As Lady Miss Kier once wisely pointed out, groove is in the heart, and the heart inside Plum Crazy is very groovy indeed. This Petaluma, California band finds the pocket in a variety of styles, giving each of the five tunes on this EP a really pleasant Newtonian pull – objects in motion that remain in happy motion throughout. Opening cuts "Rain" and "Little Sally Blues" suggest a modern day Tracy Nelson & Mother Earth but they take things into more simmering, sumptuous territory on "Welcome To This World." That's followed by the bar band gold of "Six Pack," the kind of sly groover the Sir Douglas Quintet or NRBQ might've once dropped. This brief introduction ends a well-played cover of Bob Marley's "Waiting In Vain." Josh Yenne (guitar/vocals), Skip Urmson (drums), Justin Hellman (bass) and Daniel Savio (keyboards) have a full, dovetailing sound that fills all the space in a really nifty way, and lead singer Shawna Miller may have the warmest, silkiest pipes to emerge on the scene since Jen Durkin popped up in Deep Banana Blackout a few years back, rolling from a sultry blues growl to I Threes smoothness. Lots to like here and many pointers to more to come.
