SANDMAN ENTERS, LEGEND SECURED

This week in 1991 Metallica's self-titled album, a matte black slab with a crudely drawn snake and band logo ghostly superimposed on the cover, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard pop charts. Three years on from …And Justice For All, which crowned them the reigning kings of metal, Metallica brought the California speed masters into living rooms worldwide, retooling their gristle-in-the-teeth, hell-on-greased-rails style into something capable of holding its own on MTV. Controversial amongst fans who wanted their "Metal Up Your Ass" band to remain a cult property, Metallica is a painstakingly crafted, nigh ridiculously focused affair, trimming the sludge-prog tendencies of earlier efforts and establishing an emotional intimacy and musical tautness rivaled by few of their peers.

Perhaps the biggest middle finger raised on Metallica is to their fans that insisted the band not change, evolve or become remotely more accessible. It's hardly a happy-clappy record, but there's a palpable increase in melodic character and the ballsy production from oft-maligned Bob Rock (Motley Crue, The Cult) is clean but crushing, ever present even as it snakes around your speakers. If one can stand the emotional maelstrom, it's a super killer bong hit 'n' headphones album, one of those journeys that feels far longer than the hour you just spent, eyes closed and body eerily still, in your beanbag chair. Kicking off with a classic rock tune on par with "Dream On" or "Locomotive Breath," the album winds through some downright gorgeous acoustic passages and shamelessly bombastic sections, too, Metallica might not be Master of Puppets but it may be the more influential album in the greater scheme. Like another major release the same year, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik, it showed the courage of a well established band to follow their convictions, even if they led them away from certain parts of their past and existing fanbase. Hindsight has proven the decision a smart one for Metallica but at the time they made it, firmly entrenched as the heaviest major band on Earth, it took some courage, and the work itself holds up nicely, unlike most albums from the early '90s. Credit due all around.

Track listing:

1. Enter Sandman
2. Sad But True
3. Holier Than Thou
4. The Unforgiven
5. Wherever I May Roam
6. Don't Tread on Me
7. Through the Never
8. Nothing Else Matters
9. Of Wolf and Man
10. The God That Failed
11. My Friend of Misery
12. The Struggle Within

We're off to Never Never Land with this 1991 performance of "Enter Sandman" at the ginormous Monsters of Rock concert in Moscow.

Here's "The Unforgiven" at this year's Bonnaroo Festival.

James Hetfield discusses "The God That Failed," including footage from the original recordings sessions .

We wrap this week's remembrance of great albums of the past with "Through The Never" pummeled nicely in San Diego in 1992.

Metallica's long awaited new album, Death Magnetic, releases worldwide on September 12th. To hear the first officially released cut, "The Day That Never Comes," pop over here. The real meat is in the second half, which is some of the finest, heaviest instrumental work these dudes have done in more than a decade.

this album was the last straw for me. metallica changed my life when i first heard them. i'm such a huge fan it took me about three years to admit this album this album wasn't that good.

i hope they can redeem themselves with this new one.

"...it showed the courage of a well established band to follow their convictions, even if they led them away from certain parts of their past and existing fanbase..."

SELL-OUTS! And I loved Metallica, hence my user name. They peaked on the Justice tour.

and now in 2008 they're doing their best to relive the past because they lost it with this album. Bob Rock please...worst producer ever. Kill'em All, Ride The Lightening, and Master of Puppets....the end.

This cd sucked. People say this album was either their last good album and their first bad one. I think the latter, everything beforehand ruled.

that concert in Moscow looked insane. don't really have crowds like that anymore. i loved metallica in high school. i think lars' fight against napster really turned me off to them. still going to go back and listen to "lightning" right now though. thanks Jambase for keeping it diverse. we should all try to listen to more than just "jambands". bring all live music to the table please. we can decide what we want to read.

Legend Secured?

It was secured a long time ago. I grew up with this band in the clubs this was by far the worst and low point of the band. They used to make fun of this sort of thing, and the became victims of it. It took courage to do what? Sellout, when you already have millions? What a slpa to their true fans faces. This was a low point and members were playing at their worst. No, it takes courage to stick to your guns and ride out into the sunset. That is why they are trying to reclaim some of their past glory.

It must have been this writers first Metallica album.

lol, you guys are hilarious. listen to yourselves, you are calling these people - these human beings - "fags" and "assholes". its called jambase, not jamband. so what if they step outside of your precious little scene from time to time to mention a band that influenced a lot of us growing up. i'm not really a metallica fan, but jesus man, open your minds a little bit, or just do what any rational person would do and just avoid reading articles that have the word metallica in the title.

Why not ask Jake and Brendan from Umphrey's McGee what they think of Metallica and this album in particular and see if they don't praise them all to heaven? It's strange how tightly some folks hold onto their personal conception of what JamBase "should" be. It's organic and growing, and metal is part of it. And if you see the name Metallica in a header why not just skip it and use your precious time on this earth for something more fulfilling to you? I'm just saying...

Ignorance reigns supreme here on Jambase. Seriously. If you don't like the band shut the eff up. Calling people "fags"? How old are we? Go do your homework, and be in bed by 9 children.

It's funny how many hippies are formal metal heads...

I heard Kill em All in middle school & it changed how I lived my life & thought about music altogether. The only reason alot of "fans" dont like this album & And Justice is because everyone else got in on the secret. They just werent as cool/underground anymore. The writing on this album is great. This was the last good ablum.

Is this a review of the new album or a reprinted review from ten years ago. I'm confused.

Master of Puppets is an infinitely better album. I just like the music better. I still like the band, but the black album never got my attention aside from enter sandman
