. I've seen this band twice--once in NYC and the other at All Good, and while I absolutley loved it, I dont think I like it better than seeing Keller up on that stage by himself, looping everything together and just giving us some straight KW. Having said that, you can be damn sure I get this album!

That was never a possibility. Keller has said this many times.

I think Keller should join Phish and kick that junky Trey to the gutter where he belongs.
