Robyn Rubinstein: 06/25/75 - 08/15/08
Robyn Rubinstein |
Smart. Witty. Happy. Loving. These are the words that come to mind when I think of Robyn Rubinstein. Robyn was a fantastic writer, one of the best on my team, and she might have been the funniest scribe I've worked with. Not only did she have a deep love and understanding of music but the girl could flat out write. Robyn made my job easier and my life better. I wasn't even one of her closest friends, but that didn't matter; anyone who knew Robyn was touched by her warmth - and that laugh! Man, that laugh was contagious. She was one of the good ones, and none of this is fair. When I found out Robyn had collapsed last week I just kept hearing Neil Young singing "After The Goldrush" - I was thinking about what a friend had said/ I was hoping it was a lie. But, like all the heaviest burdens we face, it was no lie, Robyn was gone.
Robyn "Rubi" Rubinstein was born on June 25, 1975 in New York City. She grew up with her older sisters Jill and Carrie and her parents Henry and Linda in Stamford, Connecticut. As a child Robyn was always reading and writing, and she even won a "young writers" prize, a precursor of things to come. After high school, Robyn went to Northwestern University, where she graduated in 1997. Already drawn to the power of music, it was in college where Robyn would solidify her lifelong passion for sound.
Robyn loved. She loved life, music, dancing, writing, people, The Simpsons, kickball, yoga, the outdoors and perhaps most of all, dogs. I've long believed that those who connect with animals are special, and Robyn was as special as they come in this regard. As much as music was her passion, so were dogs. Upon moving to San Francisco in 2000, Robyn became a dog walker and in 2005, when she moved into "The Big Blue House" with JoAnne, she opened up her very own dog walking business: Release The Hounds. In addition to leaving behind her family and extensive network of friends, Robyn's dog Thelonious Monkey will miss her as much as anyone.
If you didn't know Robyn because she took care of your pup, you probably knew her because of music. Maybe you went on Phish tour with her. Perhaps she turned you on to your new favorite band. Or maybe you just argued the merits of this artist or that one with her. Robyn knew music, and the San Francisco music community knew her. So it made sense that we gathered at San Francisco's historic Fillmore Auditorium last Sunday, August 17, to celebrate the life of Rubi. There aren't many people who could fill The Fillmore for a memorial service, but Robyn was special. The girl had friends and she was loved, deeply.
Many of us are still in shock. The cause of death is unknown and there appears to be no "reason" for this. As people we want to believe so badly that there are reasons, explanations, ways to keep us, and those we love, safe. That's not the way it works. Robyn did nothing wrong. She was 33-years-old and took better care of herself than most of the people I know. Life is fragile and this whole thing if fleeting. There are no answers, no reasons; just questions, memories and sadness. But as the darkness begins to lift, whenever that may be, there will be peace and happiness because Robyn left behind mountains of love. She brought people together and that can never die. No one knows how long we'll be here. All you can do is live and love and be, and Robyn did that as well as anyone. I already miss Robyn, but I will never forget her.
