Brooklyn's McCarren Park Pool To Close

Sonic Youth
Brooklyn's McCarren Park Pool will host its final concert with Sonic Youth on August 30. The Pool will close its doors after three years of rock shows, dance and theater productions, and movies. Currently able to accommodate 6,000 fans, the Pool was originally a community swimming pool built in 1936 and closed in 1984. It was reopened in 2006 as a concert venue by Live Nation.

The New York Sun is reporting that the pool will open again in 2011 after $50 million of renovation make it worthy of around 1,500 swimmers.

while it's true the Pool is going to close for now, it's only closing for renovations. When it reopens, the city parks department hopes to have the beyond-olympic size swimming pool filled with water once again (as it was in the 70's, before it had it's ultimate decline..), as well as a cafe and an ice skating rink. They DO intend to continue to hold concerts there, so I'm not sure why this is much of a big deal. But JAMBASE - you are technically correct in your posting.

On a side note, (and before some people start backfiring at this statement..) yes, there have been a couple of solid bands that have played this venue since it's opening 3 years ago (I can count them on one hand), but generally the venue only caters to hipster garbage, so..uh..oh well!

Seriously? Not a big deal....Unless you have been living under a rock for the last 3 years the Pool has been one of the funnest places to see an outdoor show in NYC. And to say that they have only hosted a handful of great acts, not only implies you have no clue what you are talking about, but that your taste of music is lacking..

And yes, its Brooklyn, so their will always be a plethora of hipsters. I personally, would rather snicker at them all day, then be hit in the waist constantly but fucked up hippies with a hula hoop.

Look at Jambase's slogan. Its "Go See Live Music", not "Go only see Jambands"

Sonic Youth IS a big deal.

I live in Southern California, so I do not know about the pool... But I agree with going to see live music. This sounds like good news altogether.

Pretty cool place to see a show. Brooklyn is always a haven of wonderful music. Watching Bisco from inside of a pool and on top of a diving board was a pretty cool experience. In regards to why "garbage hipsters" occupied the stage most the time was because the area in Brooklyn where the venue was. The majority populous of that area were young and budding hipsters with really tight pants.

That sucks, this was a great venue, and the pool parties were a blast, although to be honest, most of the music/crowd was disgusting hipster trash.

I wonder why after it had been closed for 32 years, they decided to re-open it though, I remember there were a lot of complaints when they started having shows there about noise and stuff. I hope something new and equally cool and exciting opens up soon though, cause this city's been losing too many great music venues/clubs.

the hipsters would not show up for the town meetings so they lost the place, i dont really care cause it was way to partial to indie rock. if they just got away from their 8 bit nintendo's and myspace page they could have attended these crucial community meetings that decided the fate.

cool venue, even though i got kicked out of the last show i was at there.

if they improved the sound system, and brought in more mainstream acts, it would have been a lot better.

A hipster is someone who listens to "indie" music and wears tight-fitting womens' jeans. They typically have smelly, greasy, and unkept looking hair. Many of them now sport beards or have ironic mustaches. Irony seems to be thier ethos. They often shop at thrift stores like AmVets or The Good Will to find their ironic clothing. The more ironic the better. Nowadays they also like to sport cheap plastic neon green or hot pink sunglasses. Look at any American Apparel advertisement and you will see hipsters. However, much like hippies do not like being called "hippies," hipsters do not like being called hipsters. And they are usually very snobby and will not so much as give you the time of day unless you are wearing womens' jeans and are dressed somewhat ironically. You can usually find hipsters at any bar that has specials on Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer.

Explain how irony has anything to do with the way a hipster dresses. Do you know what ironic means? Just asking.

So relix mag dubs Jerry Garcia as the original "hipster". Does this mean that relix is trash or Jerry was a smelly piece of garbage that dresses like no one else dresses. I just need this cleared up so I can decide how i want to grace the world with my presence like tomorrow. :)

just as "hippies" are FAR distant relatives of the hippies of yore, the "hipsters" merely coin their name from a culture that sprouted mid-20th century, but actually have very little to do with the originators. current "hippies" and "hipsters" actually have a lot in common. they both disdain authority, working in general, often are supported by parents or relatives, and like to do a lot of drugs. their only real differences are music preference. if two of such members found themselves in the same room. they'd probably hit it off very well as long as they don't bring up their choice of music. this is just what i've seen from living in bed-stuy for 6 years, 4 of which were at ART SCHOOL. yeah yeah i know. so call me an hipster/hippy expert.

hippies are nicer then hipsters, the out of control wooks give them all a bad name. not to mention they like more complicated jazzier music, instead of this crappy power rock where the bass line plays the same chords as the guitar, can someone explain the point of having a bass if it plays the exact same chords as the guitar?

Alex...about the bassline thing...it gives it more balls. And I do agree with PCPrabbit. Hipsters and hippies are rather similar. Dress & Music are the main differences. Hipsters seem to like a band because they feel ownership in some strange way if they started liking the band early on. They tend to abandon bands/fashions once they go mainstream. Here's a link to a hilarious website. Enjoy!
