LeRoi Moore: 1961-2008

Wow. RIP Roi. What a beast.

Hadn't seen DMB in a while (saw them way too much in high school), so this summer we figured why not, and went to the Nissan show. That ended up being LeRoi's last show he would play with the band. I will be happy for the rest of my life knowing that I decided to go to that show. That band has opened up a lot of people on this site to good/great music. Thanks for the memories.

This is a sad day for music and the jam community. I've seen DMB about 15 times, mostly from 98'-01', but still listen to their music today. Leroi Moore had a big impact on me personally as a musician, and I'm a drummer.

I will miss Leroi huge in the DMB sound. He was always my fave along with Carter. RIP

Always the coolest cat on stage hiding behind those dark shades. He will be missed.

Say what you will about DMB but LeRoi was an all around amazing saxaphonist. He brought lots of energy and tore it up on the sax. He will be missed!

This was written by one of the DMB stage crew after last night's show that hit me pretty hard:

As we sat this afternoon contemplating the loss of our brother, we wondered how we could possibly do a show today. Dave put it into perspective stating, "There's no place I'd rather be than here with you guys right now." We cherish special memories of our lost friend. Tonight, Dave told a story about LeRoi at a bar in Virginia where the cash register was near the stage and LeRoi leaned on the register because "standing had become a chore". Roi proceeded to play the most beautiful version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Dave said, "that was the day I fell in love with him. And I'm still in love with him." It's safe to say we all were in love with him. "It's always easier to leave, than to be left." -DM

A truly sad day for DMB fans. LeRoi...thanks for all that you did for this band and music in general. You and the shades will be greatly missed. Just didn't think we would see this happen so soon...RIP Mr. Moore

i found out last nite :( been to quite a few dmb shows and i know that it will never be the same...leroi was a master of his instrument and a class act guy RIP ROI

Saw DMB twice this summer with Coffin. Coffin is a great sub for LeRoi but can never be a full time replacement. I do not think Dave Matthews Band will ever be the same without LeRoi. RIP to a great musician and a great person, you will be missed...

LeRoi Moore an amazing musician who we are lucky to have had during our time here on the big marble. Thanks to LeRoi Moore and the entire DMB for the music over the years! Keeping LeRoi's family, friends, and also the DMB in my thoughts at this time.

I've never been a huge Dave fan (his voice just annoys me)but always respected the musicianship, especially the sax and violin. Another great one gone.

So very sad. Leroi was an incredible musician who made my life just a little bit better; just a little bit brighter. Going to my first DMB show in at least four years on Sunday, 9/7. I'll see you there Leroi -- in some way or another.

Man, what sad and shocking news. I was under the impression he was recovering from the accident and getting better. I read in an article that Dave said Leroi actually wrote alot of the musical content of their songs, especially the older stuff (which in my opinion was much better than their music these days). Leroi, your presence and skills for blowing that horm will be greatly missed.

This morning I woke to a text message from brother who had introduced me to DMB when I was a young teen. I nearly lost it. I was extremely tired from watching the Olympics all night and tried to fall back asleep hoping that when I awoke again it would all have been a bad dream. I am still trying to get a grip on the fact that the greatest sax player alive is no longer alive. I have been playing sax since I was 12 and LeRoi has been my favorite since I was about 16. I just completely love his style and sound. He was the first artist I would try to emulate from our generation and now I can truly say I was extremely blessed to have experienced his stage presence multiple times over the years. DMB was the first large concert I attended. I was 15 and just absolutely blown away by his sound. He could change between styles and genres like no other. I have since become a drummer and usually only play the sax on the beach for a release from time to time( I just returned from a session, and am still in my wet board shorts with sand on my feet). It truly has been a sad day for me and I cannot help but tear up at the responses on here. Thank you all for not bashing this thread; even if you don't like DMB, you have to respect the musicianship, but if you can't respect that either, I really appreciate you keeping your comments to yourself. LeRoi Moore was a phenomenal artist and I am torn up by this loss. I only hope that someway the family will understand the impact of his existence. My heart goes out to the family and and the friends that knew him best. I love you LeRoi and I will never forget what you left behind. Rest In Peace brother. ^^Amen to that drumStark. LeRoi was the reason I got into DMB. He definitely gave them their sound IMO. LeRoi was an incredibly talented musicians and possibly one of the most underrated musicians on the scene. DMB will not be the same without him, and no one will ever be able to fill LeRoi's shoes. This is a terrible and tragic loss. My heart goes out to all his friends and familiy and to all of us fans. May LeRoi R.I.P. you will always be rememberd for the fantastic tunes you graces our ears with. Thank you brother

RIP LeRoi. I'm glad Dave continued to play a show. I'm sure the band thought about it and they know LeRoi best so maybe that's what LeRoi would have wanted them to do. Coffin has been a doing an excellent job. Interesting to see what happens from here.

Its just sad to see him go at such a young age. i dont even know what to post. Thank you to all of you for being so greatful to this legend. I really hate it when people bash DMB because of the fans that go to the show, there truly a great band with some of the best musicians around. Dave playing was the only thing he could of done highvoltage, he's dying inside and playing music is all he knows now. But my guess is that he takes a really long break after this tour. Its just not going to be the same. RIP LeRoi heaven just got some more funk.

i'm still in shock over this news. i found out right before i went to bed tuesday night and it still hasn't sunk in. my first dmb show was 10 years ago and i luckily was able to score free tickets to the virginia show this year. afterwards i was thinking it wasn't really worth the drive from ohio to go to that show, but now, wow, i'm just glad i got to see leroi's last show. i would have been really bummed had i not seen any dmb shows this summer since i didn't see them at all last year. it just won't be the same without him there with his shades on :( i am not suprised at all that they went ahead and played the show that night. people grieve in different ways and if it helps the band to heal by playing music, then why not? rest in peace leroi, you will be missed.

^ im sorry hivoltage but it would only be right that they play. what better way to send him off than by honoring, creating, and sharing what made him and their bond so special. its like when ratdog played the day jerry left his body. bobby went out and said "if our departed friend proved anything to us, he proved that good music can make the sad times better". i'll never forget that quote. nothing truer can be said for any positive musical soul. the music will always keep them alive, so WE can't stop playing.....just think of the beautiful melodies he's making right now that every one of us will get to hear someday.......play in peace leroi and ALWAYS "let there be songs to fill the air"!!!!

I'm so glad to say that i caught him before the terrible accident. We were all truly blessed to have been able to listen and enjoy leroi's music. God bless. and as for dmb keep on truckin. Continue to create beautiful music for as long as you guys can. Its definitely what leroi would want.

Couple,three years ago I got all high and mighty and decided the kids at the show were ruining my show, and yadda yadda, I stopped doing the Gorge run. Now I'm bummed in a way I can't put my finger on. I knew I'd always head back to see the boys and now when I go right side ??????? DMB was the first band that wasn't a bunch of dead 70's bands that I went apeshit over. It just feel fucked up that he's gone.
